For this list, we'll be ranking some of the "not ready for primetime players" that did some great work during their tenure at “SNL”. It hurts me how underrated Bobby Moynihan is. He stands out even when he’s in the background and his delivery is always on point. His simple facial expressions do more than most snl cast members can do with full on scripts. Sounding off for Bobby !!!
Bobby Moynihan is funny in every skit he is in. Very few cast members can boast that.

I would've added Taram Killian to this list too, especially when he and Jay Pharaoh teamed up in skits.
Darrell Hammond is ridiculously underrated/underappreciated....the show would have been a shell of itself without his impressions in that era....SNL had gotten bad before he started carrying a good chunk of the show
I believe he is in the top-10 show appearances.
yea he didn't carry the show like Farrell, but he was in his own league.
@@jason4275 I actually would argue that he carried the show. Clinton, Gore, Regis, Trump, Sean Connery, and so many others.....those sketches dominated a major chunk of the show just about every week....Will Ferrell had been there since '95, and the Spartan Cheerleader sketches were an instant hit, but if you look at Will Ferrell's early years on the show, they kind of pale in comparison to 98-02 when he was REALLY on fire. But Darrell Hammond carried a ton of airtime in that same era. The other cast members were better because of him. Molly Shannon, Chris Kattan and Cheri O'Teri were really the only other cast members who could completely carry sketches/characters on their own.

How? He stared in several hit movies and was in tv shows and also had his own show. The guy isn't underrated.
I think he used to be huge, but he’s been so inactive this decade that people haven’t thought about him. It’s unfortunate because he’s really talented.

Cheri Oteri is not underrated. She is in my opinion, the best female cast member of all time. No question about it.
I met Jay Pharoah fresh off when he got fired from SNL. He was doing stand up at my college. He was hilarious and the nicest guy. He never should have been fired from SNL. He was the reason why the show was so good.
On what grounds was he fired ?

He's one of the only people who has successfully been a cast member on both SNL and MadTV, he deserves more credit
To me, he wasn't underrated considering I watched him on All That/The Amanda Show to MADTV to SNL. On top of being in Wild N' Out. He put himself out there and worked for his dues but it like saying Kenan is underrated.

I regularly look up old Cheri clips from SNL. She is my favorite. I love the sketches where she’s the Italian mom yelling on her front porch at the neighborhood kids.

Tim Meadows is one of the most underrated and underappreciated cast members. He put in a decade of service and they didn’t even give him a sendoff episode
Always felt like he was made second fiddle in a way. Which wasnt fair.

Jay pharoh is actually one of favorites of all time. He was so under appreciated I can’t believe they fired him

But it sounds like he wouldn’t fall in line for Lorne Michaels he was too opinionated for him. Fck snl I haven’t watched since he left the show
Abby Elliot was SOOOO underused.... She's literally sooo funny but SNL didn't really use her as much....

Ego Nwodim is extremely talented and under-utilized. I also loved Chris Elliot. His show, Get a Life, was brilliant, hilarious, and stupid all at the same time.
Nassim should have had her own spot and jay should have been higher. And I think we’re gonna need another list. Chris Parnell, Darrel Hammond, Abby, Tarran, etc.

He worked constantly after he left, he has biggest list of roles of the entire history of cast members.
But Morris got left out when Eddie Murphy did a reunion of SNL's black cast members when he last hosted the show. I thought that was sad. Morris had some memorable bits on SNL, like when he provided assistance to hearing-impaired viewers by yelling at them. Hilarious, though politically incorrect. Morris was sadly overshadowed by comedy legends like John Belushi, Bill Murray, Chevy Chase, Dan Aykroyd and Gilda Radner.
Underrated in recent seasons: Melissa Villaseñor
Definitely, she might get more roles if Kate McKinnon ever leaves....Kate definitely deserves all the praise and is amazing but there is always one big female cast member and one male that stick out. Now I think it's Kate and Beck.
Melissa is a very great one. I’ve liked her since she was on America’s Got Talent some years back.

