    For an executive knife I’ve been praising the Boker Spillo since I was gifted one. It’s very slim and a pretty minimalist of an executive knife but it has a look that is different. It may be too nimble for some people but it’s a wonderfully slim carry. Especially in the summer with shorts.

  • @emersonb5764

    Forthe question about the OTF, it should be pointed out that on the extremely rare case where you were to load up the button to the point of launching the blade, it’s not going to stab 3 inches into your leg. The blade will pop off track at the lightest touch and worst case you might get a tiny 1/4” booboo.

    I keep thinking that I have “enough” knives but I keep buying more of them. I purchased a nice storage chest for my growing collection and proceeded to fill it up. Obviously at that point I needed another chest. I am in the process of filling up the second chest. I’m not sure what “too many” is but I’m guessing it’s when I cannot find room to store more knives. I have a good sized house so I’m in no danger of reaching that limit any time soon.

    • @LonestarTaoboy
      @LonestarTaoboy 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I believe it is too many if you have knives you do not use. Solution rotate every day (allowing for alternates when the situation dictates).

    • @danielcox5849
      @danielcox5849 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@LonestarTaoboy I have a few knives that I purchased when I started my collection that I rarely use mainly because they just aren’t very good knives or my tastes have evolved. A couple of my higher end knives don’t get used much because I display them. Other than those exceptions I rotate the rest of the collection depending upon my mood and what I’m doing at the time. I enjoy the variety. No two knives in my collection are the same.

  • @willblake72

    I've had that Mini Slim Pickens for a while. Great user knife. It's tricky to swing open because of a detent keeping it closed. Shabazz showed how to remove that in a video a while back. I found that once it's broken in the blade swings out pretty easily anyway, so I didn't do the detent delete.

  • @happykt
    @happykt 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    As for a classy fixed blade around $100, I'd chose the Buck Vanguard, the Fox BlackFox BF-749 Explorator Fixed Blade Knife, or the CIVIVI Knives C2104A Elementum Fixed Blade Knife (I own the Civivi Fixed blade and its VERY CLASSY and elegant.) FYI, I served in the US Army.
    Up until two years ago, I owned 3 knives (fixed and folding). Since watching David's video's, I now own over 150 fixed and folding knives (just under $7,000 in knives) and I'm reaching my end point because I'm just spending too much money on knives!!!

  • @mikemckenzy
    @mikemckenzy 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    The reason you can’t swing open and closed the Alliance Designs Mini Slim Pickens, is because the Mini version uses a second internal detent to prevent accidental deployment and less safe guillotine closure. It can be removed with a T8 driver inside. Reminds me of the second detent in the Spyderco Smock. Cheers, DCA!

    Hey DCA, definitely appreciate all the guidance and counsel you offer here. Now it’s my turn to ask a question. Can you help me find the right knife? Looking for a light-duty working knife (everything from cutting cardboard to patches of turf). 3” to 3 1/4” long, around 3/4” tall and 1/8” thick. Drop point blade preferred, but wharncliffe or reverse tanto is ok. Tight tolerances, don’t want dirt/sand gumming up the works every time I use it. Don’t want black. Would like a high end blade material, but D2 isn’t a deal breaker. Thanks.

    I like the number, 15. I try to keep my collection to only 15 in total: 9 EDC folders, 3 victorinox swiss army (as companion blades to my EDC), and 3 fixed-blades. Not only am I going for quality over quantity, I am also making sure that the ones I have will fall squarely to this two categories: 1. Sentimental Value, 2. I must actually rotate every one of them on EDC. If something in my collection does not find itself in my pocket anymore for whatever reason and they don’t really have sentimental value, I give them away as presents to friends or family… and then I buy something else to replace them.

    Large-handled small-bladed folder?
    I have larger than average hands, and really like a full handle, but there are times when I want or need a smaller blade, ~2.5” (e.g. for precision work, or to avoid concerns in crowded public areas, or where limited by law such as Boston). The other pocket will *just* fit my Gerber Prybrid, but it's a very tight squeeze and not practical. I was hoping my Olight Splint would fit in that pocket, but no way. Is there an executive style letter opener knife that has titanium handles, S35VN steel, is about as long as a Prybrid, but not as wide. Needs to be about as thin as the Prybrid as well. Very deep carry pocket clip will help it look like a pen. Thanks!

    Hey DCA and crew, I got the Artisan Cutlery Archaeo detent flipper (and it is a beauty), but when I tried to EDC it, I felt like the, non-removable, pocket clip wasn't great, I've had it jump out my pocket when taking other things out of the same pocket and hit the floor and open up.

    My wife got me a lovely 3-drawer knife chest with subdivided sections.. I initially said I'd not have more knifes than spaces. Then I doubled the knives up into each space. Now they're sorta overflowing onto the shelf. And of course the fixed blades are EVERYWHERE..
    I wish I had a good way of getting rid of some of these that I use less. It makes me sad that they're not being appreciated.

    Takes more than one to have a well rounded collection . You HAVE to have a knife for every situation or use . Bushcraft , Survival , Camping , Hunting, Fishing , Self Defense , Combat , and most importantly EDC . That adds up to about eight for a functional collection . Let’s be honest though there really is no such thing as TOO many knives . That reminds me I need to look for a Bali just cuz .

      I'm up to 185 knives but yet to get a Bali. I'd definitely start with an unsharpened trainer though. Otherwise, there will be blood.

