Could you do this with someone with who is known to make good decisions? Like Chris Paul or Curry? It would be nice to see how they do put under a microscope.
+BBALLBREAKDOWN You gave Russ a "bad" for KD delaying the decision-making and then subsequently getting stripped because of bad footwork? The only thing Russ knew is that he was going to get KD the ball...whether he decided to use an Adams screen on the same side, or Kanter screen on the curl to the opposite side was entirely up to KD. Even if the pass wasn't perfect, how does RUSS get a "BAD" for KD getting stripped...not even a "MEH"? Coach Nick grading on this play: BAD
One can nitpick any player play for play like this. Russ' intensity and athleticism bring more to the team than any of his cons detract. It's his intangibles along with his obvious talent despite the occasional forced plays that make him an asset to OKC.
Coach, You mentioned at the end of the video that plus/minus reflects how Westbrook makes mistakes that often undo his good plays. You then cited that Durant was a +7 and Westbrook was a - 4 in the game. First, any statistician will tell you that single game plus minus is far too small of a sample size to say anything substantive. Second, it is worth noting that this postseason Westbrook has the third highest plus minus of any player at +91. Durant is 20th at +55. Again, ten games is too small of a sample size to say anything substantive, but it is far more useful than a 1 game sample size
These are super interesting. I would love it if we could have some of these with Lebron, Steph, Kawhi, etc. for comparison. Also, adding a Great and a Terrible along with Good, Bad, and Meh would be really helpful. The thing with Russ is, yes, he makes some awful plays, but some of the Goods he gets are pretty insanely amazing Goods. When he drives and dishes, he gets people wide open, and gets hustle plays nobody else can. Would LOVE to see more of these.
I agreed with a lot, but there were a few I didn't. He had a Dirk fade-away and missed and you gave him a bad, then he did another Dirk fade-away and made it and you gave him a good. Otherwise, it was pretty spot on.
I really like this series because we get to see the full breakdown of superstars through a game. Could be awesome to see this done for all the major stars on each team during the Eastern and Western Finals.
Russ will never be a steady, mistake-free player - he is balls-to-the-wall, full speed and wreckless by nature - mostly to the Thunder's benefit. Some of the "good" plays here (11:35, 11:57, 12:50, and 14:10) were not only some of the BIGGEST plays of the series, but plays that very few players in the league can produce. Beautiful to watch.
I think some of the Meh plays aren't bad. They're "not good" but I wouldn't use some of those plays as argument against good plays. I see big time improvement from Russ. Still a crazy guy but definitely has improved. He used to be out of control all the time but now plays with more thought to say the least. Good video!
+BBALLBREAKDOWN LOVE these play-by-play analyses. It would be really great to see other point guards like Curry and CP3 in these types of videos. It would really show who the best point guard is. Not that basketball IQ is all that matters, but PG's are meant to be the on-court coach and this really highlights why they are. Great Work
Hurr a Durr you're speaking to a CP3 fanatic haha! Favorite player of all time but still, Steph's shooting skill is something never seen before and Russ is easily the most athletic PG of all time.
+That Dude Definitely a great breakdown but I'm not sure this kind of metric would necessarily answer all of those questions. Certain "good" plays (e.g. a Westbrook offensive rebound out of nowhere or a full-court attack for a layup) are worth more than other "good" plays (e.g. a CP3 correct read of a PnR or accurate lob pass). With Westbrook the "bad" plays are always going to be apparent, but perhaps the two biggest individual plays of the game (12:50 & 14:10) were plays that perhaps only he alone can make at the PG position. Love the breakdown but think its value comes as part of this wider context. Respect.
DavoBirmingham2 Totally agree. Each PG nowadays has a different playstyle which they excel in. Some good plays can be bad plays for other PGs. But I never meant to compare PGs based off this video. I just wanted to see which PGs make the right plays, suited for their playstyle.
there was several Plays that you said meh and bad that I don't really understand. several times he took layups that he more often than not hits, but you called them bad plays, among other plays. overall, not a bad breakdown though
+Roronoa Zoro I agree. Also, sometimes he got one vote in plays where clearly had to get two, like those possessions that ended with a decision from him then led to a rebound for okc with another play rigth after. I think he deserved a little more credit in this game. I'm happy about his improvement on the defensive side btw.
