Great video Carey!! My mom has a similar laptop I bought for her, it has a mechanical drive. She's happy with it now but I know one day the drive will need to be replaced. After I bought it I looked up how to dissemble it and realized how much of a pain it is. I told her when the time comes we will replace the hard drive and memory one time for the simple fact of how difficult it is.

I came across your programs accidently and you have saved me from having to take medication for high blood pressure plus my foul language has been reduced to zero. Your instructions and commentary are excellent and exceptionally clear and understandable. I wish you good luck and God bless you and your work. Patrick from Ireland.

I do a lot of upgrades, I only clone if the previous (original) drive is without errors as I feel a clean install is best. This optimizes the new drive with a fresh install and I install previous programs (not all) and restore data. This is not a perfect process, but it ensures a cleaner running system. However, I do clone when I see fit. Carey is correct that Acronis is tops for this cloning and backups. I have tried out the others and feel that Acronis is the best.

I had a Kingston drive fail after ~9 months, they replaced it under warranty real quick and then it's been in service in a laptop, PS3 and then now my wife's Thinkpad for... I guess 2 years now! Still tests excellent.
ADATA and Kingston are my go-to for SSD's and RAM.

Boot times will drop significantly after a time as Windows sorts prefetch for the new drive AND sets trim for it. You can speed it up if you “optimize” the new drive with in the properties for the drive at first boot up. You can also just type “optimize” (no quotes) in Search. I recently installed an SSD in a SATA II laptop and boot times dropped to 23 seconds.

Here is an idea for anyone who cannot read those make and model labels. Take out your mobile phone and snap a picture of the label then well you just made a copy and now you can enlarge it on the phone screen to read it.

I sometimes watch your videos live when I have spare time though on this occasion was looking for a specific answer on you tube about cloning which I will be doing in a couple of days on my old but generally reliable MacBook Pro I got on sale 13 years ago but glad I watched it all the way through and you didn't cut away from the camera when ran into problems opening up the laptop but instead systematically took the steps to opening up an unfamiliar piece of equipment ; taking out the obvious screws first, then when it didn't pop right off looking around for plastic clips like your sister did on one of those tower-less Dell Insperion desktops which you popped loose most of the way with a good tool for the job until nope 2 more screws under the feet someone suggested you look for then still wouldn't come and it wasn't until you determined that there were no more screws visible in the mostly loosened up case and no where else to hide them that there had to be at least 2 more plastic snaps and would only now apply more force than usually comfortable with in prying or pulling them loose. This is the sort of thing that gives the nonprofessional technician or mostly retired ones like me confidence to tackle a job where I know something unexpected is likely to come up that may end up either costing a few more dollars on parts or an improvised DIY patch job that could later be repaired when resources or finances allow. Hopefully this Mac will last another 13 years before having to do anything major to it again, which it will if put some new thermal paste on the CPU and heat sink but lot of small breakable wires to unplug one-handed on logic board to do that and I have reached my budget for computer repair for the next few years and there is software for Macs that will make the fan come on more often than Apple has it setup for so it will be quieter even though this is hard on the CPU after a few years but I don't play games on this thing, just write stories kill time on you tube and pay bills that I can't let slide.

HP probably designed it that way to get people to buy a new laptop when the HDD on this one goes bad.

For a $14 album, may I suggest John Lithgow's "Singing in the Bathtub"? I recently purchased my 3rd or 4th copy (I have given several copies away to children young and old, and worn out one cd). Fun fun!

Can you Do a video on how to Swap out a small M.2 PCIe NVME SSD to a larger M.2 PCIe NVME SSD in a desktop. with only one M.2 socket slot. My Hp Came with a 128gb SSd and a 1tb HDD, but my Os is on the SSd and It is too small with all the windows 10 update, I only have about 12 gigs of space left on my C: Drive.

Hi Carey, This laptop you're working on looks exactly like one I have. The problem with mine is the fan is making strange noises. I tried taking the laptop apart by removing the screws but couldn't get it apart. You mentioned something about releasing the hinge. I couldn't see exactly how you did it so I'm still afraid of trying to open it up to change the fan. If you still have the laptop that was used in this video; can you show how to re-open this particular laptop and then knowing what screws to remove for the fan? Thank you. Videos are superior, keep them coming. :))))

Carey, love your show. Cryptocurrency isn't a fad though, imo it is the future of money. Mining has moved to ASICs and purpose built mining cards, leaving the gaming market alone, thankfully. The good byproduct of the mining craze is used graphics cards at really good prices if you know how to get the original bios back. I have a reflashed RX 580 that I bought, cleaned, put some MX4 into and reflashed. I got it for $85 and have had no issues. I did remove the backplate for better thermals and it runs fast and quiet.
I just upgraded the ram on my buddy's laptop last month and I owe all my knowledge to you and others like you that show us the way. Much love and respect.

Thinking I'll do the same with my version 1 Microsoft Studio... Any reason the Acronis software would not work?... I know the Studio has a hybrid drive so could I separate the two to run the system from the M.2?

Hey Carey, I have an old Lenovo M series desktop that I need help with. I updated the bios from Lenovo's site (the update did show that it was compatible with my model), And now it will not boot . I can access the bios menu, but nothing will boot, not even a live usb. I have searched for instructions on how to roll back the firmware, and also the older firmware, and can't find it. Any suggestions? Or I'd be happy to send it to you.

Hey Carey, Love your channel :)
I'm a 2012, registered full version Acronis user that have upgraded to 2017 version. Will this promo with Acronis include discounts also for registered users or just for new customers. If Acronis decides to give something back to long time Acronis users in terms of discount, I'm in on that.
Secondly, I just ordered my Magewell Pro Capture Quad HDMI An I am thrilled to use it and see (Like you!) if they are really the phrase *Separate The Men From The Boys Hardware.* Darn thing costs $899! - Please make a small review/thoughts of your Magewell Device and how your feelings about it after two years, :)
Btw, you can reach recovery window by clicking Power > Restart while pressing Left shift key.
Anyway, I dig you and your channel, just subbed!