      And lets be real, you can't have just 1 of every type of knife. You need at least 2 in case one fails. Make that 3 so your spouse can use one too, and still have a spare. Or perhaps 4 so your buddy can borrow one when you go camping...

    Hey DCA! With fathers day coming up, I am looking at getting my dad a knife. He's never been a bag fan of knives but in trying to convince him. He loves to golf, so I was wondering if there is a knife or even multi tool that might golf-related he would enjoy. Thanks, and love the videos!

    Hey DCA. I always was more of a fix blade person, but now I kinda become interested in some folding action. But I have some prejudice against locking mechanisms with springs because I'm very outgoing and don't want to end up with knife that won't lock somewhere out in the wilds. I'm not sure how justified my concerns are. Are those locks reliable? Would love to hear your opinion on this

    DCA I’m working on Building out a sock carry EDC. What would suggest these two items, A small, thin, rust resistant folding knife that would be comfortable next to the skin, clipped to the inside of the sock, next is a flashlight with similar requirements, thanks.

    Seth did a video on quickest deployment a while back but he was already holding the knife. What is the quickest deployment starting from the pocket or sheath to having the blade out and ready to use? I think Le Duck or something similar from a sheath and I don't know what would come out of the pocket the fastest.

    Are "super steel" knives really worth it? I have had knives in CPM 20CV, CPMS30V ect. But some of my favorite knives have been D2 or 14C28N. What are your thoughts?

    @Robert and Liz Carmichael for the 4th question idk if you are looking for these kind of knife but i would recommend Civivi Lumi in G10, for more budget, or We Eidolon in G10 or Carbon fiber. in my opinion they look great for office and i personally i take Lumi to office

    Hey DCA what steels would you most recommend for a Bushcraft knife? What ones would you most recommend avoiding?
    That Lionsteel was in M390, would that or M4 work well?

    • @martinhafner2201
      @martinhafner2201 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I suspect M390 can't take the impact work and could chip or crack if batoned.
      If you watch the Dutch Bushcraft Knives channel on YT, they've found the sweet spot is right around 3V, K490, CruWear and Z-Wear or the less fancy M4, M3, M2 and A2. Those are non-stainless tool steels with good toughness.
      It's tricky to get a hard use stainless that is very stainless and still tough enough. M390 is way too far up the hardness and stainless chart to be reliable. Even VG-10 can be too brittle due to the cobalt keeping the hardness higher.
      Keeping the chromium down around 14% and the carbon around 1% and some good vanadium and molybdenum for carbides is usually the way to go, favoring more moly since it helps with stain resistance.
      AUS8 is okay for a low cost, low tech approach but a little soft, while AUS10 or the Chinese 9cr14 would be an improvement and Sandvik 14C28N is a very good budget compromise. Plain 154CM is a good choice slightly above the budget steels.
      A powder metal version of 154CM such as CPM154, CTS-BD4P or RWL-34, is probably the best middle ground of toughness/hardness.
      CPM S35VN is pushing the carbon a little bit high and risking a little brittleness but may be good if kept down to about 60 hrc, so then it is really whether you trust the maker to use a reasonable heat treat for hard use knives.
      And really, that is the big question in bushcraft and other hard use knives - do you trust the knife maker to apply a good practical heat treat and not over-harden?
      If you never baton or only do very light batoning of small pieces with no forcing through knots, then it is a lot easier.
      In that case, you can go for rather hard steels although I would still avoid M390 and friends since they could chip some on the heavy side loads during notching work and light chopping. Maybe S35VN at typical hardness up to S45VN and S30V.
      Without the hard use, VG-10 and VGMAX are reasonable choices in the mid-price range.
      Fallkniven likes their cobalt enhanced alloys that are slightly harder than VG-10 : CoS up to SG2/SGPS.
      Even D2 or better yet, one of the powder versions of D2 (CPM-D2, PSF27, K110) could work out fairly well.
      S35VN is probably the sweet spot for non-batoning stainless steels.

    I have had a cheap kitchen knife for almost 10 years. 2 mm of the ede is gone. It feels like I am anable to sharpen it properly anymore and slices have to be forced a bit. Is it time to buy a new one that will last another ten years? Do cheaper blades have a finite life? Keep ut the good work.

    Like many other folks I work from home and lately I'm in the habit of picking a knife out of my collection for the day to fidget with. I picked up a ZT0022 recently and guess what, yeah I accidentally nicked myself while practicing opening it (very minor nick but annoying). I saw your FAQ video after that where you specifically mention the ZT0022 with copper scales and said "be careful" when opening... My question to you guys: how often to you come close to minor mishaps like that and is it more likely to occur on opening or closing? Does anyone else besides Spyderco make a folder with a compression lock? I wish they would migrate that lock to more models.

    Hi David, I’m looking for very thin knife options to add to my pocket organizer. So far, the Victorinox 1 Alox, Excelsior and Electrician look like good options, however the “height” is not listed. Can you suggest other knives with a height of around 1/4-3/8”? Thanks for all you do! I love the show!

      The Sandrin TCK is very thin, partially because of the very thin tungsten carbide blade. A little expensive.

    Hey David, I hope the move is going well. Ethan Becker! Could you explain the incredible qualities of each of his different knives he designs, and what models would you pick as the perfect set. I have the BK7, BK18, the BK40 folder, and the BK13. Is there something I’m missing? This could easily be a dedicated video as opposed to a FAQ vid. Thanks.
