Read the tree workers manual, took a week long ojt , doing trims and takedowns, started my tree/stump business right away. 30 yrs later, still going strong. Don't mess around, just do it.
Very nice, going to be a few years before trying to go at it on my own, as I take on more sidework though, learning just how tough it is. Very much appreciate all the info, and the amount of time you put into making this video. Cheers
Thank you and thanks for watching. Between Running a business running a home and having a special needs baby, it was hard to put together this video but it was fun! Being your own boss has a lot of benefits but its also a lot of hassle. I just wanted to help out anyone who was thinking about taking that step by giving some tips. I enjoy watching your videos. Just make sure you take your time when working. Not being a critic at all just don't want to see ya get hurt. I learned so much from that Jerry Beranek dvd series. You should check it out if you haven't seen it. It helped me a lot!
Iv got a back yard over grown with brazelian pepper that are taller than the home.there is a concaved swimming pool in the dead center of removal way.can i use a chipper and use the mulching to fill in swimming pool
Working with trees is tough. The thought of starting a business is tougher. I'm gonna take the leap because of excellent videos like yours. Good job Joe!
Another thing read books or listen to audiobooks on multi-level sales techniques. Very valuable. Words can make the sale or lose the sale. When they are a go stop talking and leave. Then come back do the job and get paid. And don't be cheap on services provided. Always give a bit over the top. It pays down the road big time.
Spot on bud, my wife and I did a lot of the same when we started our service, some of them though we figured out the hard way, from under bidding to taking on too big a job to learning the benefit of subcontracting and being a subcontractor,I did get my first climb kit from Wesspur too, the kit discount plus being able to customize it and hands on customer service was hard to beat. Great video again
Wow bro really great video I just cut my first tree down today for a friend in a backyard in Brooklyn and I watched the TH-cam video last night and I had zero problems today and I even learned a few things I like how you went to everything in your video I have a DJ business and all of the things you spoke about apply to basically any entrepreneurial business and I thought it was very well done God bless you and I wish you a lifetime of success and safety
Love wesspur since I only live a few hours away from them, shipping is always quick. I also just started a company and this was great information, thank you.
Great video very informative, I’m a tree climber and I’m going to start my own company soon and this video was very helpful. Thank you, climb safe and GOD Bless.
Great vid joe lotta great points , I've had uniforms since day one for all my guys , sets u apart and proves you take your business seriously , u should do a vid on your equipment keep up the good work man
I would like to say, That was great. this is what 'we' the wount to be's need . people really wount to work not just for some one . but themselves. thank you for your time and consideration for others. God bless you.and your wife and your little trees. Thanks borther. we need more like you
Tip 1, invest heavily in equipment as decent employees are hard to find, especially skilled climbers. Lifts are gonna make them obsolete in a decade in most areas
Nice Vid. I really appreciate the candor, honest, and open view for upstarts. Not just telling everyone to jump into tons of debt for instance... Thanks again man!
Thanks Joe- Every part of this video is what I needed to hear. I'm working on the side (just the easy, no-cleanup jobs for folks I know) and until now-a handshake was my contract. I realize this is stupid, but the leap to insurance and contracts/LLC, etc just seems like a giant hurdle that's hard to overcome or justify while working another job. If you ever want to tackle a video like that which would explain the finer details of contracts, LLC process, insurance- there would probably be a lot of guys in your debt for the effort. Thanks a million and God Bless you and your family.
Hey thank you! Sorry for the late response. I have a sick baby so I have been busy with that situation. Im glad the video helped you! Thats exactly why I made it. If i have the chance i would try to do a video on all that. In the meantime if you have any questions ill do my best to help.
Hi Joe. I enjoyed your video, you covered a lot of great points for anyone starting any kind of service related business. My one complaint is that your background music level was a bit high and required replays to hear the important things you were saying. Just my two cents worth. Wishing you all the best in your business and hope your baby is well.
Nice video. Really like the swimming in the money and spam can! The sena communication makes working in the trees alot safer and better. I believe alot of people are worried about starting a business because they don't have everything figured out. After 8 years running a business I still haven't figured out everything. My goal everyday is to continue learning and improving. Jerry's dvds are good and also ISA has online courses that are great. A little expensive, but worth it. Just my 1 cents.
great video. Would be awesome if you could do a video on working/climbing on spokes as there are not any good ones. tips and tricks to steady yourself... Cheers
Thanks Joe, I just stumbled onto this video today. It’s been two years since posting. Anything you would add or take away from this video. Are you where you figured you’d be in two years? I really enjoy the channel. Thank you. 👍🏼🇨🇦