I'm willing to bet if you make a "comprehensive breakdown" of every single play that any player was involved in for an entire game, especially including *DEFENSE*, they would more-often-than-not come back with a WORSE conclusion than this one. I can only think of two players with a similar amount of responsibility to Westbrook that MIGHT consistently be an exception: Chris Paul and Kawhi Leonard. Considering the circumstances, this concept is weak for several reasons: one reason is that its impossible to grade all of these plays objectively because of other players' effect on the defensive string. Another reason is that it fails to take into consideration Westbrook's impact on the defensive string to begin with, a la plays that "he wasn't directly involved in". Also, that biased, backhanded complimenting you decided to include in your overall conclusion just reinforces my point perfectly. Coach Nick's "Good/Bad/Meh" videos *specially* *reserved* for Russell Westbrook: *MEH*
Max Goodwin Are you serious? Do you really not realize that its actually the EXACT opposite of what you just said? Go read the comments...there are people that consider Coach Nick as an authority on this topic and MANY others; his commentary is very convincing. If everyone were able to just appreciate the play by play breakdowns (which ARE entertaining and fun to watch for any true basketball fan), while realizing that they are still in essence SEVERELY subjective, often lacking proper *context*, thereby limiting their comprehensiveness in regards to the subject they claim to research/breakdown in the video title...then I wouldn't see a problem. Instead, there are people that come away from watching this video who *legitimately* feel like Coach Nick just explained "why his +/- was a -4 while Durant had a +7" (HAH!), and that Westbrook might not "*ever* get to the point where he can minimize those bad plays". Like....what?? Seriously?
it's really spending time to break it detailed like this coz he needs to rewatch the same game many times to make sure there is no other missing detail.
that stupid lob in the firs play resulted in two points....the pass wasn't perfect but kd still should of dunked it. Westbrook beat the spurs....next up warriors.
+A.R. Smith wesbrook is not perfect but he leads league in assists during the playoffs when u do that its okay to get some turnovers. He crushed the spurs despite turnovers.
This guy is the biggest Thunder hater of them all. It's not just Westbrook.Theres an entire track record that casts no doubt on his bias. I'll be anticipating the "how the Thunder got lucky and won, despite..." video to come out if they win it all too.
I would be interested to see this kind of video but for Kevin Love actually, to see how important he is to the Cavs even though he isn't shooting very well
I'd say add another column- Russ/Special(above good). There were like 3-4 plays Russ made that game that almost no one else in the world can make, but then you should probably add one last column that is very bad/boneheaded mistakes. Which he made a couple this game.
+BBALLBREAKDOWN Coach Nick you should do these "Good, Bad, or Meh" videos more often. Great analysis. I think Russ's decision-making is what separates him from being an MVP.
From 26-21 (2012) to 39-44 (2014) to 57-40 (2016). I guess we can say he has improved a bit, despite the higher usage, but still, that's just too many bad decisions. Maybe you should make the same type of video with other elite point guards (CP3, Curry, Kyrie, Wall, Lillard, etc.).
+Minkki82 So adding a pull up game, post up game, and being one of the best distributers in the NBA right now, has to do with athleticism. Don't act like he just relies on his athleticism and his drive to impact the game.
+Ankle Reaper247 well to be fair, he attracts a lot of attention due to his athleticism so he can find the open teammates. So when he gets older, it will be interesting to see if he could dish out passes like what he is doing right now
I thought you where perhaps a tad hard on him for a few of his passes, but very cool video, maybe next time you could add a very good and very bad category.
+BBALLBREAKDOWN Haha, ya I was thinking that extra category's would probably make it take even longer to analyze the game film. But once again great work and love the videos!
You can also make a video on the officials' calls by the end of this game. I think this game calls for a video even more than game 3 (after all in game 3 the officials were "lucky" in the sense that Spurs stole the ball and got their chance anyway though this is no excuse).
great video this is how someone should analyze a player and learn from their own plays This should be done more often for different players Do one with Curry or Lebron 5:17 is not Meh it's BAD he's posting a player he doesn't have an advantage over, not facilitating an offense with 16 seconds on the clock no one else touches the ball its a chuck 5:29 driving into a lane with 4 defenders with 19 on the clock is not MEH its BAD. refs bailed him out 7:00 Just because a guy misses the shot doesn't make it bad a top tier finisher in the league is going to average high 70s% successrate He made the right play and move , its GOOD 9:00 Good by Russ, who's the fool who has Kanter shooting 3s? 11:56 no issue here, he gets tot he rim with 5 on the clock for a layup. I'll take a layup attempt all day especially from that possession. GOOD
