One thing I will say is Universities are not, and should not, be home to activism. This is a misunderstanding. Universities are not homes to free speech. They are private institutions. Should lectures in all sorts of controversial topics be held. Yes. Should nuanced discussion between differing view points be expressed passionately. Yes. Should universities be the place students use as their political platform to espouse their personal views. No. It’s not the universities job to facilitate any discussion or movement of anyone who happens to be there. Universities have an agenda. It’s to teach content and teach students how to learn, through the sharing of ideas using things like the Socratic method. We should not fall into the false premise that say, well because there is a Palestinian movement, the university is being unfair by not providing the same platform for the Isralies. That’s a false dichotomy. It’s that they should never have facilitated or allowed a political movement from either side to operate on campus in the first places. Are other students going to physics, computer science, psychology, medicine and so on expected to be bombarded and harassed with political views as they move around campus? No. They pay their fees like anyone else, and should be able to go to class, discuss things, then go home unmolestered. University administrators need to grow a set of balls and say, we aren’t a home to political posturing. If we see it, we’ll crack down on it, and you’ll be removed if you keep it up.
