So I thought there was only one Hutet? They built more? Another thing...a suggestion...I am watching a moment when Taibak's fleet is cloaked, but the image is clearly visible. Obviously a blank starfield is boring...can you "ghost" the warbirds at these times, maybe? Semi-transparent?

there was nothing wrong with the ships themselves they were just being used in the wrong way and the crew were ignoring safety rules to speed up their rate of fire and its ended badly for them.

Size of a damned Star Destroyer, those Dominion BBs. . .
Lets look at the components of the video. We have lesser known canon characters being fleshed out, the main characters of the piece are the ships and in this case they are Giants, both sides have politics and tactics which inform their actions and drive the narrative, there are also sub plots which have the can have an effect on the outcome of the main story and to wrap it all up we have a great score that hits the right notes at the right moments. It is bloody good story telling and the reason I subscribed.

Actions like this are what prompted the use of the remains. But the romulans are only 2 months into the war at this point.

I have said it before on your videos but I will say it again. These documentary type sessions brings a whole new dimension to the Star Trek golden era. I loved the Dominion War arc but you have brought it to a whole new level. Same with the Borg incursions. Particularly love your use of Holst in this video.

hmm, here's something intresting to consider, the Scimitar class was designed to be immune to anti-proton scan... and while it "appears" to the federation 2 years after the war... it was likely built with the purpose of facing off with the dominion... especially against dominion battleships. with 52 pulse disruptors able to engage smaller targets or be concentrated to drain the shields of larger targets, 27 torpedo launchers able to provide massive crippling firepower... then her massive load of scorpion attack fighters, each carrying a distruptor strong enough to inflict serious damage on a jem hadar attack ship... it seems this ship was designed not to fight the federation, not to destroy earth... but... to destroy the dominion... to smash dominion fleets, then whip out all life on the planet below, eliminating the garrisons so the worlds were prime for romulan takeover.
the ship may have even been TESTED during that war... operating independently hunting isolated groups, with its cloak, then destroying them before they even realized what was going on.
Interesting they didn’t commission at least 5-10 of these ships to be at the head of major fleets. War could have gone much differently.
Then again…with that kind of power the Romulans might very well have not stopped with the Dominion but set there eyes on the rest of the Alpha, Beta and Delta quadrants.
Kinda glad the Scimitar was a “black book” program.

@@OCDustin Yep but again Sovereign class battleship was also designed likely DURING the war as a counter to the BIG Battleships and Dreadnoughts.
Ships that came out at that time were...
Wait... Defiant, Steamrunner and such all appeared during the war... were pure warships but were not designed to fight the dominion, they were designed to fight the borg. This was actually the borg fleet.
The romulans suffered losses to the borg too... picture if that ship was ment to wipe out borg planets.
@@OCDustin well if your going off the movie technically it didn't lose. Shinzon only lost because he was trying to preserve Picard so he could save his own life. Otherwise the enterprise e would've been space dust. And just going off the statistics of overwhelming firepower the E was horribly mismatched against this ship. Three warbirds and a sovereign couldn't stop this thing if you want to get literal.
@jenniferstewarts4851 very circumstantial the scemitar being definitive in taking out a dominion class battleship I am not so sure it'd be that simple. Honestly I feel either side would probably not be in good shape afterwards so to me I could lean towards it being closer to a draw.

Although by default by the Dominion falling back the Romulans achieved victory, it was a bitter pyric victory at best. Also that the Dominion did not lose even a single battleship displays the power those vessels prowess. While D'deridex warbirds are close in size, their strength is hollow (both physically & metaphorically) in comparison. There is also the conveying of how compared to the blitzkrieging of the early-Dominion War, the mid-Dominion War is much more static akin to 1st great world war. Thrilling video to watch.

1.) The Valdore-type is a post Dominion War ship.
2.) The Sovereign, Galaxy, Nebula, Negh'Var, D'deridex, Scimitar, Hutet, and Dominion Battleship/Dreadnought, are all Dominion War era classes that either are on par or superior to the Valdore-type.
Cardassian: We built this massive ship that can destroy any ship! We called it the Hutet
Vorta: It doesn't fit in our war doctrine. We'll halt construction after the Obrek is built.