Neight Jay honestly not a lot to add. Yeah I’d say we have grown well. I haven’t advertised in years. We have been able to grow our equipment. So yeah I’m happy with how it has gone. Thanks for the comment and watching!
Joe Bisping right on. Glad things are going well for you. I’ll be watching this video a few times over. I’ve been wanting to start a small side business for a few years now. 👍🏼🇨🇦
My business is now all word of mouth and loyal customers. Take care of them and they will take care of you. I have a sign on my wall. I Only Have Great Customers. So when I see there not great I let them go and then just look at the client base and see I truly have great customers. Always treat them like gold because they are. If not then dump their lame asses.
Hey guys. I am starting a tree service in a situation similar to yours. I have chainsaw experience growing up and with the forest service. I have used a boom lift to prune trees before but not professionally. I want some real training before I begin. I would like to talk with you about my situation. Let me know if I can contact you in a more private setting for information. Thank you
well said sir! I have been thinking about starting up in VA. I am a cell tower climber so I know rigging and gear but trees are nothing like steel. What kind of truck did you start out with and size trailer? thanks for your time!
Thank you! Yeah its one thing to climb and another to know how to safely cut and rig. Well the very first truck was an old forestry bucket truck and by old i mean 1981 old lol I would no recommend that at all lol I picked up a chevy 3500 dump and built a wooden chip box on it and it has been great. Easy to get in and out of yards. I didn't have a trailer at first. We had a chuck n duck chipper.
Great Videos Joe, they’ve helped tremendously. What saddle are you using in this vid? I have a regular climbing harness and I’m debating what saddle i want to purchase
Buy your bosses old tree truck buy the rest new or in really good shape . Having 5 to 10 years experience helps . Within those years you'll know how much to charge unless your boss keeps you 100% in the dark
great video. just my two cents... music was a too loud. it was hard to concentrate on you with the music at almost equal volume. and it was so repetitive, witch is good we are here for you not the music. but it was hard to ignore. but great work and keep it up. be safe out there. -Chase a future property maintenance company owner. just got a petzl zigzag and awaiting arrival of my new buckingham master 5.0 harness. So exciteed!!!!!
I'm 17 years old I'm a hard working kid I had a presure washing business with my buddy made alot of money but I just baught a truck I pay 500 a month plus my insurice and gas and a phone bill. My buddy wjats to start a tree business but I dont think people will take a 17 amd a 18 year old serious what y'all yhink. I allso run a fire wood business
As long as you take yourself serious, other people will respect that! You will certainly have those people who will rase there nose to you but thats life! Get some training and know what you are doing and be professional and people will respect you! You have to earn your reputation and that can take years however it only takes a minute to ruin it so be smart with what you say and do! Go for it!
I’m 20, and I look a little young for my age, but so far I have been treated with respect and seriousness from every customer I’ve ever dealt with. I am very articulate, professional, and act older than I am. I can’t say the same from others in the industry, i have had to earn respect the hard way. But keep in mind at 17 it’ll be tough for various reasons, registering a business in some states isn’t legal til 18, renting equipment or getting crane crews is a no go til you’re 18, and obviously if you apply for a loan or driving a work vehicle is a no til you’re 18 as well. That’s in my state, so you’ll have to check your state laws. Good luck with it, it’s a very stressful and expensive start up, but it smoothes out and pretty soon it’s the greatest thing you could hope for
B Haekel I took a one week basic training course at ACRT. Outside of that completely self taught. I have never seen another climber in person or climbed with one lol. I did purchase the Jerry beranek training DVD series and it had the biggest influence on my skills. I highly recommend it!
Joe Bisping Thats awesome! Im an arborist right now and ive been thinking about starting a company so Im just trying to decide if I have enough experience or not. Thanks

You lost me at the insurance policy. Maybe when you actually have any kind of assets or money to take... But otherwise, you're forking over for something that you shouldn't be using to begin with, and if you do have to use it, it's no easier than forcing the client to take you to court. You're still going to shit on your own business if you break something. Point number one SHOULD have been, "Don't take jobs you can't handle"
Hi..... After a local wildfire I have lost ally gear and equipment.... Desperately need saw, climbing gear, chaps, helmet, felling axe, winch, blocks, pulley and much more.... There is not to many people in the tree industry that really go out of there way to help people so thank you

Mike Sokolow good advice

Nice video. Applies to many occupations across the small business spectrum in the outdoor crafts.

How much experience did you have before you started your own company?
B Haekel I had no tree experience however I did have ropes and rigging and climbing training in the rescue field for three years!
Joe Bisping Ok thanks!
Joe Bisping are you completely self taught or did you hire someone with experience to train you?
B Haekel I took a one week basic training course at ACRT. Outside of that completely self taught. I have never seen another climber in person or climbed with one lol. I did purchase the Jerry beranek training DVD series and it had the biggest influence on my skills. I highly recommend it!
