I added a new Samsung 850 EVO 500GB 2.5-Inch SATA III Internal SSD drive to my 2009 Acer laptop back in November 2016 (right before the prices on Samsung SSDs started to skyrocket) it replaced the original 320GB mechanical drive. The boot-up time and speed of my laptop is incredible, well worth adding the SSD drive to my laptop, and it was so easy to do. The memory was maxed out so that saved me a little money. I also added the same SSD drive to my 2009 desktop, once again the speed is amazing.
I have the same model of laptop. Its a descent laptop for what I use it for. There's other things the customer can upgrade if they want to. They can upgrade the wifi card to one that also supports bluetooth. Upgrade the optical drive to a blu-ray drive or if she wants a lot more internal space replace the optical drive with a second hard drive/SSD with a drive caddy. I'm not saying this customer would do this, its other options things to do someone wouldn't normally think of now.

Great video!! One of your best, in my view. Also glad you mentioned how replacing an HDD with and SSD makes the laptop more robust. HDDs don't like being move around/jostled too much, and unfortunately that's exactly what happens with laptops. I cringe whenever I see someone sliding a laptop across their desk while it's running.

I agree SSD is far better then HDD but fact is that they don't have a lot of storage like HDD have. The other downside is that you pay far more for a gig then a HDD. But I believe that in the future the SSD will replace the HDD for sure. And then something new and better will be invented. Circle of technology ;-)
There's nothing wrong with a laptop with both SSD and a mechanical drive, it's about knowing how to take good care of it. It's a computer after all, and people forget to take good care of them and see them as disposable electronics, but with good care they can even last for decades, which I know from personal experience.
What I like about Carey Holzman as Tech he explains what he does to the point and he knows exact information about the product.

I have an old Dell XPS L702x i7 @ 2.0 Gh that's about eight years old. I'd already replaced it with an Inspiron 17-7999 i7 @ 2.8 Gh when it stopped working at the post screen. I set it aside for over a year before I had some spare time and thought I'd give a try at reinstalling Windows. Being an old-timer, I had ordered the system with the backup cd's for the OS and software. I was able to do that, so I decided to do some upgrades so it was worth keeping around as a backup. Supposedly, the XPS L702x maxed out at 8Gb (2x4GB DDR3 PC3L 12800 1600Mh) system memory, but I'd read online that depending on the particular motherboard it could use and recognize 16GB (2x8GB). After updating the BIOS to the latest version, I swapped out the RAM. It was recognized by the BIOS and worked just fine, although I had to reboot twice and reseat the RAM before that happened. The OS (Windows 7 Pro) recognized it as well, but it really didn't make a huge difference in the system performance. I already had two SATA hard drives installed. The boot drive was a 500GB 7200 RPM Toshiba and original, the data drive was a 1TB 7200 RPM Toshiba I had bought from Dell sometime after I paid the system off, but while it was still under extended warranty, so it's only about four years old. Since the boot drive was kind of long in the tooth, I cloned it to a Samsung 500GB SSD drive using an old Cables to go external drive reader and Samsung's proprietary Disk Cloning Utility. Now the system boots in about a third of the time, and it's not noticeably any slower than the newer Dell. One note, the Samsung Utility will only clone the active partition, unless you're cloning from a Samsung to a Samsung drive, so if you're depending on the manufacturers hidden partition to reinstall the OS like HP and most Dell systems do nowadays, it's probably a good idea to use Acronis or some other utility to capture the hidden partition the manufacturer's customized BIOS uses to wipe the Windows partition and restore the system to the original state.

Crucial's Advisor Tool is awesome and I've found that buying direct from them the prices are very competitive and reasonable and they are great at backing up their product. If going from a larger HDD to a smaller SSD, nothing beats the Data Migration tool from Samsung. With other brand SSDs, there is either nothing, or a promo for Acronis which is very user unfriendly. Best case is the same size HDD to SSD and using the Cavalry Retriever dock, a very easy way to clone the drive as you know. On another note, those Coke glasses are awesome! I've got a bunch of the 32 oz versions. I remember when they were $1 at the store, and now they're going upwards of $10 each these days.

