That final tip, helping your fellow spy, is something me and my buddies do all the time and on purpose. We call it a Spy Sandwich, or "Sandwiching." For decent spies, it's nearly always effective on lone targets.
As a heavy main, it’s always a weird mix of nice and horrifying to see a video about spy be so well put together. Guess that’s why I run tomislav, so much easier to hear the sneaky Frenchman without all that rattling.
As an experienced Heavy main, I can confirm we get backstabbed so often we end up subconsciously learning how to think like both spy and sniper. We get hit with sudden, overwhelming premonitions when we're about to be stabbed or shot just by reading the game. People like to say Heavy has a low skill-ceiling, but he MORE then makes up for it with his ridiculously high game-sense ceiling.
Sometimes a heavy turns around at the most inconvenient time and kills me, and when that happens I’m not even mad, since that was a display of skill by the heavy. He read my mind before knowing I even exist and I can respect that. I can tell they’re a heavy main. But I’ve also learned how to counter these guys. Basically, when you have the most perfect opportunity to backstab them, you don’t take it, you wait for them to spy check, and when they turn back around again you have a window of about 2 seconds where you can stab them. You just need to prepare for that tiny window and be generally unpredictable.

Most non spy players think its just pyros, but they don't understand the absolute crushing pain of seeing an opportunity for a massive chainstab and then having your backstab become a failstab as the entire enemy team turns around to kill you.
hehe time to kill the whole enemy team *medic turns 0.1 degrees as i stab him, removing my disguise and getting me obliterated by the 922 level 3 sentries* *i have been dominated by the engineer*
There's another reason it's called a butterknife to hit someone like that: Spy's knife is called a ButterFLY knife, take away the fly and it's just a butterknife. It's almost like a play on words, though I doubt it was intended to be whenever the terminology was invented.
Personally I always thought it's because the horizontal slash resulting from a normal spy melee attack (like a failstab) kind of ressembles extending butter over a slice of bread or something to that effect.
"Remeber success isn't guaranteed, and failure isn't inherently bad. You learn more from failing than you do from succeeding, the difference being dopamine." is a fuckin banger of a quote my man

You dont. Just pray the enemy is stupid or running out of ammo so they cant afford to spy check. I guess itll work in combat if you dont bumb into anyone
That's just the design of spy, if people are cautious and coordinated spy gameplay is very difficult. If a pyro is doing nothing but spraying every half-inch of walkable ground with fire every half-second, if you get caught and focused down you have no option but to either be perfect at escaping, or perfect at killing, or just die. I don't think you'll find a pyro with that mindset anytime soon (maybe me if you find me in casual, or pyros in HL) but spychecking is the main counter to spy, there's no real avoiding it.

You know, as a person who doesn't play spy (I mean that, I have no idea how) I want to say that this has definitely helped me understand how spy players do what they do, and how I should play around that.
I've been playing alot of spy recently, and you covered alot, from the basics to the more meta game stuff where you are in people's heads. I have a few thousand hours and spy is somewhere in the middle in terms of hours played. So there's more stabbing to be had.. I also think that spy hones my game sense and joking abilities better than any other class. Happy stabbing, and great video :)
Excellent! The exceeding amount of work absolutely shows and it is very, very greatly appretiated. It always makes my day when I watch a video of such great quality with so much effort put into it. Were there any severe difficulties you faced during production?
17:21 I love being the second spy in that scenario so much because I know how it feels to be the guy who found the first spy The feeling of being backstabbed when you are staring right at the only enemy spy you THOUGHT was there is so heartbreaking and I live for it
The classes having different hotboxes is right, but every class has the same bounding box, which is what is used for melee weapon hits and bumping. So the tip at 13:20 is wrong
Your channel is criminally underrated. The production quality rivals the biggest names of TFTubers and the knowledge presented is both incredibly useful to newbies in explaining the basic concepts of backstabs and a tool for those dedicating themselves to improving as spy to understand the more intrinsic aspects of a backstab. I hope you get the recognition that you very much deserve.
It's almost unreasonable to expect someone make a video about a class in a game that existed for over 13 years now and you get this much appreciation for it via like ratio. All I can say is, it feels great seeing the most creative (or just simply not lazy) members of the community filling it with new content. Spy's also my guilty pleasure and I always enjoy additional insight into mastering that frenchman. Great video
3:17 That's weird, seeing a reference to a bad, german porn in the TF2 chat of a content creator that does englich-voiced content...strange times indeed. Aside from that, your narrations are always nice to listen to, so count me entertained.
THANK YOU so much for for making this video. It's so relatable doing a failstab or happening a butterknife moment and you think "why this happens to me?". We think of that because 99% of TF2 TH-camrs always describe spy as an "untouched god who can kill everyone easily".
A friend who I've recently gotten into TF2 is an up and coming spy main. I recommended your videos to him, and I think it's helped him gain some game sense
Dude, this video was probably the the best knowlege increase I’ve ever had on tf2, I played spy after watching your videos, and I’m finally getting a few stabs now I know how to ACTUALLY USE DISGUISES and get away with them
If I may be honest, I don’t play TF2, however the videos that you make are really informative and very well constructed. The fact that you do everything yourself and it’s got this high level of polish to it is not only commendable, but exemplary. I hope that your channel grows exponentially.
I was taking a drink when this video started playing and the intro's sudden pickup in sound made me almost choke to death on it. 10/10 would let that happen again
I should probably add that when hiding in a checked corner don't hide in the first corner they check. Good players will double back and check the first corner in case you moved
1:42 Wait, does that mean that The Knife has a mind of it's own ? Where it can detect invisible enemy spies and can tell it's master to ready up for the good old backstab. Like a metal detector ???
you got 1 thing wrong in the video about the heavy having the largest hitbox which is true with bullets but with collision hulls (the thing that registers backstabs) is the same size for every class other than that this video was perfection I've been waiting to see something like this for a while good job hint you did great man :) good luck in your next video idea man 8)

