Well, one of the fallen soldiers of the paratrooper brigade that defended the bridge, (surrounded by Germans and without ammunition), until the arrival of the land army, had this phrase engraved on his headstone: "Go tell the spartans that we lie here obeying their words". The boy was 22 years old when he died. It's food for thought ...

At the Battle of Plates, Dilios DID redeem himself and earned him a proper Spartan burial and headstone (only reserved for honorably serving soldiers and mothers who died in childbirth. But, Dilios was conveyed NO honors from the battle due to him being shunned. That and he also charged into battle like a berserker and did not stay with his unit. As Spartan and Agoge tradition teach teamwork and fighting for the man beside you. Dilios had no official order from Leonidis I to return and that is why he was labeled a deserter. A fate worse than death for a Spartan Warrior.

People can argue about history and spartans all day long but you have to admit, these men probably knew they were going to die… and they didn’t care. The greatest defeat in history, the Greeks lost this battle (epically) but they won the war.
I think that line of reasoning is one of the strangest criticisms of a movie ever. A movie that’s explicitly a shot for shot translation of a comic book isn’t historically accurate. Who would’ve thought!
The whole film is Dilios' battle cry. That's the way to view it. He's getting the Greeks pumped up, telling them how grotesque the Persians are, that they're uncivilised barbarian monsters, that they have no honour, they're cowards, so far beneath the Spartans and other Greeks that the Greeks need not fear them, that an army of Greeks will erase this 'filth' from the face of the earth. That's all this film is.
Just got back from a study abroad in Greece and actually had the opportunity to visit the site where those 300 Spartans were buried. Written in ancient Greek, the tombstone roughly translates to "O stranger, tell the Spartans that here we lie, obedient to their laws.” In other words, they followed their Spartan code to the very end, never surrendering, and never retreating.

Aristodemus (man Dilios is based of) was ordered to return to Sparta because of an infection in his eye, not a combat wound. Let's just say Spartans didn't take it well, he was basically shunned, "Aristodemus the Coward". In battle of Plataea, Aristodemus fought like an absolute madman, slaying countless Persians before he fell. He redeemed himself but received no special honor, because of his suicide-like berserker charge and breaking the formation

I remember being 17 and watching a pirated version of this in 1080HD well before it reached the cinemas. Was such a great movie and haven’t seen a masterpiece like this ever again.
Twas pathetic BS back then, tis still pathetic BS today. Leonidas could have easily retreated when he realised that Persian troops were beginning to march towards that mountain path. He would have saved his valuable warriors, who were an elite force and wouldn't have lost anything, not even his honour. In fact it was much harder for Sparta to lose 300 experienced elite warriors than a tactical retreat from a hopeless position could ever have been.

I guess no one will ever know but I guess he lived out his days until this battle being shamed by all of Sparta and Greece for not dying with the others even tho his king sent him away bc of his eye wound and to warn the others . I'm a big fan of the movie, but it did over dramatize the battle of Thermopylae. The 5 thousand plus Greeks aiding in the battle were paramount. Also what Themistocles did during the battle of Salamis might be one of the most impressive Greek victories during this era. However it was all for nought after the Persians won at Thermopylae.

The thing about this film being over dramatised is that it's not meant to be an actual account of what happened, it's the story as the Greeks would have told it. Obviously the Persians didn't have Giant Golems, Xerxes wasn't a massive god and there were no Goat ladies in his camp, but that's how the story was told long ago and how the movie was made, and when you watch it with the knowledge that it's a myth it becomes an even better movie in my opinion

Just imagine this... an enemy has invaded your land and you must fight back. The enemy is huge, but lacks the training you have, which is beyond levels of extremes most regular people can comprehend. You send a small party commanded by your king to hold off the invaders and fight them to the death, losing everybody but still dealing a devastating blow. It's a year later and the enemy outnumbers you by somewhere between 3:1 or maybe even at 1:1. Your training makes this almost the easiest victory you can imagine. In a way you almost feel sorry for the enemy, but only for a moment - after all, they're invading your land and not the other way around so all bets are off. It's go time.

Hmmm I don’t think you can compare! This scene is more emotional by nature of the movie’s conclusion; the sacrifice of Leonidas and the brave 300. Ride of the Rohirrim however occurs 3/4 into the movie with still plenty to explore in the story.

Twas pathetic BS back then, tis still pathetic BS today. Leonidas could have easily retreated when he realised that Persian troops were beginning to march towards that mountain path. He would have saved his valuable warriors, who were an elite force and wouldn't have lost anything, not even his honour. In fact it was much harder for Sparta to lose 300 experienced elite warriors than a tactical retreat from a hopeless position could ever have been.
@@EricMustardman Actually staying there and fight was a tactical move.He was trying to earn sometime for the Athenians to evacuate the city and later draw the Persians to fight in the sea (battle of Salamis).This move actually was the turning point for the Greco -Persian wars.

