      In college, everyone used use a coil heater you put inside a bucket of water, to get hot water for bathing.
      And people constantly found them no longer working and threw them out.
      My parents wouldn't give me money to buy a heater.
      So I would father all the broken ones, and open them up.
      90% of the time, one of the wires would be cut because of all the random twisting.
      I would take it out and reattach it. And I would have a free working heater.
      I had free hot water for entire college life....

    Would there be a way to fix the design fault while you were at it? I thought of hot glue, but it seems that's not a good idea for power transistors as they would melt the glue when they get hot. Epoxy maybe?

    • @mckenziekeith7434
      @mckenziekeith7434 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      There are a variety of materials used for this purpose. Probably they should have used electronics grade silicone at the factory. Just a small dab to dampen out vibration and support the transistor a bit. At home I would not use silicone because most hardware store silicone is very corrosive. So you might have to just use hot glue. Epoxy will make it impossible to repair in the future. Hot glue probably won't melt at heatsink temperatures. And it can be removed with rubbing alcohol. The terms used in industry are "silastic" and in China they often just call it "white glue" when it is translated into English.

    • @djordjeblaga7815
      @djordjeblaga7815 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Some manufacturers actually cover their PCBs with silicone or epoxy resin and I can tell ya it makes for a fun repair ;)
      Its far easier to replace or resolder the component every 10 or 20 years than to fiddle about with any kind of snot. But its for this (amongst others) reason that tool manufacturers pot their electronics. And also because it makes them basically impossible to fix.
      They even make Heatsinks that get soldered to the PCB for extra stability, but I guess they really cheaped out on this one.

    • @aserta

    • @fuzzy1dk

    If that transistor with it's heatsink is flapping around in the breeze with no support then no wonder it failed. Sure it looks like there's some tabs or whatever in the handle near where the heatsink goes but I don't think that's a snug fit i.e. there's nothing to stop the vibrations from oscillating that heatsink back and forth. If you want to make it last a bit longer (assuming you even want to open it again..) add something to support that heatsink. Strategically placed hot snot might do the trick and relatively easy to remove if need be.

      @@P004ME2LicensePlate After a small bit of research, it would appear the act of putting a full stop (yes I'm from the UK) at the end of a sentence which has finished with an ellipsis, is in fact a matter of debate. Who knew? Though I suspect it might be due to the differing evolution of our mother tongues (assuming you are across the pond).
      You're right, it would have been less effort to just go back and change the mistake, which is something I usually do once I've noticed it, however if I had done so, then we would not have had this delightful encounter and never found out about the linguistic debate to be had about a series of dots. Which in my humble opinion would appear to be the pinnacle of all internet encounters.
      I for one cherish our little encounter and wouldn't delete it for the world!
      Hope your weekend is going well, regards.

    • @P004ME2LicensePlate
      @P004ME2LicensePlate 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Well, @@welshman100 , here's the thing: You guys may have invented English... but here "across the pond," we --perfected-- _improved_ it!
      Haha, just kidding! :-D
      OK, about the full stop right after an ellipsis: I can understand why it might be up for debate. After all, the rule for full stops right where there's a dot at the end of an abbreviation is to combine them. So some of you might ask, "Why do something different for full stops and ellipses?" Right?
      Actually, had you gone back and edited your main post after my suggestion of it, then yes, we still would have had this encounter and the research; the "record book" just wouldn't show it, though. Erasing evidence doesn't erase the action. But if one of your concerns is that it's "important" to keep the evidence of our discussion in this case, then I guess that may be somewhat understandable for some reason, although I don't think this kind of thing is the "pinnacle of all internet encounters," haha. Thanks for cherishing it. :-) You're one of the nice guys who don't get all butt-hurt over something that's silly to get butt-hurt over, so thanks!
      Another thing I suggest -- and of course, you can take it or leave it -- is that if you're going to insert a line-space between paragraphs like this (which is good for reading ease), then just one per break is sufficient. More than one just stretches things out unnecessarily.
      Yeah, my weekend that week was nice enough, if I remember right. I hope yours was too.

    Matthias that is a horrable way to solder to the middle leg of a transistor , this transistor is in a to220 package witxh means the metal tab is connected to the middle lead i suggest you to silder the wire ro that one because soldering to what is left of the middle lead is just bad and it causes short cirquits trust me that was the reason my soldering statuon failed twice, because of my botched fix

    That's a good way to clean out the pinholes with the help of a wire, at 1:26. I've had trouble with replacing circuitry before, your way will probably be easier. I've also tried using some solder wick, but it doesn't get in the pinhole as good as I needed it to.

      There is an inexpensive tool that does an OK job of it called a solder sucker. Teflon nozzle with spring loaded plunger. You heat up the solder on one side of the hole with the iron, and suck it out the other side with the solder sucker. Just google it. Or look on amazon or ali-baba.

    • @1pcfred
      @1pcfred 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@mckenziekeith7434 when I did board rework we'd heat the pad and slap the board on the edge of the workbench. All the molten solder would fly out of the hole leaving it nice and clear. You have to do it really fast though. It's called heat it and beat it.

      @1pcfred 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@mckenziekeith7434 It makes sense if you think about it. Lead is heavy stuff so it really likes to fly when it is liquid. If the hole doesn't clear fill it with fresh solder and hit it again. Which is counterintuitive but often adding more solder is the answer in rework. Especially when it comes to removing solder. Heat it and beat it is the opposite of keeping stuff still when you're soldering it. Move it fast to desolder it.

    • @mckenziekeith7434
      @mckenziekeith7434 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@1pcfred yeah, same applies to solder sucker. If the hole doesn't clear completely on the first try, it is best to load it up with solder again before trying again. Also maybe add a touch of flux.

      Maybe they saw a cheaper triac with a "heatsink" was cheaper than a better one. Thats not a heatsink, thats just a piece of metal, not even aliminium, the disipation in that thing is minimal compared to having nothing at all. Most probably you could run it without it or maybe they added it because they saw it was too near the limit and would burn too often when starting already hot.
