If you haven't decided Kalamazoo is kind of nice. Lot's of housing and a pretty good night life. Besides that there is a great community of builders in the area. 😎 When you do move I suggest renting a storage space and putting anything you might toss in there for a month or two while you move and get settled. I found a lot of things that I got rid of that would have been handy and well worth the $100.00 to give me a couple months of think time.

My very first workbench was made out of a solid core door that a company I was working for had thrown out. I left it at the house when I sold it, for all I know it could still be there being used. :D It made a perfect work bench!
You've just inspired me to organise my little set up, !! It's so easy to let things get messy, but so enjoyable when everything looks neat and tidy... Thanks for showing and the mention! That clamp is so gorgeous! Sometimes the combination of certain paints and the shape of something just work so well together, regardless of how otherwise wacky the color or the condition of the item/finish. I'd say just straighten the handle and leave the original paint alone, it has so much character! Those doors for bench tops are awesome too, I'd really like to salvage something like that myself. Good idea with the drawers instead of just blocking up the whole bench.
Hello LR! It's funny how as you get older, comfort means so much more. I have those anti-fatigue mats in front of the bench and they are great! Also the height of the machines really make them so much more enjoyable to use. I am 6'1" and I really love a tall workbench. (Unless I'm sitting) lol Thanks!!!!!!!!!
Ahhh, moving. We last moved 18 years ago and we still have stuff in the removal company boxes. After death and divorce they say moving is the next most stressful thing so take care. I like the idea of using old solid doors for a workbench!! I've been keeping my eye out for some as well. The drawers came out great and I'm sure you're happy with the extra storage. Great tour of the power tools and the tool store!! I'll volunteer if you need help packing up for the move!! Better get started now as it may take a few years and a forest worth of boxes. 😂👍
Hi Steve! I've been buying loads of buckets for the tools... They seem to hold up better then boxes. I bought those doors at National Wholesale Liquidators on 110 about 25 years ago!!!!! LOL Are they still there?
Not anymore. They still have their name on the old A&S then Caldor building in West Babylon where I grew up but it's all boarded up. I always keep my buckets and grab more when I find them. Got most from work from the maintenance guys after they laid down salt in the Winter.
I love your shop. You use every inch of that puppy. I'd hate to move your stuff, the cans, jars of fasteners alone would be a truckload! You don't know how much stuff you have until you move. Great mini tour though. Those forged C-clamps are great. Can't wait for more projects!

I love good stores with good customer service. Gosh, it's harder and harder to find friendly people much less good customer service. Believe it or not, the Harbor Freight I use has probably the best customer service I've ever seen! Thanks buddy.

Howdy, good to see ya. A year ago I had an auction for a guy, he had 6 large c clamps, all painted an ugly orange, he told me that he painted them with some industrial paint his dad had from the 40's or 50's, he gave them 8 to 10 coats. I got them for a few dollars(Nobody wanted them, to orange) What ever the paint, it is tough, during a blizzard in the winter, I tried to strip one, it was an effort of futility, I guess I have 6 ugly orange clamps, but they work good. LOL! Actually it would be great job security! The hard part for me is leaving behind stuff I accumulated like all my hardware and metal and wood, always saving them for that special project!
Oh yeah. One of my favorite work benches is from an old door from a hospital. It was so heavy one man could not lift it. Your shop is very organized and well thought out.
Very nice job on the work bench drawers. I have a 3 car garage that I am slowly reclaiming after being used for storage for so many years. I am building work benches with wheels on them so they can be moved around til I decide on there final location. I hang a lot of stuff overhead so it is not a waste of floor space. I collect old cast iron air cooled engines and they are slowly being put on shelves to open more floor space.
Hi Chuck! It's amazing how fast we can fill up a space! LOL! I learned every trick in the book for cramming junk into areas that weren't used,,, I'm full up now! =D
Great mish-mash! I totally agree, tall work benches are great. I never thought to mention it before, but everything in my shop has been adapted so that i can move whatever it is with my pallet jack. Those modified pallet type basis add 4 inches to everything. Great stuff, cheers.