Hey Coach, I really think your Westbrook propaganda has reached new heights with this video. You never do this to any other player...completely neutralize their positive impact by ATTEMPTING to highlight all the negative things they did as well. I posted on this video like 30 minutes after it came out, I guess this is just a channel after all...clearly not a conversation. Are YOU IN.... ...a state of depression after game 6?
+orvcharl1 +BBALLBREAKDOWN The comment above is so concise and truthful...Coach Nick I think your analytical skills are off the charts when it comes to basketball but you seem to have a hard time accepting players and teams that do not fit within the mould of how you FEEL basketball should be played... Russell Westbrook just anchored the defeat of arguably the best Spurs team we have ever seen...the team he led (on the floor) beat a team twice at home that lost their just ONCE in 41 games prior and you're attempting to make his contribution appear to be slightly above negligible at best... You need to do a bit of soul searching because this individual you seem to have a disdain for is still quite possibly the second or third best point guard in the NBA...yet you are hellbent on making sure that the negative is highlighted as much as possible...while simultaneously giving only praise to his PG counterparts (see: Chris Paul & Steph Curry videos)...I bet his game one performance where they defeated the record setting best team in the nba at home last night was slightly above negligible as well...In summation...Coach Nick you really need to get over your disdain for Russell Westbrook...he impacts the game positively in ways that for the most part cannot be duplicated by any basketball player on earth with the same frequency Still a incredible channel BTW...Cheers Coach :)
To be honest I don’t think the pull up midrange with 18 seconds on the clock when no other okc player even touched the ball on those possessions is a good idea
Man I love you and your videos. I love this sport and am glad someone is willing to take the time to educate the public on the intricacies of basketball. On the topic of Russ, thank you for adding some evidence to my already-present belief that he is drastically overrated. The most ridiculous thing was the fact that he had that crazy stat line and his +/- was -4. That just says all kinds of things about how he is a stat padder.
Westbrook just crushed the spurs....he is doing just fine. Russell has inefficient stats but u can't messure heat hustle and dominance with stats. all things Westbrook has. this coach guy is a nerd who hasn't played highsChool ball. guys like him know a lot about the game but there are things only a player can know about the game Imo. although we learn a lot from nerds and analytics sometimes the nerds forget about the human aspect of the game. Westbrook inspires his team even when he makes dumb plays. his heart and hustle drive his team to knew heights.
It seems like Russell is improving but there's so many tiny mistakes that Russell still hasn't learned which make it sad to watch him play sometimes. The highlights are great but that's it. Will he ever learn?
+Jesus Noland The "highlights" have fueled his team to the Conference Finals for the 4th time in his career. He will never be a steady, mistake-free player - he is balls-to-the-wall, full speed and wreckless by nature - mostly to the Thunder's benefit. Some of the absolute biggest plays in the series here (11:35, 11:57, 12:50, and 14:10) were plays that few other players at his position make. Beautiful to watch.
this video is great for both teams, showing what thunder and russ can do better, while showing how many more bad's there were for the spurs than good...almost every play russ miss, there was an offensive rebound by thunder smh
i just can't fathom how the spurs are losing these games. they always seem to be in control till a slew of fantom calls and free throws end the big leads and switches the momentum.
That's game 3 bro, Spurs where getting phantom calls all game always stopping OKC's momentum. Plus Spurs at one point scored all there points from the free throw line. Plus they just missed shots.
Good: 57
Bad: 28
Meh: 12
So there's another triple dub for Rus..
I REMEMBER A LONGGG TIME AGO THERE WAS A GOOD BAD MEH WESTBROOK VIDEO.. Loved it!
Accidentally counts two bad's as good's (3:47 and 4:18)
Paul Harris r
Could you do this with someone with who is known to make good decisions? Like Chris Paul or Curry? It would be nice to see how they do put under a microscope.
+Mat Lit EXACTLY what I was thinking as well...
+Mat Lit Or even retired legends like Jason Kidd, Steve Nash. I feel as if we don't have enough breakdowns of good decision makers.
+Mat Lit lebron too
Agree
Coach, you should do breakdowns of vintage nba games. Like I would love to see some Larry Bird breakdowns.
same, especially for youngbloods like me who didnt get a chance to see him play
Really enjoying the differentiating content you've been putting out coach. Thank you!!!
Legend says if you are early Coach Nick responds
Nah brah
+Zach Walker early, late, I try to respond to everyone! #ImIn 👍👊🏀

