This is very helpful. I usually base my titles off of the main character's goal or objective/motifs within the story. But I do struggle from time to time trying to find something that fits the theme of the story. These tips will come in handy

a title that i think is awesome is Hyouka it's a word game used in one of the episode (hyouka = ice cream -> i scream) kind of revealing the depresion a character had it's not much, but for me it was a mind blow

I have a manga in production (I'm 15 btw) it's called emperor's dice, it's about 4 people who want to make a kingdom of their own of Wich those with the power of the gods can also live with those with no god like powers because in the other 12 kingdoms they are all bordered off to keep those with powers disconnected from those who don't have powers(by powers I'm referring to these items called God sect's Wich have the power of certain gods imbued with them such as swords,shields,armor,rings,ect.)
How to decide the main character's goal please! Edit: (3 years later lol) thanks to everyone who replied. I've long since figured out what kind of story I wanted to tell and in turn, my character's goal. I'm only seeing most of the replies today but they definitely would've helped me if I was still struggling with this. Don't be afraid to get creative. A plot can be just about anything. There are no rules so don't worry about doing something wrong because that's impossible. Just think of something and build upon that idea over time.

In his background Ichiro comes from a privileged lifestyle in Japan, going to prestigious schools, being a star pupil in his classroom AND having a ton of friends, Ichiro's never known how rough life can be, especially if you're a foreigner like he is. Upon his arrival in America Ichiro mets with his aunt Noriko at the airport. While driving, Ichiro sees she lives in the dilapidated apartment complex, graffiti stained walls cover the buildings, homeless men riddle the streets and crime looks rampant in the area. Ichiro soon realizes he lived a high life cramming for exams, studying for what exactly!? To live in poverty with his aunt, fighting every waking moment of the day just to make sure he's not killed the next? Attending a public school where he's the only Asian male in a class of Black, Hispanic and Caucasian children, where he's the 1% ratio amidst adversity. Ichiro encounters what it means to be afraid as the mean, older and stronger students put him in check. Five of the strongest male students, all belonging to a youth gang called the Gold Cross Crew have beef with the Scarlet Devils gang, another set of teenagers who terrorize their teacher's and neighborhood. Ichiro is a target for bullying as he contemplates dropping out of school, transferring to a new one and restarting with a fresh start. Luckily, Ichiro only stays because of his obsessive crush on a teenage girl named Claudette Ross. Her boyfriend Kelly P. is the leader of Gold Cross Crew, in order to get closer to her Ichiro joins the gang, leaving behind his good pal Mason Woods. In the gang however Ichiro realizes it's a brotherhood of sorts, he became so focused on the brotherhood that his grades dropped, and his aunt lashes out at him, telling him to leave the gang! Intensity between both gangs reaches a climax as Ichiro is caught in the middle. Kelly P. and Claudette break up, Ichiro comforts her and Kelly P. beings to become an enemy to Ichiro. As the story progresses, We meet Ichiro's mother, a woman who abandoned her son when he was just a child for a wealthy businessman named Scott Logan. She wants to reconnect with her son after ten years apart. However she soon becomes the antagonistic mother that returns in her sons life to only cause havoc. **Disclaimer* There is much more to the story, eventually Ichiro & his mother reconcile but that's implied... they never actually do in the story though 😶

Apple Black/Black Apple ---I had created some creatures called the "Energy Monsters of Evex Caramni"for the original iteration of my world building back in my middle school years in the 70's -when I recreated the world for my reimagine of one of my comics, I had done a Google search Energy Monsters --and came up with the logo for "Monster Energy Drink" with the creepy green bolts. An epiphany was to turn those bolts into the creatures non-corporeal form.
I'm not really sure why the name was localized like that either... Aside from the localization of the name, though, it actually does make sense. The Japanese title "遊戯王" is actually a two-word title if you translate it literally. "遊戯" (Yuugi), meaning "Game," and "王"(Ou), meaning "King." So it's pretty much "King of Games." Taking into account that Yu-Gi-Oh was not originally focused specifically on a card game, this name makes perfect sense. (And yes, Yuugi's name literally means "Game," it's the same kanji and everything :'D) (and yes, I responded to an old comment... I'll stop now... lol)

