So there is an automata of a girl playing happily with her doll, a girl crying because the doll isn't working and one crying because her doll broke? I need them all

This is so fascinating! The first time I learned what automata were was when I watched the old 1953 film, "A Christmas Carol" with Alastair Sim. There were several in the shop window, little Tiny Tim looking on. The credits indicate they were on loan for the film. And now, nearly half a century later, I wonder where they are, if they still work, and if you've ever run across them yourself.

The “lady at the races” is definately at the races. They would bang their “brollies” up and down to gee to horses on. These are magical!

I can’t believe this was made all those years ago! Thanks for sharing! You can tell that the magician and sherpherdess were made by the same craftsperson.
Also, I absolutely love the way the lady in the video explains things!

They are so beautiful and amazing I can only imagine seeing something like that back in that time period for the first time. I'm so happy they are in such good working condition for people to still enjoy today. 😊

The lady at the races also is wearing a half veil, which is consistent with women undertaking (permitted) outdoor activities/country persuits. The veil prevents mud spatter if she´s anywhere near horses, as they gallop by.

I love these automata! It’s been my dream to own one someday, though I’ve never attended an auction. Eventually I’m sure I’ll be able to have one of my own :)

Were these automatons influenced by Japan's karakuri puppets, or vice-versa?

0:37 ... She appears to be a Jumeau and similar in appearance to my French Jumeau I have had for well over 50 years made from a death mask of a child who died at a very early age.

Are there duplicates of these automata or are they mostly one of a kind. The lady magician looks to be the same or similar from the video from the 1990's of The Museum of Automata in York that I guess closed in 1996 so wonder if that piece was from the museum? Also I have been interested in Automata if anyone here has seen the 1970's musical version of Scrooge Tiny Tim and his sister Kathy are looking in a store window and there are automata dolls. One is a lady doll looking in her mirror that Kathy wants for Christmas. I wonder if that is an original automata from the 1800's or was a reproduction?
