    Hi, I've studied Mandarin for a year and I'm watching your videos to improve my pronunciation since my books don't come with audio CDs so thank you so much for the videos! I am slightly confused about the characters in this video - do you use Traditional Mandarin Chinese because the characters for "shen me" are different from my book, which seem to be a lot simpler than the one used in this video.

      Hey there! Could I ask you what books you use for your studies? I've been lerning Mandarin solely using the Internet, and I'd like to move onto having an actual tangible studying material.

    So, my son is having trouble answering people's questions about what his name is because there is apparently no real equivalent for "Brendan" in the written language. We tried "仁但" and with our "given" last name being 白 (I'm guessing that refers to our race) it kind of sounds like "Bai Ren Dan", a close approximation, but we're not sure if it means something stupid in chinese (we're pretty much all having to learn on the fly). He's really attached to his name because his name is a mix of Brenda and Dannie, his much loved but recently deceased grandparents. (Let's ignore the fact that this might be culturally taboo. When we named him they were still very much alive.) The kid is six and REALLY attached to his name, just changing the pronunciation is proving challenging at this point, but we need something that won't end up making him feel embarrassed. Anyone got any suggestions or comments? We'd like some feedback. Thanks! :o)

    I can hear "xing" pronounced with hard 'S' sound by Peggy and a soft 'sh' sound by Ben. I've heard both pronunciations from other people too, can someone explain why?

    • @daisybrain9423
      @daisybrain9423 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The sound 'x' is represented by the character /ɕ/ in the International Phonetic Alphabet. It's kind of midway between a 's' /s/ and a 'sh' /ʂ/ sound, being pronounced at the same place as /s/, but with a flatter tongue. Also, as far as I know, the pronunciation varies a bit between regions and age. I hope I could help!
