Great info! I love your channel! I got 11 chickens in March 2023. I clean up the coop every single day and also their run and yard. I use a dustpan on a handle with a small garden rake. Then I put it in the wheelbarrow and bring it up to the compost pile. I have two of them going now. One of them I'm no longer adding new material. We rotate pile with the tractor. Because the pile is fairly new I didn't want to use the compost in my garden so what I did was filled a 5 gallon bucket up a couple of inches on the bottom with fresh poo filled it with water and then watered the plants with that. It's manure tea. My garden absolutely exploded this year and I've never had such an amazing Garden. I really believe it was due to the manure tea. Happy gardening!!
As a fellow viewer, I’m really impressed with your dedication and how you’ve managed your composting process-your garden sounds amazing! 🌱 Have you noticed any particular plants that thrived the most with the manure tea?
Hello@@kiwigarden2024 ! Yes! The tomatoes, eggplants, peppers, spaghetti squash and butternut squash are especially overflowing. My Romas are usually 2 feet tall in past years. This year they are at least 4 feet tall. Im starting to can them later today! ( my stove top went bad, so new one arriving today). I'm looking forward to adding the compost to next year's garden. I live in an area where there is lots and lots of rocks and clay soil ( I live in the Catskills), so this will be a nice change for future gardening! Take care!

Great composting video..really enjoy seeing the two of you collaborating!! I am in the deep south, but I am already thinking about adding another composting bin to my yard. Compost is a treasure. One of my favorite things to do is harvesting the compost and showing my husband. He is just amazed when I show him what all of our garden refuse, scraps, etc. turns into. I learned about composting from a relative when I was growing up. One mishap some years ago, was there was a young black walnut tree hiding in my pine trees. My pines do not mind black walnut, but many things will not grow with black walnuts. That black walnut sent out roots (and over the 50 ft they claim) into my compost pile and ruined it. I shoveled it over the fence into the pasture to fill in a boggy area. It killed an apple tree that I planted near there before I knew that black walnut was hiding under my pines. We have cut that walnut tree down several times, it is still growing. Someone mentioned some kind of tree killer, but I do NOT want to kill my pines. I planted them as babies, and they are over 70 feet tall now... they were gifts from friends. It is hard up against the trunk of one of my pines. (if they ever come down, it will be big trouble in any direction) I got several food grade barrels for compost, and also started another pile in a different area of my garden. That other compost pile is full of cantelope and honeydew vines... My barrels have various melon vines also.

Enjoy seeing you in this coast to coast perspective. I have started composting 1 year now but i am in FL and yes we get rain but alot more heat then rain. This is the first time i have heard about keeping it moist. Mine has dried some tgrough this year at times but now with summer rains staying moist. I will water it going forward now. I really wanted to starting using some as i get beds ready for fall planting. Will it be okay to use even though it was somewhat dry at times? Thank both for all you do!!!!
Moisture helps as long as rains drain through it. Damp is good. A puddle of water is not but moisture is normal. I'm on my 3rd year composting here in Maryland. I compost mostly wood chips mixed with kitchen scraps/bad veggies in compost bin that's open bottom but I still don't have rich compost😥. The green matter has been broken down but the brown matter just won't decrease so it's basically soft and darker soft wood chips. I usually keep the lid on a least half of the month especially when animals/insects are in the compost. I partially mix the top part of the compost once every 3 months. Please tell me what I'm doing wrong? I'm grateful for any advice.
Can you use leaves. Wood chips take many years. QUESTION do either you know anything about putting sourdough starter in compost and garden. I rinse all my spoons cups and bowls when making sourdough goods in a seperate tub of water and then put that diluted starer water in my compost. Have you heard of this?
Well the idea is yeast helps with the breakdown but there is plenty of natural yeast and microbes in the bin. It really would do much extra. I've had problems with earwigs in my garden, destroying my plants, so much so that I had to use "Sevin" insecticide a few times. Now I notice that there's earwigs throughout my compost bin! I'm hesitant to use the compost and reintroduce these pests in my garden. How do I control, minimize, or eliminate the earwigs?!?
I am not sure. Sometimes you do have to use the stronger stuff.

Once compost is mature, how long does it last? Can it last for 6 months just leaving it alone? Or do you have to do something with it?
I can last years.

I like to use a paper bag from the grocery store to throw weeds into and then the whole thing goes into the compost bin.
Great idea

Question:. What type of leaves are best for leaf compost?
Well any work but the thin leaves are best. Like maple. Oak leaves are thick and take longer to breakdown.

What is the structure with the two chutes we see in the first half of the video ✊🏾
Not sure. I have a place for kayaks. And a place for drying garlic onions and potatoes.

@@THERUSTEDGARDEN thank you so much for this idea. I can certainly use leaves as I have lots of leaves coming from nearby oak trees.
