Agreed. When I first heard "chai tea" I was confused why would they say basically "tea tea", or maybe by "chai" they meant something entirely different from tea.
A similar misnomer is "coffee cafe", but "latte chai" would basically mean "milk chai", since latte came from italian "caffe latte", but using an italian word just to specify the presence of the milk is ridicoulus in case with chai. English don't call tea with milk "tea latte"

Everyone should have real chai just once so that 'coffee shop chai tea/latte' is ruined for them. Once you have real chai brewed for you, anything else called 'chai tea/latte' just tastes wrong.