Just a tip Carey on a HP laptop at least one in the last few years you can get can get the model number by rebooting the computer and hitting the ESC key and on the menu that appears hit F1 key and the system information will be displayed including the born on date, mainboard information, and BIOS version.
I just did a similar upgrade on a Samsung Series 4 for somebody. Weirdly enough swapping from 4GB to 2 x 4GB matched Crucial & an original Hitachi 500GB HDD to a Samsung 850 EVO 500GB (Small world)!
It was ok fast, but when I went into BIOS, SATA III was not enabled - did that and now getting the correct read / write speeds, & it boots really quick.
Original was also MBR, but when I cloned to the EVO I also moved it to GPT. But to me ticking the SATA III box made the difference
some of the newer laptops you have to take the whole thing apart. in order to get to it.

they're all good dogs Holzman xD. i already did a RAM upgrade on my laptop, a nice boost in overall performance, specially on GTA 5, no more lag spikes, considering the SSD upgrade, so if i get troubled i know were to come, but I'd like to know how to increase the allocated RAM to the integrated graphics chip on a HP laptop aswell, it's a HP Pavilion 15 TS / a6 5200 8gb DDR3L w Radeon R3 8400 HD 512 DDR3L, I'd like to add another 512 Mbs, but the options seem to be hidden or missing on the BIOS, and i think she could've gotten a bigger boost if she ran disc cleanup and defrag, cause even after the upgrade that boot time was still slower than mine

I recommend you avoid TLC or '3D' flash technology SSD's and ONLY go with MLC or '2D' flash technology drives. The difference is that TLC flash stores 3 bits per cell, while MLC stores 2 bits per cell. The result is that the TLC drives have an order of magnitude LESS write cycle life time vs the MLC type. MLC drives are usually faster as well. TLC drives are cheaper, and now you know why!
(Single bit per cell flash is also available, but it is MUCH more expensive than the MLC type, however this type is preferred by server farms that need the extra speed and write endurance.)
As far as the max ram possible, many older thinkpads were stated as having a max ram size of 8gb, however the chipsets and processors in use could make use of 8gb dimm sticks, and as these computers had two dimm slots, they could in fact, be upgraded to 16gb. The reason that Lenovo stated the lower limit was that at the time these machines were released, the larger dimms were not commonly available, so Lenovo hadn't yet tested against the larger size rams. They never did update the spec sheets as by the time larger rams were available the models in question had been discontinued.
You can check on the thinkpad forum sites for user test data. Crucial's database echo's Lenovo's official data, so it is NOT accurate in the case of max supported memory. It IS accurate as far as speed is concerned.

Just using that as an example. The same applies to any computer, the maker's max ram spec's are based on their testing as if the time they released their product. I mention Lenovo because that is what I own, and I am relating MY experience upgrading MY laptop.
You're suggesting I should have instructed my customer to buy memory modules larger than the manufacturer supports and roll the dice to see if it would work? What if it doesn't work? What do you say to the customer who has gone without their computer for days and spent money only to be told the memory is not compatible? What's your plan?
Certainly not! I mentioned that in the case of Thinkpads, users have reported on forums that they have been able to upgrade with more memory than the official specs indicated. Is the same thing true for Dell and HP computers? I don't know, but there are probably user forums for those computers as well. What you do in a business and what you recommend to your customers must be conservative, I get that, I agree with your advice. However, if a DIY tech comfortable person is willing to do the research, and understands the risks (in this case probably only a risk of wasting his money on something that didn't work), they might be able to do better. Eventually I will upgrade my X220 to 16gb, I've done the research, and I know that this is possible.

2 min's no upgrade, 2 mins with ram upgrade, and 1min 18 sec with both. i think the best would be a clean install. I did both of these upgrades on my 4 year old asus g75 and it boots in 10 to 15 seconds depending on how fast i put my password in.
but i understand she may not have wanted to do a clean install.

originally had windows 8 on it and i want to say it was around 30 to 45 seconds

I do PC work too, but for free as I have another job, and PC work is done out of love for it. In my small town, I always did computer work for free for Police, and Firemen, Just $20 for others.
