  • Learn how to care for Calathea warscewiczii and keep this stunning, but temperamental houseplant happy.
    Also commonly known as Calathea Jungle Velvet, and now officially Goeppertia warszewiczii. This is the most beautiful Calathea I know, but it is every bit as temperamental as it is beautiful. This video discusses all aspects of care, as well as discussing most of the common problems and how to fix them.
    You can also read my article covering Calathea warscewiczii care at smartgardenguide.com/how-to-c... for more information.
    Thanks for watching.

    This is the most informative video for this plant. I've essentially gone by all of the recommendations here and my plant has thrived. Seriously, humidity is key, and don't touch the roots when repotting! I did mess with the roots when I repotted in August of 2023, and it took until about April of 2024 for the plant to finally stop looking like it was ill. I call it my drama plant, but in reality she's been really easy bc this plant never misses a moment to tell me something's wrong. She is plant zero for mites. They love the delicate velvet leaves so much. Mine is treated with a pesticide I put in the soil, and if I see mites i apply weekly neem oil spray downs for 8 weeks.

    I have mine next to a north facing window...filtered light. Give it distilled water when the leaves slightly wilt and the top layer is slightly humid. I water thoroughly and let it drain completely and use a diluted synthetic fertilizer every other watering or once a month. The soil is a mixture of peat, succulent soil and perlite. I aerate with a chopstick. And I take into the bathroom every morning when I shower. I have humidifiers but in other rooms and since I have been doing this I have not had any dry edges on the leaves. It is a lot of work but it loves it and it is thriving. I’m consistently getting new growth.

    I don't know if it still matters but i'm going to share my experience with this Calathea. I've been into this very type of Calathea for over decade, have killed quite a few. I used to keep it in regular soil mix and used my fish tank water to water the plant. Sooner or later all of those passed, until the last one, which i kept struggling with.. But then, for some reason i had to leave the country for 4 months, My son was in charge of the plants and fish. To my surprise when i got back my Calathea looked amazing. Healthy leaves, not a single leaf was lost and the plant grew a couple more. I asked my son what he did. He said i was just following my scedule and filled the saucer with water two times a week. And here i was (mama is back) top watering it a again. Nearly immediately i got a couple of so familiar broun spots with yellow edges. Good that i made the connection and started bottom watering it again, and some short time later i put the plant on a wick. Since then, it's been about 3 or 4 years, My calathea grew and bloomed, produced healthy baby calatheas after the flowers were gone, i propagated it with those baby plants and by division. And even though the growths that bloomed and produced baby plants died off afterwards (after i cut the babies off) I still have that same Calathea and now keep growing one of her babies. So i have the mother and the baby plants.
    Also, i figure the water is crucial for this type of plants.. and i think if my water was "soft" enough top watering wouldn't do any harm. But so far it's just a hypothesis :)

    I've had mine for about a year, I bought it without actually knowing what to do with it. I recently repotted mine and its flowering! I have a white flower blossoming from it. It's so exciting. I find the foliage on mine doesn't sit high like the one in this video, (I've just bought a humidity monitor as I think I'm doing everything else right) especially as it's beginning to flower. Thanks for this video, simple and informative

    .. I just bought one like 2 weeks ago.. It really took mee by surprise and I realized that it was very different from all my other plants and Calatheas.. Thanks to you, I can see that I've done everything right.. So far 🤗 it was delivered in a plastic pot, wet as in soaking wet, so I haven't watered it yet but keeps checking the soil every other day as the days are warm (25 - 30 degrees.. It's called summer).. Most all my Calatheas are in terracotta pots, and they are so much happier pushing new growth like crazy.. My soil is coco coir, perlite, worm casting and orchid chunks.. I feed them with seaweed and fish emultion, mist them all once or twice a day, depending of the heat.. Except from my velvet beauty.. I think that I will take it to the the bathroom with mee when I shower, that way it can have some humidity at least once a day, so thanks for the suggestion ☺️ when the brise outside is gentle, I take them all out in the garden on my garden table, in shade from a huge parasol, and leave them there for few hours until the sun turns.. Then I take then back in and they seem to love it.. Once every 2 week I mist all leaves and stems with seaweed in the water (I do that in the garden) and they seem happy.. I boil my tap water, cools it off and run it through a paper coffee filter as my water here are really hard.. After that I can use it for misting and watering with no worries.. My velvet beauty is placed in a corner between a South facing window and the garden door to the west.. It seems happy there, all by itself with no one touching it and no draft, and it is pushing out new growth too ☺️

    For me the warscewiczii is one of the easiest calatheas I grow. It's about 1m from a large east-facing window, humidity is about 55-65% at all times thanks to a humidifier close by, and I bottom-water it with demineralised/distilled water only. It's been happy and growing strong for a few years without any pest issues (unlike other calatheas I've had!). Seaweed-based liquid fertiliser at 1/4 strength throughout the growing season.
    I'll have to divide it for the first time come spring because it's gotten quite large! I'm not looking forward to that, I must admit 😣

      can you please provide tips on bottom watering the warscewiczii? I've tried doing it before, I just don't know how long to leave it in for / how much water to give

    • @Dwynfal
      @Dwynfal 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@miranda_films my warscewiczii is in a plastic nursery pot. To water it, I put it in a saucer where I can put about 2cm (1") of water and leave there for a few hours. I keep on adding water to the saucer until it doesn't soak it up anymore. It may take 3-4 hours before that happens, after which I just put it back in its cover pot. As long as it's not drowning in water for days, it (and my other calatheas), do just fine. My cover pots are a bit oversized and I put a few rocks in the bottom, so any excess water just drains out. I hope that helps you figure it out for your warscewiczii!

    • @Dwynfal
      @Dwynfal 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@miranda_films don't worry too much and don't baby it, it will be just fine! Calatheas (and alocasias) are pest magnets so I make sure mine don't touch any other plants and I look them over carefully about once a week, so I can treat quickly if they get something! Be very light on the fertiliser (preferably organic) during the growing season and you'll enjoy its beauty for a long time to come. 😊

    My leaf tips ALWAYS come out crispy before the leaf unferels, I have had my warscewiczii plant for over 3 years idk what to do. I rarely ever get perfect leaves. I think the only time the leaves came out decent consistently was when I tried using a peroxide solution for a few waterings because I saw fungus knats, but I don’t want to use peroxide all the time, changing the soil did not help with the tips, however I saw another comment where you said use coco mix and I think that may help to keep the soil from being too wet too long, but it doesn’t like to be dry for a day either like other calatheas lol it is so dramatic, the leaves will curl and fall to the side like it’s dead then pop back up again like nothing happened after watering. However the soil tends to get dry on the outside and stay wet in the middle, the plant gets wilted out, but if I don’t let the soil dry out all the way it is prone to root rot and I use the peroxide solution and it gets better-it’s like a catch 22. I have changed the soil a couple times, but it is so frustrating I rarely get it to look full and naturally healthy like yours. This is the hardest plant for me besides maiden hair ferns

      I used to have the same problem, humidity was the answer in my case, daily I have 50-60%, but whenever a new leaf is unraveling i keep my humidifier all day round to keep it aroud 65-70%. Another plausible reeason - leftover water from misting or showering is demaging new leaves.