This video made me realize that what Garak did in Pale Moonlight by triking the Romulans to join the fight had a bigger impact than I first thought .... The Romulans alone had proven to give the Dominion more headache than the Federacion and Klingons combined ...
Dominion was prepered fo FED and Klingons but suprise attack of massive fleet alway gonna rusulting in push back defenders. But its look like Dominium had enough reserves to hold that front for a while. They basicly had too all out withdraw after Breen wepons become ussles and puting down Damar Rebelion. Dominium was much stronger or Romulans so weaker then apear that they offensive not ending up in total colaps of Dominium line and forcing them to mount defence where was mounted after mounts of engaments.
Heavy, brutal battle. From a purely tonnage perspective one might call the losses relatively 'even'; fifteen Jem Hadar Battlecruisers, tons and tons of fighters, a third of their cargo ships.. The Romulans losing nine of thier own battleships.
From a pure tonnage perspective, one could call this a draw. The Romulans in turn taking a strategically located system that could be used for followup operations makes it at least a partial strategic victory despite losses.
Bot the Romulan Navy is likely the smallest of the major combatants, warp transit is multiple months from Romulan space to Dominion territory, and they don't seem to have the capacity to build new ships as quickly as the other powers do. This is a bloody nose to them. The breaking of thier will to fight.. Well, that's what the Dominion wanted. They seem to have gotten it.
But from a pure strategic standpoint, this stands as a victory for the Romulans. They have a staging base near the enemy that can be built up for future offensive operations and is a good point that the Coalition can use to flank Dominion territory and press in from another direction. So they accomplished the mission.
Presuming that in the war they can take another such victory..
A pyyrhic victory.
But a victory none the less.
Cadets wanted to be heroes when the responsible thing to do was tell Starfleet Command.
neither side is willing to risk their expensive dreadnoughts, Romulan mistakes led to several devastating losses while Dominion ships are able to limp back to port. Committing your heavy hitters to an engagement is risky and neither side is willing to take the losses from the battle that would ensue. The romulans D'deridex suffers from its size more than its contemporaries because the star empire has less frigates and fighters to commit to escort duty. The Dominion had endless swarms of fighters to each battlecruiser while the Romulans can throw only 4 to each battleship, without a proper escort they're left vulnerable and can more easily be picked off. The romulans unwillingness to sacrifice ships as well where their opponent are willing to take losses is their bane, they are always outnumbered and unwilling to lose any ships.
Yeah the romulans are probably the most casualty averse combatants. And that will go on to influence their actions later in the war.
Would be the same old Capital ship curse, too costly in people and resources to lose and too much morale damage for your forces but a boost in the enemies moral. So they end up doing things of least import or just hidden away, till some desperate last offensive or be there for the final battles near a victory.
The Romulans just needed to design a ship that fills a role close to that of brell class bird of prey. The Klingon Brell at a bare minimum could be run by crew of at least a dozen or so. Yet the ship itself is large and consideredbly more powerful then it looks. The Brell could on it's own old off several dominon bug ships if the captain was skilled enough. The Romulans never mass produced a ship that was even close to this before or after the war but this is exactly what they needed. The Valdore came close but was too big and bulky to able to fill that role.
@@Tuberuser187 That's more the meme version of capital ship history rather than it always being reality. Historically speaking, only some nations where extremely hesitant about deploying their capital ships, but that's almost always because they where the inferior combatant. So what it really is is the curse of being the weaker power. For example, Nazi Germany, only ever had three battleships in commission at any one time. The Royal Navy on the other hand, had something around twenty. And it showed as the Royal navy was far more willing to use its capital ships offensively, like when it sent HMS Warspite up a Norwegian Fjord to go kill a large number of German Destroyers. Likewise the USN was far less hesitant with its own battleship deployments. The USN often would stick its battleships in front of its carriers and use the absolutely hilarious number of AA guns on the battleship to defend the carriers from airstrikes.
This also applies to USN vs IJN in the pacific. the IJN was the far weaker opponent, as such they where far more hesitant to deploy their battleships, as they had far fewer. the Pacific theater also required very fast capital ships too. As such the US Standards as well as four IJN Battleships where not very useful for major fleet actions because they where too slow. The USN also couldn't deploy many battleship in the early stages of the pacific war due to a lack of enough fast fleet oiler's to keep them supplied.
Of course logistics itself is an unmerciful thing too. Back during the ww2 period, the major source of oil in the world was the US, which supplied the vast majority of the worlds oil at the time. The Axis powers on the other hand had no access to any of the worlds oil reserves, and had to resort to trying to take it from the Soviets and the Dutch. But for a warship of the time to have the necessary engine power,r they needed to be oil fired, not coal fired. unfortunately, its difficult to deploy a battleship when you dont have the fuel available to run it.
The same effect happened in WW1. Germany was the weaker naval power. They had to be cautious with their fleet deployments when the Royal navy outnumbered them two to one.
@@ryuukeisscifiproductions1818 The ships of the Royal Navy and US Navy were not considered "wonder weapons" or super ships like the German and Japanese ones, maybe its a case of propaganda hampering things. Military and politics will always go hand in hand, if you make out to your forces and citizens you have a super ship that can win the war you stand a lot to lose if it sinks.
So its very much reality, not a meme.
Probably the one true conventional Star Trek ship that could rival and probably comfortably threaten a Imperial Star Destroyer.

