More is more! Designer Cynthia Ferguson takes us inside her 1930s bijou Toronto home saturated with color, pattern and artwork. She shares the dos and don'ts of maximalist design, so be sure to take notes. See how the designer created a statement entryway with bright red paint and playful Cole & Son pattern above the wainscotting. You'll be inspired to add wallpaper to your ceiling and use the color green in unexpected ways. The kitchen defies expectations with honed marble, blue-black cabinets and a gilt vent hood. Plus, learn how Cynthia made her petite bedroom feel grand and DIY-ed her bathroom walls!

I love seeing what interior designers do with their own space because it's often so colorful, eccentric, eclectic, and full of individualistic personality we don't see in these beige trendy spaces designed for clients. I can't say all of this is for me, but it goes together well and she's clearly passionate about what she loves and her own vision of her space.

@kyuu thank you for your reply! Maximalism, a lot of colour and pattern is certainly for the few, not the majority! Ironically I enjoy travelling to hotels that tend to me minimalist in design so I am able to experience another type of design I appreciate, but could not live in. We all can enjoy different design styles but ultimately select the one best for our own personalities.

She only mentions it briefly, but I think the trick really is to keep a cohesive palette through a smallish house. So much drama, but also very natural, repeated, balanced color choices. It's not a bright blue with a bright green... the blue is muted, though still bold enough to hold its own. It's not hot pink everywhere, but strategically placed. Absolutely beautiful example of how editing makes maximalism effective.

Yes exactly. When people who don’t yet have a good eye do color they don’t lighten or gray it down enough. You have to have all the colors in that paint mix. All her colors are rich but toned down. She knows how to mix. I would have painted the bathroom gray against white, same stunning pattern but tied into the marble herringbone tile more.

Finally, a designer whose idea of color is not a couple of spotches of color on a white room! I have a career where I live in other people's houses that I can't paint, so when I bought my own home, I committed to painting my rooms. I live in color. I love color. I play with patterns and texture against the color. No one ever enters my home and says "this is too much color" I love what this designer has done with color. I love the patterns, the wall paper, the ceiling paint. It's stunning and warm and livable. Even the black bedroom is beautiful. She's done an awesome job making her home unique and expressive with color. I love the green family room. I love that she's mixed patterns on the upholstery and curtains and I love the green lampshades. I have two rooms in my house in bright greens. I find green to be a color I can live with for a long time without tiring of the color. My living room is lavender with a deep purple accent wall, layered with shades of purple furniture and pillows and art work which I have balanced with antiques and modern shapes.

That is until I hired an interior decorator well known in my community. Gary walked into my foyer , living room and dining room and said to me “you do not need me”. I felt so validated. Ten years ago we downsized to a smaller, but not small house. I made mistakes about what I wished I had brought with me, namely some heavy draperies, that I could have reworked and a favorite overstuffed swivel rocker. After ten years and 8 major surgeries to save my life an auto immune disease, I am ready to finish unpacking and make this wonderful house my home. Your use of color, fabrics is an inspiration to me. If I'm being entirely honest, this home speaks to my soul right from the entryway monkeys on the wallpaper, down to the quirky painted bathroom and green entertainment room. Colour brings a home to life and even though it can be like a shock to the system in a sea of white, beige and bland minimalist modern homes, I think this is what I want in my home. I have somehow forgotten how much I used to love playing with colour. Growing up in high school, we moved a lot because my step-dad was a land developer and each room I had, my mom allowed me to decorate. I used to pick big, bold floral wallpaper patterns and bold paint colours to accent; then I would have a featured wall with wallpaper and paint the other walls above the chair moulding or wainscoting. It's so sad how much I had forgotten my love of colour.

How wonderful. So I am not crazy for loving color and mixed patterns. I admire the neatness of contemporary and neutrals, but I cannot live that way. I have tried but color always sneaks in. I cannot get away from the expansive feeling that bold color brings to rooms. I am now inspired to go for it in decorating my new apartment.
Her home is by far the most interesting, beautiful and unexpected one I have seen on all of You Tube. It says happiness and we could all use that right about now. I love how she says we didn't grow up learning to paint in neutrals. Life was full of color fifty odd years ago, cars, homes, etc. were unique. The color Pickle, reminds me of a favorite dress I had as a kid. My favorite shade of green.
I am going to go and paint my boring white and battered side table a deep red, without fear, and order curtains in a bright color. Inspired.

The Master Bedroom to me, is the BEST decorated room! While I love colors, some of the rooms can overwhelm people; I enjoy a calm, but colorful space.

I’ve saved this video to refer back to. Totally inspired by the space and the designer! The space is creative, functional for real life, and so many adoptable ideas. The designer is absolutely charming! I’d love to invite her over for dinner. Congratulations to H&H for breaking out of their white/gray/black/wood formula that they otherwise have been pushing down people’s throats. You’re maturing as a channel!

Great to see a home that's not following this ridiculous grey/white/black trend that everyone's into right now. Most fear color for the same reason they're afraid to feel. Color generates imagination, emotion, and life. The masses want to "fit in" so they choose neutral, lukewarm, middle of the road colors because it doesn't require them to make a firm decision or to be committed. Great job balancing those powerful colors!

I think I’m going to cry 😢 tears of absolute joy! No matter the struggle to scale back, color and pattern mixing gives me so much joy. Done properly, it will compare to having a well loved and seasoned wardrobe of items so fitted to your personality that new pieces fit in seemlessly. This is so cozy and yet enticing and vibrant. All I see is life happening here! 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽❤️💙🧡💙💚

As a fellow interior designer who is also a maximalist, i loooooved everything u did here. irrelevant that some things r not for me, the fact that they r for u and your family is the whole point. the dining room ceiling is EPIC! the wallpaper in bathroom is mind blowing! your bedroom lamps r gorgeous and your personality shines everywhere. u r the first designer ive seen on any show that i would love to become friends with. best episode so far

I really enjoy seeing how different people decorate their homes and I love some of the colors that she has used, and the space is quite cheerful. Honestly, though, this is a little much for me to actually live in. I like my spaces to be more serene and peaceful and I wouldn't want to clean all this stuff which would take me away from time with those I love and from my passions, but obviously it works for the owner/designer and her family, and that's what is important is to have personal spaces that work for us as individuals. I did like the idea of the simple dining chair slipcovers and may incorporate that idea as a simple way to change things up for holidays and different seasons.

This house is amazing! It may be too much for some people to live with (including me), but it is bold, elegant and fun. Yeah, who wants to be near the sights and sounds of a kitchen, not to mention the smells. I love defined rooms with a specific purpose. Unless a house is so big that it has a separate "wing" for an open kitchen/dining area, open concept usually doesn't work. I think it is something real estate people thought up to make a place look spacious.

Holy Moly this was so good!!! I will be watching this over and over and over again. I live in a 1902 beautiful Victorian and am always working on keeping it 'relevant' but respect it's history and as I have pushed the envelope a bit it has transformed to a wonderful home that no longer looks outdated but rather a celebration of it's beauty. It took my husband a bit of time to agree but as he has seen the transformation he is completely on board. This designer is brilliant.

Colour helps us grow into vibrant humans. Most of my friends tell me they’re frightened to use colours, but as you say it might only take a pot of paint to get one going. Thank you for sharing. Xx

I covered my settee and a accent chair, 13 years ago in a Warwick fabric, I believe it was called "Olive" it is crazy, in green red and black in a diamond and zig zag pattern.
