So U Wanna know something funny? My Band Teacher Right now Is The Tenor Sax Player beside the bass clarinet player. And Of course being succesfull in the one o clock lab band he needed a job. And so now He is teaching me. Another Tenor Sax Player. Maybe One Day Im Going to be in his place. (I hope)
I completely agree! There's definitely a giant difference between his sound and Brecker's sound. His sound has that richness that comes from a nice fat hard rubber piece!
@KrummyBear dude....thanks man! reading these few comments has made my day. coincidentally, I'm not a brecker head...I just got into his style for this arrangement. I do love his playing very much though.
@HerrFoobert - I'd say he has a fat sound. Mouthpiece is just a tool. Someone else can play on a Hard-Rubber Ponzol and totally different. Mark is a boss, which is why he sounds good, and he would sound amazing on anything!
Excellent performance (as usual - been a great fan of the 1 o'clock for decades). I really liked the video editing (except for the close up of the drummer's addidas - who cares?) BTW - is that a torso harness to be clipped to a lesh on the bass clarinet? (just kiddin').
@gjbsaxman94 I disagree. The lead tenor has a tone that is more prominent in the low-midrange spectrum than Mr. Brecker's tone. He has a very nice tone though!
Mouthpiece looks like an Otto Link to me, he takes in an unusually large amount of mouthpiece, and I would guess it's a pretty massive tip opening, probably .115 or bigger. Everyone's sound is different though. Closest I've personally ever come to a sound like that was with a pretty insane setup - Phil Tone Solstice (similar to a Link with a larger chamber) .120/9* with a D'Addario Select Jazz 3 medium.
Hey guys-I'm playing on a Peter Ponzol Hard Rubber Traditional mpc that I got about 11 years ago. Not sure if he still makes them. it's a .110 tip opening. The reason it looks like I'm taking so much mpc is bc I have a moderate overbite. Rico Jazz 3S unfiled reeds. Hope this helps!
I've tried those mouthpieces and they just didn't really work for me. I really like the Jody Jazz DV NY with Vandoren ZZ 4 reeds. Mark doesn't know what he's talking about, that is a completely incompatible combination of reed and mouthpiece.
Does not swing. Complexity for its own sake doesn't make for good jazz. Now I'm gonna go listen to Woody Herman's first herd play Wildroot. Classics are classics for a reason.
My god, the drummers in the one o' clock bands are unbelievable.
This band needs to come back
Geez that trombone solo is incredible!!
Sweet mother of god that bone solo is relentless
cоло саксофона говно послушай брекера
The first trumpet has really good tone.
Thank you 🙏🏼
NTS-Excellent Jazz Band and has been as long as I can remember in the last 40 years. Michael Brecker and his brother Randy are awesome.

we NEED a 2011 reunion
70s crime drama action music. Love it.

As a former tenor player and big band player/lover, they give me hope....
Awesome arrangement, Kevin! Hope it gets many more performances.
Can't stop listening to this. Well done, Swaim. Well done, One O'Clock.
GREAT SOUND !!!!!!!!!!! YEAH YEAH YEAH!!!
hmm i should go practice @__@
*Muito bom, parabéns*
Yes.
Not a typo. It is spelled this way on the 2003 Michael Brecker recording of the tune on the CD "Wide Angles".
This is incredible arrangement, well done!
lol tambourDOM..:)) like this style of jazz many thanks to northtexasjazz...from France;)
Incredible. Love it!
Infectious , Thank God or Buddha for Jazz Musicians Everywhere

The trombone's solo is very cool!
@tambourDOM it's called 'The Last Theme Song' I think the video of it has just been posted. It will be the last track on lab 2011.
How many of these excellent musicians make a good living ??
Amazing, one more subscriber
Amazing. Subscribed.
Excellent!
Holy crap, a flute! Bad ass!

That's the way that Michael Brecker spelled it back in the day. I don't know why, but that's the correct spelling.
Michael's brother is the amazing trumpet player Randy Brecker... hence the spelling...
Yay!
great sound ...what is the name of the saxophonist and his setup? .....He is very, very good!
+CARLO MALANDRA The tenor sax soloist is Mark De Hertogh.
Thank you so much...
two thumbs up for the trombone solo

Drummers care.
Mark DeHertogh is the tenor soloist. Dude sounds JUST like Brecker.
wow! the lead tenor sounds like a straight laced sounding clone of brecker
@gjbsaxman94 I disagree. The lead tenor has a tone that is more prominent in the low-midrange spectrum than Mr. Brecker's tone. He has a very nice tone though!
anyone know the intro tune? sounds awesome
What mouthpiece is that tenor player using?
Thumbs up 10LODE!!!
@jazZaremba hahaha. I like to be thought of as the boss! but seriously, thanks for saying this.
What is that 'bone player playing on?
Who is the drummer? His playing is fantastic, along with the entire ensemble!
Duran Ritz
wow.. better than freakin original
Is there any way for one to purchase this arrangement?
+Paulotticus13 Yes. Send me an email at john.murphy@unt.edu and I will put you in touch with Kevin Swaim.
+Paulotticus13 how much does it cost?
I am not completely sure, but I think it is a play on words having to do with his brother's name.
Does anybody know the tenor soloist's setup?
+Ryan Velten I know that he is using a Vandoran Optimum ligature
+Lachlan McGargill Hahahaha. That's the first thing I noticed. The horn looks very "Selmer-y", especially considering the big S on the octave yoke.

Whos the lead on this?
4:41 - 4:45 o.O
@gjbsaxman94 yeah it was meant to be a compliment :) hahaha
I guess I need to include sarcasm tags for the literal amongst us.
Tribute to his brother?
does every lab band have 2 bass bones??? i play bass bone...
oh, i see ;) Maybe it's because I'm playing the bass clarinet myself...
@Gatorsfreak21 Thanks dude. like i just posted, these comments have made my day.
@LarryLaneTV haha i think that's to show his footwork... not promote adidas
The 2nd tenor has a fat sounding mouthpiece. It's tasty.
These musicians are nothing unless they learn and recognize the contributions that Leon Breeden brought to that program.
there is no bari sax, just tenor sax and bass clarinet
"randy" brecker
That's the ugliest bari sax I've ever seen...

garnerjazz58 hey, whatever preens your pickles weegie brah.
garnerjazz58 🤡
Whats the song in the intro?
It's called "The Last Theme Song" by Steve Wiest, it's also on the lab 2011 album
