Farley should be number one his performances made you laugh no matter what. He was so good at everything he did and unfortunately he was also taken from us too soon.

Okay, I'm sorry but Bill Hader deserves way, way more than some mention. In my opinion (and of course, it is only an humble opinion) , he should've been somewhere in the top five, at least. He was very versatile and most of his impersonations were just brilliant, among the rest of his qualities. I love Kristen Wiig, and she also brought a lot to SNL, but if she made the list then Bill Hader and also Fred Armisen should've made it :)

Teyeson Bee Steve Martin is marginally funny, at best. Chevy Chase was good in the vacation movies, that's it. Martin Short is so pointedly unfunny, lame and obnoxious that he should hope we never run into each other while I'm holding a sharp object.
Belushi should be higher on the list, and Hader should be top five. Kenan is definitely a legend at this point as well. Not to mention, Fey or Cicley Strong

Chris Farley and Will Ferrell were hands down just funny. But Phil Hartman was the best at playing anybody at anytime and owning it. People that did not watch the show then, really don't understand how great Hartman was.
Yeah, I do agree that he ws underrated and they should've used him more!! I saw and loved every skit he ever did!! He'd be in my Top 3!! On the last SNL show he did, Chris Farley wasn't the only one crying; I cried like a baby. I also loved his characters on "The Simpsons" very much!!
Yep, I would have liked to see Phil Hartman closer to the #1 spot, but I think they had it right with Will Ferrell there. It's so tragic how Phil's life was cut short, RIP.

@@DHudelson Hard to say, the original cast or that crew definitely were the strongest. They didn't use as many additional players then, everyone had to have the range to cover it all. The third great cast was the short run with Billy Crystal, Harry Shearer, Martin Short, Christopher Guest...

Although they were only on for one amazing season (together I might add), Billy Crystal, Martin Short and Christopher Guest were spectacular.

Steve Martin was not a cast member, but rather a frequent host.

But as the NY Times pointed out, and I think rightly, Chase had a huge impact on setting the SNL comedic style, especially for Weekend Update, that would become a bedrock staple of SNL humor for the next 40 years. Even when the sketches were weak, you could usually count on Weekend Update anchors and their "deadpan arrogance" for some laughs.
Name two lasting characters or even memorable skits that Bill Murray did. He really want much on the show. People give way too much extra credit to the original cast.
Tina Fey wasn't better than any of the ten listed on this list.
Belushi single handedly shaped what snl is today. He was the reason SnL put physical comedy masters on roles no one else could, belishi needs to be #1 even though I was born 20 years after his triumph.. I somehow still miss him 😂
Belushi is the most overrated SNL cast member. He was okay in the Cheeseburger skit and a few others but he was never THAT funny.
Of the original cast, Ackroyd and Radner were ten times funnier and more versatile. Carvey, Wiig, Hartman & Hooks are the most underrated SNL cast members.

One of the most underrated cast members in SNL is Taran Killam. He portrayed every character flawlessly and almost never breaking his character. Fred Armisen also deserves to be listed!

Given the runtime of this show and the sheer number of comedy icons it produced over those decades, this list was destined to fail no matter what!

Gilda was an absolutely amazing talent.

belushi was good, no doubt about it. Although, Farley, who has a similar comedic style, was better and more memorable.

Dan Akroyd, Bill Murray and Gilda Radner set the bar high. All were hilarious. The second group of cast members didn't have the chemistry the first group had and the show suffered. Although, Eddie Murphy was hilarious.
Eddie Murphy was the most talented one of the second class if he was older he would of made the first class of SNL.
No one today would make the top 20.
Dan Akroyd is my all time fave SNL cast member. Incredibly versatile. Also underrated: Cheri Oteri, Phil Hartman, Maya Rudolph, Tina Fey.
Kind of surprised that Tina Fey, Amy Poehler, or Jimmy Fallon didn't make it on the Honorable mentions area. But eh. To each their own.

I think Kate McKinnon deserves to rate high on that list! I remember when Kristin Whig left the show, I thought that it was going to be a very long time before another female cast member would fill her shoes. But Kristin is brilliant, playing more unique and also established (Hillary Clinton, Elizabeth Warren, Jeff Sessions (?)) than anyone else on that show. She is absolutely brilliant!

okay, I looked it up and Kate started in 2012. So then yes, I agree with you that she should be on the list. But this is a ridiculously difficult list to make. I would need to do a top 50 in order to feel like I've gotten all of my favorites.