Bondus is great. I have a set of screwdriver handled Ball Drivers that i got in 1976. For die work being able to drive socket head screws at an off angle is invaluable. 😆😎

Hi scout, looks to me like your prepping for your big move, getting things squared up . I must say I like the mod you did to the bench top, you could try rubbing a candle on the drawers to help them slide. Have you got stops on them incase you drag one out in a rush,and dump a fully loaded drawer on youself, ?.lol. man that tool shop was great, don't we just love em". Nice response from the tool, company on the allen keys , one of the tool shops I frequent seems to be stopping keeping good stuff,and replacing it whith cheap chinese tools, a sign of the times I think. Hi Stuart! We have this stuff here like masonite, if you cut strips a few inches wide and place them on the bottom of the drawers and top of the bench they are super slippery face to face! I had a drawer that I did that too and it was smooth as glass!!!!!! Thanks!!!!!!
There is a Travers showroom and distribution center in Duncan SC (you can see it from I-85) between Spartanburg and Greenville. Worth a stop to go into the large overstock/discontinued sales room (leave your wallet in you car otherwise you'll go home with the trunk full). Travers and McMaster-Carr are the go-to distributors for industrial grade tools and supplies in the Southeast. If one doesn't have what you need, the other probably does. When you call, a person answers who treats you like your business is really important to them.... which is why they get my business. Cheers from NC/USA
Yes! I think the SC office is their main office.. They are super friendly and like you said don't give you an attitude if you only place a small order! I even told the president that when I spoke to him, I said "I know you are running a great company because everyone is happy and like their jobs, that means more then you know" We hit it off ever since then! McMaster Carr is the tops as far as having everything but getting a catalog from them is a bit difficult. =) Thanks!!!!!!!
You know the very second you get the shop straightened out you'll get the call to start moving and up will go the camera and the new shop will look like a proving ground for a-bomb powered heavy equipment. But you'll get it. Might even need an annex like Uncle Sneelock! Thanks CS and BLESSINGS!

Real cool! I would run either 2 flat or 2 L angles of stainless steel under the drawers on each side. My grandfather did that on his workbench he built in either the 50s or 60s. I keep it in my bedroom! I remember being too short to see what was on top of it, couldn't wait to grow tall enough. Bondhus T handles are the best in my book. I have a set with Allen ball ends that I enjoy very much
You're right! The angle iron really help stiffen the benches! I used to pick up old bed frames when they were thrown out just for that reason! LOL Thanks!!!!

Hi Joe! Yes! The Ply on Ply works very good. I remember I had a drawer that had masonite on masonite and it was like on bearings! LOL Remember the MDF craze in the 80's!!!!!

Hi Mike! You are so right! A roll away tool box is great for stuff you use all the time but these simple drawers are deep and long and can hold lot of weight for little work and cost.... Really a great upgrade considering most workbenches are way too short! Thanks!!!!!!!!

Hi Andrew! In reality I never run two machines at once so they are all on one circuit and I never blew a fuse! I have all the lights on one circuit and all the machines on another! Two 15 amp circuits! If I had multiple people running machines I would have a problem! LOL Thanks!!
My mom and dad made so many work tables from old doors in their Brooklyn shop. But then my dad found out about Birch Plywood and was hooked on that since it had such a smooth finish on top of it. I had an entire box of Bondhus hex sets the first time I went to the LI antique tool show, a contractor bought it up for $35. Even if you break them you can send them back and they will replace them, no questions ask. Other companies treat their hex tools as consumables because of all the torque force on them.
Hi Kent!! Years back Home Depot got a load of Baltic Birch Plywood from Russia or someplace and I bought 30 sheets and made all my furniture from it!!!!! That stuff was awesome but cutting it you NEEDED a mask!

I too like my workbench higher. That's a very clever solution you implemented to raise your bench height. (looking at the drawer bottom... you obviously have an overstock of screws). Enjoyed the vid as always.
I've made workbenches from old solid core door too. They work great. If your drawers get hard to slide, you could rub paraffin on the sliding surfaces.

I have a fraction amount of tools you do in a large double wide garage. I am both ashamed of how disorganized mine is and admire how organized yours is. Time for me to turn 2 and get my act together. You sir are a true craftsman, I salute your skills and innovation.
Tom! We all get un-organized every so often because of time constraints and getting too much stuff... The rule of thumb is if you don't use it in three years toss it but with a shop that don't work! We have screws and nails that are waiting just for that day when we need them! LOL We just need better ways to store stuff! LOL Thanks so much!!!!!!!
@@ScoutCrafter I have coffee cans with fasteners in them. When I toss something I take all the fasteners off and save them. The I will waste an hour searching instead of going to the hardware store and completing the task in 10 minutes Lololololol
LOL Virginia, one thing I found out a long time ago is you can have as much fun in a 8x8 foot shop as you can in a large shop! We all dream of bigger and better equipped shops but when you look back at some of your most enjoyable work it was often done with minimal space and tools! =) Thanks so much!!!!
nice shop you have Scout Crafter lots of good equipment and great ideas to set it up. I know what you mean about good tool companies looking after you. I got one of those Arrow hammer staplers at a yard sale but it was missing the part that holds in the staples. I contacted the company the part was i think $5. us between exchange and shipping it would have been $20. the guy told me don't worry about it and sent me the part free Arrow staples is an excellent company.
Hope you have about a 5 year lead time for moving. It will take you a while to go through everything. I moved from a big house to a garage apartment 1 year ago and I'm still trying to find stuff. The only advantage since retiring is I get to travel about half the year. I liked your idea for the door workbench tops. Good video Scout.