I see where you are going and one would think that, but star trek and star wars "power levels" are so incredibly loopsided, most ship in the star trek universe would comfortably take down star destroyers with relative ease (not considering the EW capabilities of the star destroyers..)
But the yields of photon torpedoes are simply mind boggling (counted in hundreds of gigatons) while f.x the orbital bombardment doctrine of base delta zero in the star wars universe is only a few megatons of "yield" essentially large yield photon torpedoes are almost death star level threat...
This is not to attack the star wars universe, by no means.
Its just the power balance of the star trek universe is completely bonkers
@@splenditsanguinor Star Trek ships have always had this extreme power level issues. On screen this has always seemed to contradict when they were in combat. Take for example the Breen when they attacked Earth in the Dominion War and they did have several ships for the job. They must have fired torpedoes and energy weapons on the same power levels of federation tech and they only managed to destroy sections of San Fransisco but the city was still there.
Yet we know in Discovery that Photon Torpedoes of the TOS era can literally tear apart the surface of a world that could make a Imperium Vessel of 40K chuckle..
Star Wars ships always had similar issues and at most ground weapons at least have stayed somewhat consistent but the larger starships has yes been over the page to. Although to be fair the technology they have is vastly different and almost none of the weapons they use is really energy weapons in a real sense. We know that a Star Destroyer by itself in 24 hours can slag a world and a small fleet can slag one in a few hours.
Your right however its a damn mess.
Technically nothing Star Trek Fed ships have should be able to reach the powerlevels in firepower your saying just due to the fact if that was true than a lucky hit in space should vaporise any ship they hit.
Yet we see ships get hit, damaged and yes blow up from volleys. We've seen larger ships tank torpedoes, and in some cases same torpedoes are so inferior the federation had to create new ones.
Makes you think about what the Borg and god knows what the Voth are packing.
@Thorsteinn Allansson depends on the lore. A star destroyer has the energy output to entirely melt the crust of an earth sized planet in 12 hours. Yet it simultaneously can't survive more than a few dozen or few hundred shots from similar capital class weapons. So weapon energy output is far far higher than defensive. And depending on what comic you look at, they magically just die for no reason to a poke. Power scaling is incredibly hard to calculate between the two universes. I don't understand why people take the highest estimates for star trek, and then use the lowest, most random estimates for star wars. Much of it has to be down purely to the dressing up of star treks technobabble as scientific.
Watching these videos on the Romulan centric battles in the war shines a light as to why such designs as the Valdore type (Mogai in side canon) and the Scimitar were made.

In actuality it would most likely turn into the same situation that followed the creation of the first Dreadnaught class ship by the British prior to World War One. The class is named after her - _HMS Dreadnought_ and was descriptive, that it was a ship so powerful, so heavily armed and armoured, that it would "dread nought", i.e. fear nothing. It quickly turned into an arms race as each nation sought to gain superiority by having the largest number of dreadnaughts (because, ironically enough, the one thing a dreadnaught did fear was another dreadnaught). The ships became steadily bigger and more powerful as the race extended. However, during actual conflict, it became quickly evident that dreadnaughts were so costly and time consuming to build, that no one dared actually commit them for fea rof losing them. They also became vulnerable to the new weapon, the submarine launched torpedo. Although the Dominion can very rapidly replace personnel, the ship itself represents a vast expenditure of resources, which could all be lost if the battleship is destroyed. The obvious counter to the Dominion battleship would be to create a fast, very heavily shielded kamikaze ship, either computer controlled or even manned (I would guess that the Klingons at least would have no problem in going to a glorious death taking down one of these monsters). Indeed, it is quite likely that the Klingons and Romulans at least - if not the squeamish Federation - woudl adopt a standard tactic of ramming. It it alsonotable that _real_ neutronium weighs 10 to the 18th kilos per cubic meter (that's a million billion tonnes!). So either the armour was incredibly thin or when Trek talks about "Neutronium" it means something else. In the final episode Kira and Dukat note that the Dominion HQ is protected by a door made of neutronium. Not only is neutronium a liquid, a door made of it would instantly sink to the core of the planet under it's own immense weight.
The Federation's new Sovereign class ships would be perfect for this role, though at war's end there were too few of them to be everywhere they were needed....the perfect counter to dreadnought-sized battleships

