I bought Dream Theater's Live Scenes From New York (along with Slayer's God Hates Us All) on the morning of it's release, just an hour before the planes hit the Towers. I still own that original cover and will never part with it. I remember not too long after the album was pulled, copies of it began circulating on eBay. Probably one of the most dubious collector's items ever.
The person who said never judge a book by its cover probably never saw these album covers. Also Simple Plan third album's rejected cover was also cool and I have one idea why they changed it.
One big one from way back was the Blind Faith album featuring Eric Clapton, Steve Windwood, and Ginger Baker. The original featured a topless teen girl holding a silver phalic shaped airplane that looked a lot like something she would have discovered in her mother's bedstand
F**k TH-cam, I didn't know you uploaded a video a month ago .-. I even have the freaking bell activated I'm sorry, but here we are now. Really good video, as always God bless and happy new year!
In 2009, Kraftwerk re-released everything originally released between 1974 and 2003 (namely _Autobahn, Radio-Aktivität, Trans-Europa Express, Die Mensch-Maschine, Computerwelt, Electric Café, The Mix,_ and _Tour de France Soundtracks_ ), and the majority of them were given new artwork, with 2 of them even getting new(ish) titles. The only covers that were left the same were _Computerwelt_ and _Electric Café,_ though the latter was renamed _Techno-Pop,_ which, interestingly, was its original working title during recording. The other retitled album was _Tour de France Soundtracks,_ being renamed simply _Tour de France._
Yeah I was one of those people waiting for Virgin Killer to be brought up here but subverting expectations and not talking about it is something I don’t blame ya for doing. I just see that scene from Spinal Tap in my head when they’re talking about Smell The Glove (another candidate for this list even if it was a fictional album) whether it’s sexy or sexist except it devolving into a much more ridiculous conversation about what is art and what is porn. Now my favorite album cover change comes from my favorite band Type O Negative and their album The Origin of the Feces. Which for those who don’t know the original cover was Pete Steele holding his ass cheeks and showing us the origin of his feces. It was changed two years later to a much more boring and less hilarious album cover. Adding to the joke is that this album was a fake live album in which the band plays a set for a few of their friends in the studio while being heckled. This only cemented a tradition at their live shows for the crowd to chant “you suck!” as they’re about to go on stage with the crowd being further antagonized with horrible circus music being played on loop for the 30 or so minutes leading up their set. Also jet fuel can’t melt Dream Theater.
LMAO! I'll have to do that Type O Negative one if I ever make a sequel to this. It sounds pretty funny, although censoring it for the video will be very difficult, haha. And _Smell the Glove_ is always a classic example. Thanks for commenting!
Scottish Punk Rock band The Skids released their 2nd Album Days in Europa in 1979 and the cover featured a 1936 style Germany Olympic Games male and female athletes with Germanic gothic lettering , the following year the album cover was changed .
I just looked it up. That's a great example! Also a humorous subversion as the original cover art was still technically featured as part of the new art.
@@THSReviews Yes it's funny the original artwork can be seen in background in a small framed picture on the wall 😂 Also now you can buy the remastered anniversary album in its original sleeve , coloured vinyl, I think the fans prefer the original sleeve.
Besides Dream Theater the mother of all coincidences has to be the original cover art for the album party music by The Coup. That album was supposed to release in September but was delayed to November but considering that music came out back in those days on Tuesdays and 9/11 was a Tuesday there's a good possibility that album could have came out on 9/11. Also the Sega Dreamcast game propeller Arena which takes place in the future of 2045 but people are using World War II fighter planes as sporting events in New York city. It was supposed to release September 19th 2001 even though it was already finished the game was canceled and never has been officially released but the ROM of the game has leaked. Also it was a first party Sega game for the Dreamcast that came out months after they already announced that they were leaving the hardware business so Sega wasted a bunch of time and money and considering this is the Dreamcast we're talking about money they didn't have.
Good examples! I've seen the _Party Music_ cover, and it's honestly eerie how close it is. Yeah, it's rather surprising just how many unfortunate coincidences were timed _right_ around 9/11, eh?
I have one of the Beatles vinyls with the sticker of the new cover stuck over the original that my parents would’ve bought back when it came out. I wonder if it’s worth anything
I still own the original Dream Theater cover, and I didn't get it the day it came out. I bought mine on holiday - new - from a small record shop in Gibraltar, the British colony on the southern tip of Spain. Guess they just forgot to send it back! Lucky old me! The shop's still there, but doesn't sell CDs any more...
The thing is, too, knowing that it's a proof-of-concept sketch makes it a little more understandable? As an artist, I understand that the initial sketches and versions of something can look very rough, because you don't want to put all your effort into a piece before the person you're drawing it for approves it, because then you'd have to start it over again. The question is why the label thought that version was at all okay to release as the final cover. Woof.
Well... I still wanted to keep the monetization on this video, plus I feel pretty icky that I even _saw_ that cover to begin with. So I think the way I addressed that album is the best way I could have done it.
Good example! I believe that would fall under the same principle as _Virgin Killer,_ in that it would be very difficult to talk about, but it definitely works as an example of what I'm talking about.
Yeah, about that... I moved out of my old apartment, but I kinda liked the reverb-y sound I got in the voiceovers there (not so much in the in-camera audio), like a little bit of that reverb to make my voice sound better, so I tried a bit of that in this video. I may have admittedly gone a bit overboard with it, haha. Won't happen again!
Shout at the devil got changed pretty much immediately. The original black pentagram is awesome
Ooh, great example! I'm surprised I forgot about that one, since I own that album.
Live Scenes From New York’s Album Cover is the textbook example of “That One Didn’t Age Quite So Well.”
On the _day_ it was released, at that, yeah.
Thanks for watching!

It’s cool to hear you talk about AnCo! I totally agree with your take on that album cover, and I’m glad they changed it!

Ah, good catch! I think that qualifies under the "different album covers in different countries" part that I listed at the beginning.

That's awesome! Man, you're owning a rare piece of history right there.
Less interesting stories: Diamond Dogs, Electric Ladyland, Is This It, Beggar's Banquet, Relics
Maybe you could do censored music videos next.

Looks more like an AI concoction to me, TBH
@@theuncannydag LMAO, YOU'RE NOT WRONG! It's like an AI looked at the final _Burn This Town_ cover and attempted to reconstruct it in anime style.
