- Tinikling is said to have originated in the Leyte Island of the Philippines
during the time of Spanish colonization. There are two versions of how
Tinikling came to be. One of them says that farmers on the Leyte island
had traps for the island birds to protect their crops. These birds were
called ‘tikling’ birds, and the dance imitates the movement of these birds
as they avoided their traps. The other origin story is believed to have come
from the Spanish colonial era, when locals were ordered to work in large
plantations. To punish workers that weren’t doing their job, they were
positioned between bamboo sticks and these sticks were closed together. This dance’s distinguishing feature is its use of large bamboo sticks to keep time, while dancers weave through them and avoid the sticks as they close. This traditional folk dance is still widely performed, helping connect our past to the culture of today.