Yes her and Heidi, never liked Kate i think she’s funny but her acting isn’t good enough and really overrated

Did anyone else love Will Forte in The Falconer sketches? I feel like I’m the only one who remembers or appreciates that sketch.
OH MY GOD thank you for reminding me of these sketches! I had to go look them up because compilations criminally neglect them. "The Falconer: Time Travel" i hadn't even seen before. It should be considered a classic though!

Cheri Oteri, Nasim Pedrad and Chris Kattan I agree. The rest I either don't know them or think they got the recognition they deserve.
(12:27) Horatio was hilarious. That skit wasn't the only thing where Fallon couldn't help but laugh when Horatio went into Chris Farley-mode at times, but when guest hosts Britney Spears and the late Brittany Murphy were there, they handled the skit like a charm.
Chris Kattan was so underrated. He was so good at physical comedy and very versatile.
Number 6 is my pick. Cheri Oteri always cracked me up.
One of my favorite SNL bits was the Back to the Future auditions, with a highlight being Pharoh's Eddie Murphy trying out for Marty McFly

Joe piscopo. No doubt Eddie Murphy saved the show. But piscopo was often his go to costar in sketches. He often gets forgotten because Eddie became a mega star.
I just wrote something very similar! Great minds! I loved Piscopo. He carried half the show then, and yet people forget him.
You guys are confusing overrated with forgotten.. because like you said he was one half of the cast so they definitely understood his value!!
I think that the late '80s-early '90s cast of SNL was the best one ever; they worked incredibly well as an ensemble and so many were truly versatile. Here's to two of them:
Jan Hooks is my all-time favorite SNL woman (with Phil Hartman as the best man over all). Why no one ever built a movie around her is a mystery to me. She could play young or old (a great Bette Davis), elite or trashy, demure or brassy. That clip shown here briefly with a young Alec Baldwin is from the sketch "Brenda the Waitress," one of the top 5 SNL sketches ever -- even the side characters in it (Nora Dunn, Kevin Nealon, and Phil Harman) do wonderful work. And no cue card reading either.
I also agree with the pick of Kevin Nealon. He was the best Weekend Update anchor ever in part because he not only made fun of what was going on in the news (like everyone), but parodied and mocked the way news was reported. From catch phrases like his sign-off, "I'm Kevin Nealon, and that's news to me," to jokes about news polls (Clinton 64%, Bush 57% and Perot 53% -- that poll has a margin of error of 122%), to the general authoritative pretentiousness of news anchors, he parodied the news in every way.
This is a solid list, but I'm quite surprised that Jane Curtin, Daryl Hammond, Tim Kazurinsky, and Garrett Morris aren't on it.
Who the hell underrates Tim Meadows or Chris Kattan? Those dudes are legends of SNL.
especially Kattan he was on the same level as will Farrell, when will was the breakout star.

What about top 10 underrated celebrity hosts on SNL? The hosts that most people thought would fail or wasn't gonna be funny but actually did a good job.

I don’t feel he was underrated he was quite recognized ! Had his own best of and was a film star and he is still remembered by SNL alumni’s to this day!

Bobby's wrestler promo with the Rock is one of the best SNL skits of all time.

That’d be impossible like 90 percent of the cast is underrated if anything it’d be easier to make a video about cast members that did get the credit they deserve. Key and peele, Ike Baronholtz, will sasso Alex borstein everyone else just kind of middled out

This is a good list. All of these performers are incredible talents. Takes good acting skill to do comedy well!
Definitely Will Forte. One of the all-time funniest SNL sketches was his inspirational coach dance in the locker room with Peyton Manning (Hader can't hold it in and the others are trying not to laugh). Also "I'm Tim Calhoun and I'm running for the office of President of America."
I'd have to say my 10 would be ...Horatio Sands.. Garrett Morris...Cherrie Oterrie...Will Forte.. Jason Sudakis...Norm MacDonald was my absolute favorite without a doubt.
Currently - heidi gardner is my favorite cast member! She is a fantastic character actor!
Soon as I saw this I said "Laraine Newman". Face it, when your co-stars were Aykroyd, Belushi, Chase, Radner...easy for her to be overlooked. Wherever she is now, I'm sure she thanks you.
Both she and Garret Morris were both underrated and eclipsed by such a mega talented cast.

