Yesterday, for #droneday 2021, we performed 1 hour version of La Monte Young's Composition 1960 No.7, one of our favourite classic drone pieces.
2 long tape loops (6m one way and back each) playing this:
Fostex M80 is playing 8 tracks, one note each (half played with doublebass, half with sopran sax, half B, half F#). Uher SG561 is playng the chord with Spitfire Audio's LAB (Strings Flautando), processed with Ciat Lonbarde's Cocoquantus.

Marvelous. Thanks. I was lucky enough to see Robert Fripp doing such masterpieces. The machines were further appart,, he also involved speed variations. Amazing.
Terry Riley has films of his performances w tape installation in European forests. Pure magic.
“To be held for a very long time”.
I really wish La Monte’s stuff was more widely accessible and on streaming platforms, the guy rules.
I was lucky enough to get the entire recorded archive on download. It's very hard to find in the traditional music market places.

The world needs the works of La Monte Young to be republished
Listening to this puts you in a very unique headspace. It's almost dreamlike; I can easily fall into a peaceful sleep while listening to this, and not because I find it boring. Far from it. I find it magical.
That's the beauty of drone.
it reminds me of throat singing

My dear respectable colleagues just left my office laughing their heads off : "is that you listening to THIS ???!!!"
It must be really amusing to people who don't get it. To them, you may as well be listening to your vacuum cleaner.
Congrats, you're now 'that guy' 😄

I can't tell you how much I love this piece thank you!
Was reading the extremely thorough biography of Andy Warhol by Blake Gopnik and saw that Andy loved the drone music of one La Monte Young. This is my first time hearing that music and oh wow... talk about ahead of his time.
Absolutely brilliant.
This composition is quoted in Johan Girard's book on the musical aesthetics of Terry Riley, Steve Reich, Philip Glass.
It describes the adventure of minimalist and repetitive music. La Monte Young is cited as a pioneer in the use of magnetic tape loops. It is indeed an interesting archive to illustrate this experimental period. The sound of the strings is naturally rich but it is further enriched by the defects linked to the unwinding and the suturing of the magnetic loop. Well seen !
Obviously, I am thinking of "Vexations" by Erick Satie and its "loop" played 840 times without cheating on the piano. Score unearthed by John Cage and played in public for the first time in 1963. 24 hours to overcome it. The sound environment is different but inevitably we get into the sound... Thank you for this archive. I put a link on my wall.
If you'd like, it's mentioned in Joachim E. Berendt "Nada Brahma - Die Welt ist Klang" (The world is sound), too. Astonishing book as well
since you mentioned "Vexations", just want to share that Young and Cage's mutual friend and pupil, John Cale, played during
that song's 24 hour performance.
Thank you! Healing holy sound
thank you for sharing. : )
Wow, this is my musical discovery of the day, week and year! I'd never heard of this artist before, but now I'm going to find all that I can. Thank you.
Good shit! Love it.. I had a really nice walk listening to it today , in a cloudy winter day : )
Like outer limits of sounds the numbing of time and space in one place
incredible stuff . . . the video of the reel-to-reels is the cherry on top
Otherworldly yet so comforting.
Very nice
This is really fantastic! Thank you very much for such a brilliant performance of La Monte.
Thank you very much! Incredible. One of the best LMY performances I've ever heard.

Phenomenal. Great upload, amazing presentation. This channel is obviously vastly underappreciated. Thank you for doing this!
A truly beautiful piece of music, thank you so much for this !
Utterly beautiful
Just stumbled on this slice of gorgeousness. A seminal artist. Wonderful to hear a recent performance! :)
Extraordinaire voyage dans le son
Beautiful. Even if it does go a bit wonky at the end. Don't we all. Thank you. 🙂
Don't we all indeed... nice comment 👍
outstanding work 🎉!
This is utterly beautiful!
I use that song as my post workout chill.
very good for melting the mind
1960! Astounding. Thanks for this.
I love the miking and the recording ambience.
Dang, you took a brilliant conceptual piece and made it beautiful and visceral.
Very nice work.
Vibrational!
Thank you.
Amazing! It's absolutely brilliant! This sound .........
Incroyable, tout est dit. Ce qui n'empêchera bon nombre de s'en inspirer et c'est tant mieux 🤩
Yes ,congratulations!! Very nice
What I previously called 1960#7 strings, isn't strings at all, but actually adsmz additive synth modules by sunvox and paulstretch as posted by mavd-. It is the longest example on You Tube, at 3 hrs. 53 mins. To that I set playback speed at 0.25, or 1/4 normal which of course quadruples the total playback time, letting me use it to induce a nice, long sleep.
Wonderful version of this composition

Excelente realización/ interpretación!! Gongrats my friends. Cheers from Chile.

Like the record he made with Marian Zazeela, "The Tambouras of Pandit Pran Nath", this is just drones- but what drones they are!... The harmonics and resonance that develop are just like the consonant vibrations of the cosmos! You get (I think) things in like the 432 Hz. Frequency of the earth, which soothe one into a peaceful sleep, (and I'm sure I'm not the only one).. My preferred version is the one I pull up as "1960#7 strings" with a running time of just under 4 hrs. I wish I knew how to pull up multiple tabs @ once, as recommended by some Terry Riley fans, but I haven't learned how yet..
the real deal
beautiful!
Il MI più lungo di sempre.
Fantastic. Where's the Ket
Together with Eliane Radigue, the best drones out there.
I can see the forefront tape machine is collecting tape from another source off camera, which would produce a long delay, not unlike Terry's 4 second delay on his Poppy No good recordings.. These could be even longer, but as this a continuous drone, it's hard to tell...
Bonito :)
I think this is Marian Zazeela's video art that accompanies this.

Is there a copy of this performance that I can purchase from somewhere on the internet? I do love this composition.

Where's that confounded bridge?...
This was actually fun to play guitar to. It stays in the same key and you can play any scale.
what's your favourite part of the song?
La Monte Young is like the Karlheinz Stockhausen of the United States
which musical instrument was used to create this musical piece?
im afraid im gonna lose my hearing ability after being in the drone ambient field for like 20 or more years i hope that doesnt happen lol
has it?
Tf? Same noise for an hour. Brilliant. Genius level composition. Lol.

You can’t hear drone
this has a similar vibe to Jimmy Page's soundtrack for Lucifer Rising.
Well, i hope he used a heavy object to keep the same organ keyboards pushed down all the time. Otherwise it could cause a muscular cramps.

bit short but alright
In this music does’nt float an atmosphere of mist conducive to dreams and sweet drifts. An atmosphere of diaphanous peace that we sometimes feel without knowing exactly why during certain summer days! these artists do not build a discourse of interiority, of breathing, which knows how to make room for repairman silence and it's a pity🤡
Sounds like Mr Young got his money easy.
