I cought a ground squirrel when I was 10 or 12 by hand. Likely a sick squirrel or I would never have been sucessful! I got bit and squirrel got away. Parents far more concerned than I was took me to Dr. and lucky me had the rabies shot series. At that time were given in fat above waste, created big knots and were very painful unless given slowly. Very hard to convince nurse to give shot very slow and not just in out and done. Needless to say I stopped playing with wild animals after that!

I inherited two Arrow staplers from my Dad. One uses the regular staples and the other uses the round end staples for cables and wires. The best part was he had a lifetime supply of staples so I'll never have to buy any. It's about that time for me to break out the one for cables and put up the Christmas lights. I hope I get a warm day with no wind next week.

Good to hear they don't do the shots in the abdomen anymore. About the worst bite I ever got was from a copperhead. Fishing with my grandfather, walking where I shouldn't have been. It wasn't all that bad, to be honest. Him cutting me with a pocket knife was the worst of it. Glad it worked out for you.

Oh ScoutCrafter. Sorry to hear about the bite and need for rabies shots. Hope all goes well. Great job on the scraper. I like my T-50. Had it for years and years. I’m deathly afraid of snakes ever since I jumped into the foxhole in basic at the rifle range in Ft Leonard Wood, Mo. I was in and out like a flash. We used to feed Raccoons by hand all the time as kids, one of them came out of a tree one day and was foaming at the mouth and acting crazy and coming at people. Our neighbor grabbed his Revolver and Blasted it........I later heard that it wasn't actually Rabid but choking and probably came down out of the tree looking for help from its human friends but got Blasted instead.

Hi John, when I was 17, I lived in rural eastern CT, misstate very close to the RI state line. I was driving and saw a dead raccoon on the side of the road. I looked over and say a little one up in the tree right rear the mother. I was close to home so went home and got s box and some heavy leather welding gloves. I climbed the tree and grabbed the little baby raccoon. He?? Was cute as a button but I didn’t want to get bit. Once home, I took the box into the back yard and started to touch the little guy I dubbed Rascal. He was fairly calm but quick as a wink he ran up my are, above the glove and pitches on my shoulder and leaned into my neck. Needless to say I froze in panic. All I could imagine were those dozen needles in the stomach we always were told about. The odd thing was that he just stayed there itchy against my neck. I figured he was scared and needed to contact something warm and safe. After a little stroking with the leather gloves, I took him down and gently handled a bit. He was like a puppy and started playing with me. Needless to say he became a pet. I got a little leash and collar and walked him around. If he got scared he ran right up my body to my shoulder and leaned into me. So my girlfriend at the time also fell in love with him. We got a cage and put him in it at night. We fed him dry food like you. From the first night he “cried” all night long. What a racket. After a few night my father was going to kill me because it kept the whole house up. Stupid me, they are nocturnal and he wanted out at night. My girlfriend took him for a while but the same thing. Had little Rascal for a few months and finally brought him to a local kids zoo who took him in. What an adorable guy. (I have no idea his sex but he was Rascal). Nice tool restoration. I have a mutt and it’s a great tool. Nice restoration. That tool looks like it had its handle replaced at one time, but it was a beautiful handle.
    Best Regards,
    John

That chopper came out nice. I use BLO often, I really like the finish and color left behind. The handle on the chopper is no exception. Love the subtle color in the wood. The staple gun was really interesting. To be honest I guess I take them for granted especially since I have several of the slap type and the hand depressor type. I never thought about their origins or older variants.

I got my rabies shots when working in China along with every other possible jab. You reminded me of having to go back every few days for the next injection and I left the doctor's surgery looking like a pin cushion. I loved the chopper and I agree with you how useful the Big Mutt is, tree roots do not stand a chance. I also have one with a metal handle and a metal weight inside which gives a huge amount of momentum and I was able to remove a whole stump using it. Great video John as always.

Just bought an old arrow stapler that's a nice red color. Didn't know they made different colors. I use them a lot to hold wood that I'm gluing together as long as it isn't something that is important. Racoons are creepy with their little hands, creepy but cute. I've been known to toss some dog food a racoons way from time to time. Thanks Scout

I ate a small pkg of Nutter Butters 'nd tea while listening to your story. Glad you are alright. The stapler reminds me I spent a lot of time with one of those at the oval dining room table up at our cabin putting together raspberry cartons. Pints and quart sizes. We'd staple hundreds of those together then store them in the back of the middle part of the barn where we always had 3-4 refrigerators that we would fill with freshly picked raspberries.
I thought I had a raccoon around here but it turned out just to be a big very fluffy cat!
I used BLO on my father's white headed rubber(?) mallet the other day after I scraped it down using your scraping method. Not sure what else to do with it so maybe I will try the watco danish oil finish on it next. Any advice on how to deal with the white head? I was thinking maybe I'd use the belt sander to sand off the dirty cracked layer.