Though I have to say that my favorite title ever is DRRR!! because the author decided it last minute when submitting the story to his editor, he just kind of was like "uhm, like durarara" and his editor was like "Okay. Do you want to add like an exclamation Mark like with 'Baccano!'?" And the author goes "let's add like two".
I already have a title in my head and Im just building the story around it. I was inspired by JoJo's Bizarre Adventure since its a name that describes one small feature of the story people expect "If its called JoJo.. Jojo must be in the story" while keeping everything else about the story secret.
Take this with a huge grain of salt because I'm by no means an expert, but giving a good reason for the grief and being careful not to make the characters reactions to over the top is probably the most important thing. There is nothing worse for drama than the audience thinking "gee, what an oversensitive little bitch, just because someone decided to steal your lunch once doesn't mean you have to lock yourself in the bathroom and slit your wrists". Other than that, I guess give it time? The reader will probably need a while to get attached to your character, if you just have some random guy and let bad stuff happen to him the audience won't care too much because he's a fictional character and they know very little about them. Normally you need a few moments to take in grave news and quite a few sad stories I've heard about didn't begin with/where not based on a single event but a series of bad things happening that either go worse or didn't really let up or even just one major event after which things just seem to stay bad for the main character. We also tend to have a bit of a tendency to focus on the negative if we just had something bad happen to us, what might only be out boss firing us will turn into yet another bad event that just had to happen. If you accidentally get cut by glass you may also attribute it to everything going wrong whilst not really noticing the things that do go your way. Also, maybe don't go too far into the other direction, melodrama is bad but so is just piling heaps of violence, death and general mayhem on your protagonist (depending on the setting you can do it a little but too much doesn't tend to work out).

The problem is that not only the title was practical but a one piece game also have that same title not to mention that it has a bit of the same blueprints of one piece in terms of the premise. I think it's also not a very memorable name. It's generic. Think of some other more memorable words for grand. For instance, if I were replacing that title I'd do something like Monument Venture because it has the combination of two -ent sounds. Rhyming and alliteration are always good for making a title catchy

I named my project Chaos Legion. It serves no relation to the Capcom video game. It centers around a Soldier who constantly battle against the God of Chaos who aims to open a portal that leads to the world that holds the legion of chaos. but now that I think about it, I might just name it Cacklet because it's the name of the sword that main protagonist uses and only his bloodline has access to wielding the Cacklet swords. There are plenty of swords in the story that holds the name Cacklet, for example the main protagonist held a sword named Pure Cacklet in the beginning of the project and in the fourth installment he obtained The Omega Cacklet while his brother wields THE Dawn Cacklet which originally wielded by his their father who died 8 installments later
I'm working on a manga and when I tried to come up with a name, I tried to come up with something short, sweet and to the point, even tried doing wordplay only to find that there are names for other things like companies and groups, so I just decided to go with a title that basically sums up most of the manga, and to a degree kinda breaks the fourth wall, which is what one of my characters in my manga does. And part of my title does have that "of" thing that you mentioned, but I added to the title, which is the fourth wall breaking part by making it sound like the main character is greeting the reader from where he came from (which is a planet that I made up)
I originally called the story I was working on The Origin of Power as a reference to the origin of species because it had themes Darwinism but that theme is no longer as prominent in the story so… back to the drawing board😓

This is as good a place as any to ask I have an idea for a magical girl series. The girls make pacts with Angels (Biblical and not) to unlock the power of their soul and fight demons. The main group composes of 5 characters. Yukki GoKegwa an ~American~ who manifests an Eagle allowing her to fly and giving her insane eyesight, Yui Niǎo a Chinese who manifests as a dragon giving her flight and great strength, Hope Grant who manifests a Lion giving her strength, the leader Ichigo Hanzo who manifests as a samurai or a ninja giving him either power or stealth, and Erica Homburg a German who's a great mechanic and builds all kinds of tools for the group. I've been thinking up plot lines for these characters for months now but haven't come up with any kind of name. Any suggestions are appreciated

A tip that I used was to use the backstory of the my main story to help me. It can help with also going on and deciding events too.

Her boyfriend Kelly P. is the leader of Gold Cross Crew, in order to get closer to her Ichiro joins the gang, leaving behind his good pal Mason Woods.
In the gang however Ichiro realizes it's a brotherhood of sorts, he became so focused on the brotherhood that his grades dropped, and his aunt lashes out at him, telling him to leave the gang! Intensity between both gangs reaches a climax as Ichiro is caught in the middle. Kelly P. and Claudette break up, Ichiro comforts her and Kelly P. beings to become an enemy to Ichiro.
As the story progresses, We meet Ichiro's mother, a woman who abandoned her son when he was just a child for a wealthy businessman named Scott Logan.
She wants to reconnect with her son after ten years apart.
However she soon becomes the antagonistic mother that returns in her sons life to only cause havoc.
**Disclaimer* There is much more to the story, eventually Ichiro & his mother reconcile but that's implied... they never actually do in the story though 😶

Apple Black/Black Apple ---I had created some creatures called the "Energy Monsters of Evex Caramni"for the original iteration of my world building back in my middle school years in the 70's -when I recreated the world for my reimagine of one of my comics, I had done a Google search Energy Monsters --and came up with the logo for "Monster Energy Drink" with the creepy green bolts. An epiphany was to turn those bolts into the creatures non-corporeal form.

