The spirit of Roy Hargrove is alive and well in the trumpet solo! Wow!

And let's hear it for the way John Sturino kicks a great big band! Just incredible.

What a fantastic trumpet solo - blues drenched and a hint of Clark Terry, but definately his own man - very maturte sound

This is Grammy Material!! A control and power that one doesn't find in the collegiate ranks. This sounds truly professional.

Does the Grammy's have a college category? Otherwise, this is gonna cut it.

Sadly, the Grammy's do not have a college category. Winning a Grammy has been the "Holy Grail" of the One O'Clock for a VERY long time! They want to be the first college band to do so. This is the first tune I've heard from the One O'Clock that is much more than a really great (the greatest? )collegiate lab band/big band. Collegiate big bands are wonderful for their youthful energy; but, often sound like an in-tune marching band/drum & bugle corps. They often lack control and a breadth of style. Still, their energy can be infectious.

@@mtw2457 I don't think there is another big band anywhere that can match them. In Britain we have NYJO but I don't feel they have the individualism of these lads. This band is better than many of the "name" bands with a high degree of taste and talent.

@@alangiles2763 My metric is simple. If music induces positive emotions (excitement, peace, happiness, ...) then it is good. Unfortunately, academic analysis often induces strong negative emotions, and that is where most of the jazz in the United States has gone. I love this recording by a UK band (Louis Dowdeswell): th-cam.com/video/gXi5Od8vqgc/w-d-xo.html . I have strong hopes that the UK and Germany can combine classically trained skill with real jazz energy. Have heard some GREAT Don Ellis tributes by some German bands: th-cam.com/video/9englt5-ENE/w-d-xo.html

Awesome Japanese boy. He has a soul-filling sensibility. And the last high note shows that the high register is also good. A nice super trumpet player.

Came here from a Kenny G tune. Had to hear some real music. Thanks, now I don’t have to jump off a building now 😂

All big band music has sounded the same since 1943. Blop blop doodle doodle. 7:37 is a device you always hear in big bands--I call it squealie squealie.