Taran Killam also deserves a mention. He was funny as hell, has a lot of good impressions, and his characters were hilarious, especially 1860s newspaper critic Jebidiah Atkinson

Kevin Nealon was underrated because his cast mates shone and overtook the spotlight a bit more than he did

Bobby Moynaghan hits his beats consistently.. can bet a I get a laugh when he in the skit.. & its wit an organic quality you can tell he enjoys as a performer
Bobby M. was hilarious even in roles with like one sentence involved, like the NFL player intro skit or his reoccurring Juggalo parody Ass Dan.
I love that they acknowledged Bobby but still disappointed they didn't use clips of Ass Dan or that Italian-American mob reporter on Weekend Update
Horatio Sans doesn’t deserve to be on the list. He is most definitely one of the worst. His delivery was horrible; always giggling and clearly stoned.
Seriously, it is as if they are trying to delete Taran Killam from the SNL history, while, in fact, there was this time period that he used to occupy 2/3 of a show’s screen time. He was a very strong cast member, extremely talented. And not only was he dismissed suddenly, he is NOT mentioned as one of the underrated cast members? What did he do wrong really???

Terry Sweeney seems hilarious. I wish he had been on longer. He was on that brat pack year.
TOTALLY agree with Jay, Nasim, Bobby and of course Will Forte! I think one of the most underrated (ever, but also currently!) is Mellissa Villasenor! She is so funny, and talented, and such an accomplished impressionist, and yet I don't think they utilise her enough, or gets enough love/credit from other fans
A lot is gained from the ones that were "team players" and not concerned with getting all the shine they could for themselves. Often these were the most underappreciated ones.

Norm McDonald is often known as the best Weekend Update Reporter and has a huge fanbase so I wouldn't call him underrated
Jay Pharaoh does AWESOME impressions. Yet, sadly, his stand-up comedy is weak when he's not doing them. He needs to work on developing his own comedic persona.
(RIP) Jan Hooks!! Consistently funny and fresh, and great chemistry with the late Phil Hartmann.
Underestimated and/or Underappreciated Jane Curtain ("Thank you, Missus Lubner..), Maya Rudolph, most recently KALAMA MAMA!, Update's iconic archetype, the most spot-on Gerald Ford impersonator ever (second only to the once famous Rich Little),..the landshark himself, Mr. Chevy Chase (AKA The Most Hated Man in Hollywood).
One problem SNL has had at various times is leaning too heavily on one performer at the expense of focus on the rest of the cast. We've seen it with Eddie Murphy, Will Farrell and Kristen Wiig; all good performers, but their presence and onscreen charisma could overshadow other talented players.
It might have happened with Mike Myers, Dana Carvey and Phil Hartman if they had not been on the show at the same time.
I know at times snl became “The _____ show”.
I think it became that way with Kate McKinnon for a while too

Joe Piscopo. Definitely. When the entire second cast was wiped out, only he and Eddie Murphy remained. Everyone remembers Murphy carrying the show back then but they forget Piscopo carried the other half. I loved his Sinatra to Murphy’s Stevie Wonder singing Ebony and Ivory. Comedy gold.

This is an uneven Top 10 list. Some of those “underrated” were top stars of the show.
Given that he was in the introduction, I would have thought Tim Kazurinski would have made the list. Like most of the early 80's SNL cast, he got overshadowed by Eddie Murphy and Joe Piscapo, but he was always a pretty funny guy, and his Jack Badofsky character was a thing of beauty.

I remember someone telling my girlfriend at the time that she looked like Cheri Oteri. She said she had been told that before yet I was only familiar with later SNL so didn't know who she was. It's totally true though, so I now have a bit of a crush on Cheri haha