I'm not really sure why the name was localized like that either... Aside from the localization of the name, though, it actually does make sense.
The Japanese title "遊戯王" is actually a two-word title if you translate it literally. "遊戯" (Yuugi), meaning "Game," and "王"(Ou), meaning "King." So it's pretty much "King of Games." Taking into account that Yu-Gi-Oh was not originally focused specifically on a card game, this name makes perfect sense.
(And yes, Yuugi's name literally means "Game," it's the same kanji and everything :'D)

I'm writing a manga called "Black Blood", however it isn't a horror series, it's a shonen battle series with a good amount of subversion. It gets the name from what the main character's species is, but now I'm reconsidering. Should I keep it or change it?

Hey, Ive been a fan for quite a bit, and I'd like to see a weapon drawing tutorial, guns, swords, spears, making original weapons, etc.
I already have a title in my head and Im just building the story around it. I was inspired by JoJo's Bizarre Adventure since its a name that describes one small feature of the story people expect "If its called JoJo.. Jojo must be in the story" while keeping everything else about the story secret.
How do you write sad stories without making them sappy? I love a good tearjerker.
Take this with a huge grain of salt because I'm by no means an expert, but giving a good reason for the grief and being careful not to make the characters reactions to over the top is probably the most important thing.
There is nothing worse for drama than the audience thinking "gee, what an oversensitive little bitch, just because someone decided to steal your lunch once doesn't mean you have to lock yourself in the bathroom and slit your wrists".
Other than that, I guess give it time?
The reader will probably need a while to get attached to your character, if you just have some random guy and let bad stuff happen to him the audience won't care too much because he's a fictional character and they know very little about them.
Normally you need a few moments to take in grave news and quite a few sad stories I've heard about didn't begin with/where not based on a single event but a series of bad things happening that either go worse or didn't really let up or even just one major event after which things just seem to stay bad for the main character.
We also tend to have a bit of a tendency to focus on the negative if we just had something bad happen to us, what might only be out boss firing us will turn into yet another bad event that just had to happen. If you accidentally get cut by glass you may also attribute it to everything going wrong whilst not really noticing the things that do go your way.
Also, maybe don't go too far into the other direction, melodrama is bad but so is just piling heaps of violence, death and general mayhem on your protagonist (depending on the setting you can do it a little but too much doesn't tend to work out).
First thing i thought off first time i heard the name of your comic, Apple Black, was Bible Black...as in, that hentai series with demonic cults and shit....yeeah, it grabbed my attention xD

I appreciate it Whyt I really needed this cause I have a story that is called Grand Adventure. The problem is that not only the title was practical but a one piece game also have that same title not to mention that it has a bit of the same blueprints of one piece in terms of the premise. Mind u that the name was not even intentional so now that I realized it Im thinking about changing it
I think it's also not a very memorable name. It's generic. Think of some other more memorable words for grand. For instance, if I were replacing that title I'd do something like Monument Venture because it has the combination of two -ent sounds. Rhyming and alliteration are always good for making a title catchy

I named my project Chaos Legion. It serves no relation to the Capcom video game. It centers around a Soldier who constantly battle against the God of Chaos who aims to open a portal that leads to the world that holds the legion of chaos. but now that I think about it, I might just name it Cacklet because it's the name of the sword that main protagonist uses and only his bloodline has access to wielding the Cacklet swords. There are plenty of swords in the story that holds the name Cacklet, for example the main protagonist held a sword named Pure Cacklet in the beginning of the project and in the fourth installment he obtained The Omega Cacklet while his brother wields THE Dawn Cacklet which originally wielded by his their father who died 8 installments later
I'm working on a manga and when I tried to come up with a name, I tried to come up with something short, sweet and to the point, even tried doing wordplay only to find that there are names for other things like companies and groups, so I just decided to go with a title that basically sums up most of the manga, and to a degree kinda breaks the fourth wall, which is what one of my characters in my manga does. And part of my title does have that "of" thing that you mentioned, but I added to the title, which is the fourth wall breaking part by making it sound like the main character is greeting the reader from where he came from (which is a planet that I made up)
I originally called the story I was working on The Origin of Power as a reference to the origin of species because it had themes Darwinism but that theme is no longer as prominent in the story so… back to the drawing board😓

I have an idea for a magical girl series. The girls make pacts with Angels (Biblical and not) to unlock the power of their soul and fight demons. The main group composes of 5 characters. Yukki GoKegwa an ~American~ who manifests an Eagle allowing her to fly and giving her insane eyesight, Yui Niǎo a Chinese who manifests as a dragon giving her flight and great strength, Hope Grant who manifests a Lion giving her strength, the leader Ichigo Hanzo who manifests as a samurai or a ninja giving him either power or stealth, and Erica Homburg a German who's a great mechanic and builds all kinds of tools for the group. I've been thinking up plot lines for these characters for months now but haven't come up with any kind of name. Any suggestions are appreciated