Finally got to see the mill. All my workbenches are 3/8" plate but my computer room desks are made from door blems. I'm supposed to move too but I still can't figure out what to do with all the stuff? I wish you luck with that one. 😁 Thanks for the tour video I always enjoy seeing someone else's mess!

The "City" politics and values are not mine and they keep cramming more and more people into this place! I want small town values and neighbors that feel the same... =) (plus acreage)
Thanks for the great tour of the shop. You showed the gas meter and I've noticed the electric meters on one of the walls. How do the guys read those? Here they are all outside in the front yard against the house. In fact the electric has some sort of little transmitter so the reader doesn't have to get out of the truck. - Kathie
Hi Kathie! Yes! All the new homes have the updated meters and they are slowly updating the older meters to radio transmit the info in... Mine are old and such a pain to read! The Con Edison meter checker comes every month to read the meters but I'm not always up so I have to send my readings in but they don't always go thru.. A real mess!!!! Radio meters are much better!

Bondus is great. I have a set of screwdriver handled Ball Drivers that i got in 1976. For die work being able to drive socket head screws at an off angle is invaluable. 😆😎

Hi scout, looks to me like your prepping for your big move, getting things squared up . I must say I like the mod you did to the bench top, you could try rubbing a candle on the drawers to help them slide. Have you got stops on them incase you drag one out in a rush,and dump a fully loaded drawer on youself, ?.lol. man that tool shop was great, don't we just love em". Nice response from the tool, company on the allen keys , one of the tool shops I frequent seems to be stopping keeping good stuff,and replacing it whith cheap chinese tools, a sign of the times I think. Keep on whith the clean up scout, now springs coming I'll be doing the same . Best wishes. Stuart.
Hi Stuart! We have this stuff here like masonite, if you cut strips a few inches wide and place them on the bottom of the drawers and top of the bench they are super slippery face to face! I had a drawer that I did that too and it was smooth as glass!!!!!! Thanks!!!!!!

There is a Travers showroom and distribution center in Duncan SC (you can see it from I-85) between Spartanburg and Greenville. Worth a stop to go into the large overstock/discontinued sales room (leave your wallet in you car otherwise you'll go home with the trunk full).
Travers and McMaster-Carr are the go-to distributors for industrial grade tools and supplies in the Southeast. If one doesn't have what you need, the other probably does. When you call, a person answers who treats you like your business is really important to them.... which is why they get my business.

Yes! I think the SC office is their main office.. They are super friendly and like you said don't give you an attitude if you only place a small order! I even told the president that when I spoke to him, I said "I know you are running a great company because everyone is happy and like their jobs, that means more then you know" We hit it off ever since then! McMaster Carr is the tops as far as having everything but getting a catalog from them is a bit difficult. =) Thanks!!!!!!!
You know the very second you get the shop straightened out you'll get the call to start moving and up will go the camera and the new shop will look like a proving ground for a-bomb powered heavy equipment. But you'll get it. Might even need an annex like Uncle Sneelock!

Real cool! I would run either 2 flat or 2 L angles of stainless steel under the drawers on each side. My grandfather did that on his workbench he built in either the 50s or 60s. I keep it in my bedroom! I remember being too short to see what was on top of it, couldn't wait to grow tall enough. Bondhus T handles are the best in my book. I have a set with Allen ball ends that I enjoy very much
You're right! The angle iron really help stiffen the benches! I used to pick up old bed frames when they were thrown out just for that reason! LOL Thanks!!!!

I mean thin stuff not attached to the drawers but to the bench to allow for smoother sliding. They looked pretty well built and solid enough to me!

Consider closing the drawer front plates fully so you exclude a lot of dust and debris getting into those drawers over time.

Cool drawers! Take a bar of soap and rub it all over the bottom of the plywood and it’ll slide nice.
Hi Joe! Yes! The Ply on Ply works very good. I remember I had a drawer that had masonite on masonite and it was like on bearings! LOL Remember the MDF craze in the 80's!!!!!

Hi Mike! You are so right! A roll away tool box is great for stuff you use all the time but these simple drawers are deep and long and can hold lot of weight for little work and cost.... Really a great upgrade considering most workbenches are way too short! Thanks!!!!!!!!