When Will Ferrell first hit SNL , I didnt find him that funny either.. It took a while for me to warm up to him.
Farley is king. Funniest man that has ever graced this planet, he should definitely be #1 in my book. If you don't find him hilarious you don't have a funny bone in your body.

And Jan Hooks...I am an old timer and can't really comment on the last 10 years because I don't watch it anymore, but Belushi and Radner are way over rated. Boomers only love 'em because they remember the show of their youth fondly. If you actually go back and watch Belushi and Radner they were usually pretty lame. I would put Oteri and Murray ahead of them.
Charon58 agree on Belushi, probably his death is part of the reason why he's considered a comedy genius, but Gilda was very talented. The way she used to manage the comic timing or the way she used to sneak out of cracking moments where almost unique. I understand what you mean though. And also: so you don't even know who Bobby Moynihan is?

This is one of those questions impossible to answer because of so many funny cast members thru the yrs. I liked all the picks and I could add 10 more to the list. Love SNL!
Such a great show up until a few years ago when it became infected with TDS. Only tune in now for Kenan Thompson, who always makes me laugh. I just love him.

@@jamesanderson348 I think the males have been the weakest part of the cast since 2014. I feel like Vanessa Bayer, Cecily Strong, Kate McKinnon and Aidy Bryant carried the show for about 4 years. And Nasim Pedrad was solid as well. Kyle is good and so were Jay Pharoah and Taran Killam but I wouldn't miss Kenan, Beck Bennett, Mikey Day or Alex Moffet much at all. And the newest women are very strong too. Heidi Gardner and, especially, Chloe Fineman are killing it.

This is a good idea. Different generations have watched unique sets of cast members. Comparing people from so long of a time span whose presence didn't overlap can cause disagreements, especially since the first five years were so unified and hallowed in SNL history.
A list for each decade is a great idea. There still has to be an "All-Time" list, though.
C'mon you know theirs would be "off" to say the least.

Well, it's not the Worst List.
Fallon's biggest accomplishment was almost single-handedly increasing female viewership by 70% in his 6 year run.
Belushi is #10, take away 9...Hammond isn't in the Top 10??...and Jane & Tina don't even get an honorable mention?!?

The lack of women on this list is pathetic. Tina Fey is one of the best head writers in the show's history. Molly Shannon was incredible in her run, and Rachel Dratch had tons of amazing characters.

Kenan Thompson should definitely be on here. Not only is he hilarious, but I believe he is the longest running actor on Saturday Night Live in the whole history of the show. I also agree with "Mighty Andy" (from the comments section below) that Bill Hader shouldn't just be in the honorable mentions category. I personally think he should be in the top 3. I absolutely love his old man reporter character.

Dan Aykroyd is my favorite. He could portray Presidents Nixon and Carter to a tee. His delivery was flawless and he made me feel that he believed in his parts so much that I just had to also.

Yeah, Gilda being lower than Kristen Wiig is a bit of a travesty. Murray should have made the cut, dropping Wiig... Honestly, ALL the Not Ready For Prime Time Players should have been at least Honorable Mention... Curtain and Newman were at least as funny/talented as Wiig (not a dig on her, the NRFTP were all amazing) Morris was consistently underrated and underappreciated... And Chevy too...
Honestly they should have just disqualified the NRFTP and done a 10 best of the rest...would have been more fair.

Gabriel Lewis For me, he's a second. I go with Phil Hartman, who's given performance I love even when he's not supposed to be funny, like Colon Blow.
F2FRONT500 Phil Hartman could do anything. I love his Clinton impression. Personally, I like Eddie Murphy the best. He literally saved everything that SNL did at that time. However, Chris Farley wouldn't even be in my top 10, let alone number 2. Chris Farley wouldn't even be a thing if it wasn't for Belushi!

This list is similar to my own list. My biggest difference is that I rank Belushi one and Murray two. The rest fall in line, after those two, with this list.
Gilda was both hilarious and cute. No wonder Gene Wilder fell head over heels for her. Her passing was a heartbreak. And Hartman had to be here.

Fred was fantastic. Personally, I'm shocked that he wasn't at least an honorable mention. At least we have Portlandia, which has most certainly become an outstanding cult favorite itself. :) xo

Such a great compilation! Back when The comedians were actually creative and funny. And folks still understood satire.
We used to watch Monty Python at 10:00, followed by SNL at 10:30 as kids. The first two seasons we're epic.
Now, having seen the last few years, it seems they're back on track with writing and sheer talent.