It’s always nice to see ur videos every once in a while, there’s always a unique style to ur edits and asmr-esque voice
hee hee funny frenchman who gave him a knife
i decided to rewatch this video, the amount of quality and polish that this video has is astounding, i also really enjoyed the soundtrack, nice job.
17:21 I love being the second spy in that scenario so much because I know how it feels to be the guy who found the first spy
The feeling of being backstabbed when you are staring right at the only enemy spy you THOUGHT was there is so heartbreaking and I live for it
We have been tricked, we have been backstabbed, and quite possibly, BAMBOOZLED
Second spy, is the worst idea ever.
This is maybe the detailed and most well explained advice ive seen for spy so far
This has helped me out immensely
Wait is there music from Tron in your intro
YES DAFT PUNK MUSIC IS GOD
@@aadishankar575 Hell yeah
The classes having different hotboxes is right, but every class has the same bounding box, which is what is used for melee weapon hits and bumping. So the tip at 13:20 is wrong
3:12 "because I know there's a spy and I need to stay vigilante" is what I would say if I were that soldier turning around then
Exactly 2 years later this video is still a masterpiece
As a pyro main, I can confirm that the revolver is an amazing deterrent.
Cringe pyro
I agree, as a Pyro and Medic main
Your channel is criminally underrated. The production quality rivals the biggest names of TFTubers and the knowledge presented is both incredibly useful to newbies in explaining the basic concepts of backstabs and a tool for those dedicating themselves to improving as spy to understand the more intrinsic aspects of a backstab. I hope you get the recognition that you very much deserve.
As someone who isn't a spy I can easily explain why we randomly turn around
It's to not get stabbed by you sneaky motherfu-
It's almost unreasonable to expect someone make a video about a class in a game that existed for over 13 years now and you get this much appreciation for it via like ratio. All I can say is, it feels great seeing the most creative (or just simply not lazy) members of the community filling it with new content. Spy's also my guilty pleasure and I always enjoy additional insight into mastering that frenchman. Great video
Me a Pyro main watching this video
"Know your enemy and know yourself"
-Sun Tzu
As soon as you started talking about using knockback for stairstabs, my WHOLE COMPUTER BLUE SCREENED.
Clearly spy is the strongest class.
3:17 That's weird, seeing a reference to a bad, german porn in the TF2 chat of a content creator that does englich-voiced content...strange times indeed.
Aside from that, your narrations are always nice to listen to, so count me entertained.
I subscribed. Absolutely fantastic content, it's a crime that you don't have more subs.
First
god damn it
THANK YOU so much for for making this video. It's so relatable doing a failstab or happening a butterknife moment and you think "why this happens to me?". We think of that because 99% of TF2 TH-camrs always describe spy as an "untouched god who can kill everyone easily".
To the point, clear as day, a very nice voice and even humour. Very well done.
as a spy main i approve of 100% of this video, nice job
some of the most informative and useful videos from this guy. some of the most quality as well
A friend who I've recently gotten into TF2 is an up and coming spy main. I recommended your videos to him, and I think it's helped him gain some game sense
Tron music in the beginning, immediately subbed
The thumbnail is biblically accurate spy
As a pyro main this video is very informative and it'll make it easier to torment any enemy spies. Thanks!
Holy shit dude that intro was amazing really good job
Finally I watch this. Good vid mate! I hope to see more stuff like this in the future!
I’ve got to be honest this is actually helping me
Dude, this video was probably the the best knowlege increase I’ve ever had on tf2, I played spy after watching your videos, and I’m finally getting a few stabs now I know how to ACTUALLY USE DISGUISES and get away with them
you are absolutely right, the dopamine surge when doing a backstap is amazing, good video:)
If I may be honest, I don’t play TF2, however the videos that you make are really informative and very well constructed. The fact that you do everything yourself and it’s got this high level of polish to it is not only commendable, but exemplary. I hope that your channel grows exponentially.
This is a really good video! Super high quality, love it man!
I was taking a drink when this video started playing and the intro's sudden pickup in sound made me almost choke to death on it. 10/10 would let that happen again
Ive been waiting for so long for spytalk
Best spy video that i ever watched...makes me want to play spy more!! So many tricks unraveled in such exquisite ways!
I should probably add that when hiding in a checked corner don't hide in the first corner they check. Good players will double back and check the first corner in case you moved
That intro with TRON : Legacy's melody was a train of nostalgia, nice detail even if it has nothing to do with TF2
As someone who's been trying to get into playing spy more this is going to help me so much thank you
I just want to say that love the visual part of the video and the preview is so great it deserves to be a poster
This was very useful to me as i'm a new player to tf2 and a spy main. Appreciate it!
7:17 best description of matador. Thank you
Props! I like how smug your spy was at the end :)
1:42
Wait, does that mean that The Knife has a mind of it's own ? Where it can detect invisible enemy spies and can tell it's master to ready up for the good old backstab. Like a metal detector ???
you got 1 thing wrong in the video about the heavy having the largest hitbox
which is true with bullets
but with collision hulls (the thing that registers backstabs) is the same size for every class
other than that this video was perfection
I've been waiting to see something like this for a while
good job hint
you did great man :)
good luck in your next video idea man 8)