The fact 300 did what they did, the fear they brought to their enemy makes the ending scene that much more powerful. 300 did that, and when you see the sea of xerxes army waiting, 1,000,000+ soldiers waiting, to thousands of Spartans, reminding the soldiers what leonidus and his 300 did, and how the enemy outnumbered the Spartans 3 to one. Yea in whole Europe history there were just few times where single country saved wholu Europe, I know only of 3 times like this, the great greek war showcased here, then the Polish osman war wich stoped huge army and essentially fucked osmans quite hard helping the Europe as most countries at the time were kindof losing vs them, had too small armies, or were ready to become one of them, and then just after 1st ww the polish-comunist war where the newly formed ZSRR decided that well getmans kindof like their idea, same as france, so they could ,, librarate Europe with their help'' yea nedless to say even tho they outnumbered polish forces wuite havily they got kicked in the nuts as russians do, not sure if they ever won a war vs poland without germans help tbh, thats also why Russia has such a huge grudge on poland, as they always needed help to beat much weaker neighbor...

I guess no one will ever know but I guess he lived out his days until this battle being shamed by all of Sparta and Greece for not dying with the others even tho his king sent him away bc of his eye wound and to warn the others . Leonidas sent another solider away with him for whatever reasons but I guess that solider returned and died with the others .his honor was not restored until this final battle for him at plateau. It was said that he fought more fierce than any other that had ever been witnessed taking countless enemies with him to his death .even in his death tho they still could not let him be and they said that he did not fight like a true spartan that day bc he fought to reckless and suicidal.

Sadly Phelios last battle at Platea, earned him a Spartan burial (only warriors and women who died in childbirth even got a headstone) but was conveyed NO honors for his reckless abandon and charge. He did not stay and defend his brother, which is also Spartan law.

This is deep on so many levels. They decided where to fight, they decided to not back down, they decided where their fate would end. Modern military would've had resources to destroy a civilization such as this, but you wouldn't be able to scratch their pride.

You may think this was over dramatized, I’m sure the fighting was, the politics I guarantee was definitely under dramatized. To think this happened in real life and there were 300 men that just straight up went head on against impossible odds like this… just mind blowing.
I'm a big fan of the movie, but it did over dramatize the battle of Thermopylae. The 5 thousand plus Greeks aiding in the battle were paramount. Also what Themistocles did during the battle of Salamis might be one of the most impressive Greek victories during this era. However it was all for nought after the Persians won at Thermopylae.

We only get to see fractions of it portrayed, I can’t imagine what their actual discussions looked like entailing this event! @@Valeij221 I'm with you man... the portrayal of Spartans in 300 is as alpha as it gets. You should checkout the history channel documentary that came out a little after the movie. In the movie when Leonidas says our women could have won the battle, he wasn't lying.
The thing about this film being over dramatised is that it's not meant to be an actual account of what happened, it's the story as the Greeks would have told it. Obviously the Persians didn't have Giant Golems, Xerxes wasn't a massive god and there were no Goat ladies in his camp, but that's how the story was told long ago and how the movie was made, and when you watch it with the knowledge that it's a myth it becomes an even better movie in my opinion

This is a unique movie work. It is clear here the Greek pride and heroism of the Sparta soldiers. The heroic deed of soldiers and King Leonidas.
Just imagine this... an enemy has invaded your land and you must fight back. The enemy is huge, but lacks the training you have, which is beyond levels of extremes most regular people can comprehend. You send a small party commanded by your king to hold off the invaders and fight them to the death, losing everybody but still dealing a devastating blow. It's a year later and the enemy outnumbers you by somewhere between 3:1 or maybe even at 1:1. Your training makes this almost the easiest victory you can imagine. In a way you almost feel sorry for the enemy, but only for a moment - after all, they're invading your land and not the other way around so all bets are off. It's go time.
Now the same scenario is playing out in the Ukraine. Russia outnumbers Ukraine by a paltry 10 to one and Russia is getting it's ass kicked.

Hmmm I don’t think you can compare! This scene is more emotional by nature of the movie’s conclusion; the sacrifice of Leonidas and the brave 300. Ride of the Rohirrim however occurs 3/4 into the movie with still plenty to explore in the story.

One of those moments you’d want to go and see in history
Imagine having to go fight these Spartans in melee combat, knowing that they have trained their whole life for this, knowing that THEY KNOW they are going to die, knowing that they are not going to leave anything on the table. Absolutely terrifying.
