I visited NYC from the UK last summer and Katz’s was amazing. We don’t really eat pastrami in the UK, so this was the first time I’d tried it. Best sandwich I’ve ever had, and also a great hangover cure!

I would never go to this tourist trap. Screw them and all their rules. There are a thousand places to get a pastrami sandwich in NYC and I’ve seen multiple videos where people go around and rate a bunch of different places, including Katz’s, and they don’t always win. Like I said, there are plenty of other options that are just as good, if not better, not as hectic, no stupid rules. Frankly this place seems like Pat’s or Geno’s when it comes to cheesesteaks in Philly. Again, there are a thousand other places to get a cheesesteak in Philly that are much better, but those two are the tourist traps

@@iec7587 Well to be perfectly honest I should maybe edit my original post, or at least make an acknowledgment. When I made it I had never even been to NYC before. I finally went for the first time in June of 2022. While I was there I did actually end up going to Katz’s. 😀
Surprisingly there was hardly anybody there, so I just walked in. I still think their ticket system is odd and I don’t like it, but whatever…I guess it works for them.
I’ll admit their pastrami sandwich was very, very good and I agree it’s probably a “bucket list” place if you’re in NYC, but I also went to Sarge’s and I preferred Sarge’s. Plus Sarge’s is a lot smaller, less touristy and has more of a “local” feel to it. I just felt more comfortable there.

I can surely understand that...and it is intimidating on the first visit, for sure. I turned back and got directions from the guy issuing the tickets! But after that, I took my time and it went very smoothly.A street cop had told me: Get a pastrami and Swiss on rye with mustard, and a bowl of split pea soup. I've never forgotten that meal; it was as close to perfect as food can possibly be. I would call both of those items The Standard. There is Katz...and there is everybody else, a debate that will rage on forever of course.Truth: If I could have lunch at Katz, and dinner at Peter Luger the following night, I would fly in from Seattle for only those reasons. Right now. It's the best thing I could do for myself..!