    • @ScoutCrafter

That was the kiss of death for many staple manufacturers. If you require a specific type staple that is hard to find or expensive you won’t succeed. 😃👍

  • @OldSneelock
    @OldSneelock ปีที่แล้ว

Hi John. I am careful around raccoons too. I use to have them wander into the yard. I would trap them and take them over to the north side of the Kalamazoo river and turn them loose in a big woods over there.
I only had to put a couple down that were obviously sick. I didn't want my dogs tangling with them. Anytime a raccoon that you don't have a understanding with just wanders up to you it is a big red flag.
I dilute the BLO to 50/50 with odorless mineral spirits and it will penetrate and dry in about 2 hours. After 3 to 4 coats and a good dry I put paste wax on the wood. Since it isn't a hard building finish is feels softer and won't raise blisters like a varnish coat.
    GET TO THE CHOPPER!! 😁😎
I like the Power Shot. The std stapler pulls the driver up when the spring fires. The Power Shot holds the driver down. It also can be fired by using the whole arm to press the trigger down.
When I had to buy staplers for Demmer so the shipping dept could staple tags to the pallets I bought them 4 Power Shots. I never had one turned in broken. I did have to have two or three on hand to replace the staplers that came up missing. Too close to pocket size. 😁😎

Great video! 👍Sorry about what happened to you. Glad you got that taken care of. Better safe than sorry 😞,like they used to say. I bet the hardest part at the Hospital 🏥 was the wait. My Hospital 🏥 even before COVID the average wait was 9 to 12 hours to see some one. One time it was a couple years ago, someone got shot in the foot 🦶🏼 or ankle I can’t remember but they made him wait in the waiting room it seemed like two or three hours before someone actually seen him. That was crazy and it is still like this today. The chopper you restored came out fantastic,❤️the handle. That Hansen tacker/stapler also cleaned up beautifully, looks like N.O.S. Maybe you might can find some staples at the Hardware store. I have some old Craftsman staplers and found some staples for it to match the gun. I found a match trough the Arrow Brand that matched exactly. Maybe next time you go to Jacktown or similar you may come across some 😃👍.Well again great video and I will be looking forward to seeing your video on Friday. 😄👍

There's a bat that sleeps under my roof tiles every now and again. He always leaves quite a bit of excrements behind on the pavement. I'm so worried about getting rabbis from sweeping it up (I sweep regulary).
Garden tools are fun to work on! The thing that helped me with BLO is whipping the handle dry after 10 minutes after applying. Much less stickiness. You probably learned me that though.

Alex- In Connecticut if you find a Bat in your home you are required to get the Rabies vaccine. If you’re not bitten the actual vaccine is very painless- just 4 shots in the shoulder over 3 weeks. 😃👍.

Sorry to hear about the bite. A few years ago there was a teenage girl who got very sick. It wasn't until she was in the hospital that she admitted that she had picked up a bat that had been on the ground. There was nothing that could be done for her. I feed deer but don't get too close. Wow! Glad to hear you're alright, rabies is definitely not something to play with! We had a bat follow me in the house in the summer bringing the dog in one night, I think he flew at a bug by the light and must have just dived right through the door as we went through. It was quite the circus getting it out. Rabies was definitely a concern, got him out though! Great video as always!

Once a day for a week, once a week for a month, once a month for a year. Exactly right. Every January the 1st I am in my red-back spider infested shed oiling the handles. Those bloody redbacks are vicious when they get going and don't just bite once. You are meant to go to hospital to sit in a cubicle and get observed for the day. The last time I got zapped I just stayed awake for 24 hours (mobile phone next to me in case). But I was zonked for three whole days, I had never felt so tired in my life.

Wow John, I know you were laughing but I wasn’t. Just because it was a scratch doesn’t make it any less dangerous regarding rabies. We are very lucky in Australia not to have rabies even though just about everything that crawls or slithers can kill you.😂 I like that stapler and the simplicity of older stuff before everything had to be smooth and covered. What I really noticed was how good the lettering was on it, even the smaller print was super crisp. To me that’s a “stamp” of quality and beats just a sticker or laser etching. Cheers Stuart 🇦🇺
