Steve Perry sounds as good, if not better, live then on the albums. He is just an amazing singer.

You need to catch them on Midnight Special in 78 doing Wheel.
I suggest you reverse the order doing the original first then live because you can hear how they changed it easier when they add stuff live IMO then hearing what they cut for the studio and the lyrics are clearer almost always on the original. I saw them live at the Rose Bowl headlined with Blue Oyster Cult, Triumph and Aldo Nova and Steve sounded just as good live.
you have to watch the Escpae tour Houston, all the songs are awesome. Steve is the best and the group's composition at the time couldn't be topped. Neal Schon underrated on the guitar, Jonathan Cean on the piano great but also the drums and bass perfect. Check out "Mother Fader" Live Houston, an orchestra couldn't produce a fuller sound, Steve just awesome...

Steve Perry... OMG... one of the best ever.... Do not mess with him... My very first concert out of the Delaware State Fair... Saw Journey in 1983.. the Escape Tour... Philly... 15 yrs old... Mom made me go with my older sisters bf... he was so responsible... he was 19 and he got thrown up on by the higher deck... lol... To me.. the live here sounds just like the recorded version

Sometimes bands need to speed a song up to keep the concert going and alive. Plus it gives the band a way to play their songs how they might have wanted it.
I’ve got one for ya. The Band: Great White. The song: Rock Me! ( the studio album version). Quite possibly one of the BEST bluesy rock songs. The build up is EVERYTHING

Back then all we had were live performances that were taped. Now the official videos of the older artists are usually one of those live performances that the studio or artists considers the best version of the actual studio recording. No sound stages and elaborate videos until MTV made an appearance in 1981. Now MTV is more reality shows than music videos.

I prefer the more rock songs over thier power ballads. But hey its win win

I definitely disagree. In most cases the studio version is better. Bands that sound the same better live are more of the exception.