Thankfully, although I have a tiny shed for a workshop, I do have 1-1/2 acres so when I get ready, big workshop here I come!

Hi Andrew! In reality I never run two machines at once so they are all on one circuit and I never blew a fuse! I have all the lights on one circuit and all the machines on another! Two 15 amp circuits! If I had multiple people running machines I would have a problem! LOL Thanks!!
My mom and dad made so many work tables from old doors in their Brooklyn shop. But then my dad found out about Birch Plywood and was hooked on that since it had such a smooth finish on top of it. I had an entire box of Bondhus hex sets the first time I went to the LI antique tool show, a contractor bought it up for $35. Even if you break them you can send them back and they will replace them, no questions ask. Other companies treat their hex tools as consumables because of all the torque force on them.
Hi Kent!! Years back Home Depot got a load of Baltic Birch Plywood from Russia or someplace and I bought 30 sheets and made all my furniture from it!!!!! That stuff was awesome but cutting it you NEEDED a mask!
You have some nice tools....My little work shed is 12 x 16 and is packed full of stuff and needs a Spring cleaning

I too like my workbench higher. That's a very clever solution you implemented to raise your bench height. (looking at the drawer bottom... you obviously have an overstock of screws). Enjoyed the vid as always.

I've made workbenches from old solid core door too. They work great. If your drawers get hard to slide, you could rub paraffin on the sliding surfaces.

I have a fraction amount of tools you do in a large double wide garage. I am both ashamed of how disorganized mine is and admire how organized yours is. Time for me to turn 2 and get my act together.

Tom! We all get un-organized every so often because of time constraints and getting too much stuff... The rule of thumb is if you don't use it in three years toss it but with a shop that don't work! We have screws and nails that are waiting just for that day when we need them! LOL We just need better ways to store stuff! LOL Thanks so much!!!!!!!
@@ScoutCrafter I have coffee cans with fasteners in them. When I toss something I take all the fasteners off and save them. The I will waste an hour searching instead of going to the hardware store and completing the task in 10 minutes Lololololol

LOL Virginia, one thing I found out a long time ago is you can have as much fun in a 8x8 foot shop as you can in a large shop! We all dream of bigger and better equipped shops but when you look back at some of your most enjoyable work it was often done with minimal space and tools! =) Thanks so much!!!!

nice shop you have Scout Crafter lots of good equipment and great ideas to set it up. I know what you mean about good tool companies looking after you. I got one of those Arrow hammer staplers at a yard sale but it was missing the part that holds in the staples. I contacted the company the part was i think $5. us between exchange and shipping it would have been $20. the guy told me don't worry about it and sent me the part free Arrow staples is an excellent company.

Hope you have about a 5 year lead time for moving. It will take you a while to go through everything. I moved from a big house to a garage apartment 1 year ago and I'm still trying to find stuff. The only advantage since retiring is I get to travel about half the year. I liked your idea for the door workbench tops. Good video Scout.

Finally got to see the mill. All my workbenches are 3/8" plate but my computer room desks are made from door blems. I'm supposed to move too but I still can't figure out what to do with all the stuff? I wish you luck with that one. 😁 Thanks for the tour video I always enjoy seeing someone else's mess!

Hi Paul! I want to move in about 2 years, looking for a nice State that is of old fashioned values. I live in Queens now and this place is unrecognizable from when I was a kid. The "City" politics and values are not mine and they keep cramming more and more people into this place! I want small town values and neighbors that feel the same... =) (plus acreage)

Thanks for the great tour of the shop. You showed the gas meter and I've noticed the electric meters on one of the walls. How do the guys read those? Here they are all outside in the front yard against the house. In fact the electric has some sort of little transmitter so the reader doesn't have to get out of the truck. - Kathie
Hi Kathie! Yes! All the new homes have the updated meters and they are slowly updating the older meters to radio transmit the info in... Mine are old and such a pain to read! The Con Edison meter checker comes every month to read the meters but I'm not always up so I have to send my readings in but they don't always go thru.. A real mess!!!! Radio meters are much better!
I made my work bench from old barn beams! And I like them nice and high too!

National Wholesale Liquidators used to have runs of oddball stuff cheap! These doors are super heavy but really strong and straight! $15 each! Sweet! LOL

Hi Zachary! I never liked living in the city... Ever since I was 8 years old and visited a relative upstate. I saw hundreds of trees and deer and no neighbors... I remember telling my parents on the way home "One day I will live like this" ever since then I felt like a fish out of water... =) Thanks!!!!!
I completely understand. We live outside the city limits in the country with pastures as our front and rear view. I’ve seen some videos of you working on some acreage so I can understand that being your dream destination. Good luck to you on the move.
