    Man, this is honestly one of the best leather craft videos I've seen on youtube. There are so many little gems in here that I'm going to try. I loved how you talked about sanding the leather, I feel it is something that I oftentimes over looked in videos.
    I'm gonna make one of these wallets once I buy more leather, do you have any suggestions for leather?

    • @BlackFlagLeatherGoods

      Oh dude thank you so much! That means a lot! TH-cam has a rough learning curve so I'm happy to hear people are enjoying my stuff!
      The main leather I use is Yukon Black 4-5oz by SB Foot. I love the stuff. I have 4 hides of it just in case OA Leather runs out. I'm a big SB Foot fan. It can be a little tough to burnish but it looks amazing and it's pretty affordable. If you can afford Horween, it's probably my favourite leather to work with.
      Thanks for watching!

    Hi Tim, thanks for this video, it is really helpful. I had a couple of questions -
    - What thickness do you use for the leather in this?
    - When you are marking and punching the stitch holes with the punching irons, you went from the inside and punched them outward. Is this always the way it should be done or do you ever punch from the outside inwards?
    Thanks again for the video!

      I think mine are set at 4mm. I have heard a good rule of thumb is to set them for the same thickness as the leather piece you're stitching through. I set mine a long time ago and never change it though.

    With the gluing part, how do you ensure you don't glue too wide a strip? I'm concerned that I would make a product like this and the card wont go in because I've glued too wide.
    I just ordered a beginners kit online today for leatherworking and am excited to get into it soon!

    Brilliant video and a lovely pattern. I might make one as my daily user. How did you make your leather balm. I've made one out of beeswax and olive oil but I'm interested in other people's. Thank you.

    • @BlackFlagLeatherGoods
      @BlackFlagLeatherGoods  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey thank you! I don't really have a recipe. I think it's around a 1:1:1 ratio of beeswax, cocoa butter, and sweet almond oil. Mine is still a bit harder than I'd like so I'll probably dial back the beeswax or use more oil next batch, but equal parts is probably a good place to start.
      The only thing that concerns me about olive oil is that it can go rancid. I know it doesn't get used in the kitchen for oiling a wood cutting board or coating cast iron for that reason. With that said, I've heard of a lot of people using it successfully with leather, though.
      Thanks for watching!

    Hey man love your videos. Been looking to get into leather working and they’ve been very informative. What are some sizes you’d recommend for bevels and stitch chisels? Been having difficulty figuring out what I should get to start making wallets with.

    • @BlackFlagLeatherGoods
      @BlackFlagLeatherGoods  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      For bevels I'd probably go with a 1 or 2. If you're planning on using thinner leather (2-3oz), I'd probably use a 1. For chisels, just grab a set of diamond chisels to start. They're pretty cheap and effective. Try to get ones that aren't black if you can. The black ones are actually covered in a coating that makes them stick to the leather. I had to sand it off mine back when I was using them. Check my video descriptions. I think I link to a good set.
      EDIT: These ones! amzn.to/2OTv5Jf
      I'd probably go with 3 or 4mm

    The edges get mushroomed while burnishing...even after bevelling 😥😥😥 what to do?

    • @BlackFlagLeatherGoods
      @BlackFlagLeatherGoods  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey thanks for watching!
      You could always do a quick bevel again after it mushrooms out just to get rid of that lip. Or you might want to pick up a beveler that takes off a bit more material. I use a Palosanto #2 which removes 1.2mm and I never have that issue anymore. It did used to happen to me sometimes when using my old Amazon beveler and it was frustrating. Depending on how bad it is, you might be able to just sand it off too.
      Give those a shot and let me know how it goes!

    what kind of leather did you use?

  • @TheCraftySmith89

    So I just found this tutorial after getting into leather. I recently got into Leather working and ran into a snafu with the tape I was using. I noticed here you are using white masking tape, when I used the blue painters tape I had a lot of residue left on the leather that I could get off ( discoloration of the leather ensued). I'm wondering if the White masking tape you use does that at all or if there is something different between the 2.

    • @BlackFlagLeatherGoods
      @BlackFlagLeatherGoods  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      To be honest I've pretty much only used white masking tape and I've only ever had that problem if I left the tape on for too long. I usually tape it, cut it, remove the tape immediately.
      There must be something different about painter's tapes because I once tried to use green painter's tape and it wouldn't stick at all.
      It might be worth your while to try switching tape...
