The chorus known in English as “He Watching over Israel” is Elijah’s best-known excerpt and is frequently performed separately from the rest of the oratorio. The famed chorus is immediately preceded by a delicate a cappella women’s trio known as “Lift Thine Eyes to the Mountains.”. Elijah is alone in the desert, in despair, and angels come to comfort him with the words "Lift thine eyes" and "He watching over Israel". “Elijah”, modeled on the oratorios of Bach and Handel, perfects the use of the orchestra and chorus reflecting Mendelssohn's genius as a composer .