Ah, a homage to Pyrrhus of Epirus, nice.
So in this brilliant and fabulous star trek's reimaging of the battle of Jutland, the dominion, proves to the Romulans without a shadow of a doubt, that it is still a dangerous and deadly beast capable of inflicting tremendous damage on them and biting where it hurts, showing that after their initial run of victories that the Romulan's aren't going to have things all their own way. As the debut of the dominion's new heavy battleship and massive armament presents it enemy's with a massive new tactical problem to surmount without massive cost to them in the process, leading to a pyrrhic victory for the Romulans' as the dominion's slow down their advance..
This battle is a prime example of the Romulans not playing to their strengths. Romulans are at their best when they are hitting their enemy from the shadows and fading away, keeping their enemies looking one direction while another Romulan sneaks up to shank them from behind. Here, they tried to fight a stand-up slugging match, a fight that they are entirely ill-equipped for.
I had the same thought. The d'deridex is much like a huge submarine with unlimited fuel. Attacking a heavily defended position seems stupid. Instead, strike convoys, shipyards, industrial/production centers, and targets of opportunity.

As powerful as the D'Deridex is, its main weapon, as with all cloak capable ships, is surprise. They could not achieve that with sufficient effect in this battle. Klingons seemed to more effectively use their cloaking devices throughout the war to great effect. Of course the Klingons are less arrogant and are more willing to take risks.
Yeah the klingons were faster so could more easily escape from a bad situation.

Scimitar is more maneuverable then the Dominion Battleship, and just as heavily armed so I'd say it takes the win 1 on 1
considering how insanely OP the Scimitar is? able to fire through its cloak which has no vulnerablity to Anti-Poleron scans and with its shields up to boot. and that is the version without the Death Star feature.
Adding a Scimitar into the mix would’ve been epic.

The dominion Battleship is clearly designed for this kind of fight, to slug it out with multiple warbirds. Meanwhile, a D'dex is essentially more of a mobile strategic hub that supports the larger fleet, its more aircraft carrier or starbase with warp nacelles and far less a Battleship (rather like a Cylon basestar really!). and the Romulans are fighting the worst kind of battle here. Their enemy knows they are coming, has a defence in depth, can afford to lose huge numbers of mostly expendable attack ships and Jem'Hadar and has completely stripped the Romulan of their vital Stealth Alpha Strike tactics. Edit: even worse the Romulans have to dislodge them from that base before they destroy it so now it's a race against time as well. ANd the Jem'hadar being totally expendable are perfect for leaving behind as suicide troops just to make the cost in blood and treasure as high as possible.
This convinces the Romulan Leadership later on to build the Kerchans.

Please consider adding a video or segment regarding the dominion sensor array hidden in the Argolis cluster. DS9 episode “Behind the Lines”. It’s destruction by the defiant would seem to have been a pivotal moment during the early to middle stages of the war.

I love the Romulans, throwing a hissy fit because their victories aren't quite as easy as they hoped they would be. This does beg the question, when was the first destruction of a Jem'hadar Battleship? The Klingons would certainly want to have a crack at it
I always saw these ships as star treks equivalent to the star destroyer. Quite similar in armament and appearance, it even has that command tower like structure on top.

These are great. I hope you decide to do some Battlespace on some of the episodes of Babylon 5 that have quite worthy battles in them as well.
This is the great fault of the Romulan fleet doctrine: if they lose the warbirds, then game's over. Say what you will about Starfleet and the KDF, but the Mirandas and Vorchas have greater flexibility and won't cripple you if you lose even a good number of them.
On a side note, how about a short vid suggestion: the last stand of Kor, the Dahar master.

I don’t recall seeing any of these menacing battleships cutting thru enemy ships like a hot knife thru butter.
They were depicted in ds9 battles but weren’t blasting ships out of space with a single shot as described
Here’s a thought, if the weapon Hz in ST matches the shields the weapons can pass through right? So why not scan the phaser beam Hz to get the shield Hz? Oh wait I just thought there I think they rotate it. Oh well I’ll leave this up so it can answer someone else’s question that thinks that.

At roughly 45 degrees of its rear hind quarters about the 4 and 8 o’clock position it’s highly vulnerable actually due to a blind spot from phasers and torpedos and just so happens that’s where it’s armour is at its weakest according to your colour chart of armament and armour. A small ship could match its vector and do loop the loop all day firing at it and it wouldn’t be able to do a thing.

The dominion battleships construction was rushed because of the romulans joining the war but its design had nothing to do with the romulan d deridex it was more likely designed in response to the need for planetary assault because the gamma quadrant was conquered so there were occupation forces mostly the alpha quadrant dominion forces needed to reach and subdue planets so they built the battleships they planned to.