Coach Nick grading on this play: BAD
+orvcharl1 because its a poor pass and a unnecessary risk giving the circumstances the distance was way to far for a lob pass
AlxFonso Gaming
I'm not talking about the lob pass...not even a little bit.
This could seriously be a new series, Coach! can't wait to see GBM with all the superstars still in the playoffs.
There were a few times where you added a point for GOOD instead of BAD.
One can nitpick any player play for play like this. Russ' intensity and athleticism bring more to the team than any of his cons detract. It's his intangibles along with his obvious talent despite the occasional forced plays that make him an asset to OKC.

Coach Nick in MVP mode! Overall rating of 99! Thank you!

Thanks for the vid coach !
these kind of videos are awesome! great breakdown and also helps me understanding the whole game more. keep it up!

+saprisabu thanks. There has been some improvement for sure. I derive no pleasure from grading his bad plays.
+BBALLBREAKDOWN yeah you do
we all do
that might be the main pillar of bballbrekdown community
@bballbreakdown please make a series of this good, bad, meh stuff!
Yay you brought this back :)
If you are going to turn around and say Meh are bad plays then why even have that category?. Whats the point?
so he can put more plays in the meh section and then call them bad so he can talk shit about westbrook while he is still winning hahaha....
He aint winning to more
You guys don’t seem to know what meh really means 😂
You should do more of this! Very interesting!
More of these Coach!
watching these kinds of videos help alot.
7:16 ......as a Thunder fan, I have to say that any pass the results in Roberson shooting a shot that isn't a Dunk or Lay-up is bad lol
Great Work
+That Dude CP3 is the very definition of point guard in today's NBA. Look up Coach's video on CP3.
Hurr a Durr you're speaking to a CP3 fanatic haha! Favorite player of all time but still, Steph's shooting skill is something never seen before and Russ is easily the most athletic PG of all time.
+That Dude Definitely a great breakdown but I'm not sure this kind of metric would necessarily answer all of those questions. do more good bad meh video they are great
These videos have more intellectual basketball discussion than days worth of ESPN programming. Thanks for the excellent content!
ESPN is mostly for ppl who just like looking at flashy shit.
Hey coach another video
Like this for game 1 vs GSW
At 3:48 Coach Nick says bad and then a point is added to good instead making it 16-5-2
+Tayclamation And the same thing happens again at 4:20 when Russ commits the charge
I don't know why some people are complaining, but I agree with all the things you said in the video. Great break down, coach.
Damn Coach Nick, back at it again with the analysis.
Counter error at 4:20. Russ is credited for 19th good play when it should be 7th bad play.
Great, creative video
Lol, this good, bad, meh is a classic from you!!
I loved this video
there was several Plays that you said meh and bad that I don't really understand. several times he took layups that he more often than not hits, but you called them bad plays, among other plays. overall, not a bad breakdown though
Hey Coach, out of curiosity, what would be your most ideal job relating to Basketball? Love the video as usual.
4:12 you added a "bad" to the "good" counter
Russell played great this game. I was expecting more boneheaded plays but they never appeared. Kudos to him
Awesome Video any chance you do this same style video with another player to see how this would apply to someone like KD Step or Lebron?
Can you do more of these?
You should do one with Curry
Curry.... He will be the best for these few years, since he is new nba idol....
I'm willing to bet if you make a "comprehensive breakdown" of every single play that any player was involved in for an entire game, especially including *DEFENSE*, they would more-often-than-not come back with a WORSE conclusion than this one. Coach Nick's "Good/Bad/Meh" videos *specially* *reserved* for Russell
Westbrook: *MEH*

Well said.
orvcharl1 i meant nobody who actually means anything in the basketball world uses this to judge how good a player is
remember when Coach Nick said Russ wouldn't be a elite PG & he would be better as a SG now he's arguably the best PG in the league LoL
You should start making those kinds of videos again in 2021 ... Amazing breakdowns play by play ...
it's really spending time to break it detailed like this coz he needs to rewatch the same game many times to make sure there is no other missing detail.
Russ throws that stupid fuckin lob to KD every single game and I cant help but think of this channel when it happens
that stupid lob in the firs play resulted in two points....the pass wasn't perfect but kd still should of dunked it. Westbrook beat the spurs....next up warriors.
cray 3K it worked one time whooptie fucking do. don't be selective that 9/10 its a turnover or missed opportunity

I think this could be a interesting series
Lmao He's the nigga that grades us on 2k My Player
at 3:46 you give him a "good" point for a play you consider as bad :)
Why did you stop talking about the Raptors vs Heat?
coach nick the spurs had a chance to win it but they missed shots
respect westbrook now BBALLBREAKDOWN! He's Now a Superstar..
4:22 You make a mistake at the classification board
It would be intresting to see similar breakdown on Curry! Id love to see that!
I'd say add another column- Russ/Special(above good). There were like 3-4 plays Russ made that game that almost no one else in the world can make, but then you should probably add one last column that is very bad/boneheaded mistakes. Which he made a couple this game.
How come you never did one of these on lebron or curry?I swear you pick and choose who to hate on
+BBALLBREAKDOWN Coach Nick you should do these "Good, Bad, or Meh" videos more often.
Glad to see you're still a harsh critic of Westbrook ever since he was a young player in the league.
true
+Sean Olivera yeah with a couple knee surgeries already..

6:36
am I going to be the only one to point out Parker actually broke Kenter's ankles from 10 feet away?
Yo Coach you should do this breakdown at Sloan - mad analytics bro!
+Brian Leung (bdl244) haha, sounds good. Maybe next year. 👍👊🏀
+BBALLBREAKDOWN u should coach in the nba lol
3:48 and 4:16 shouldn't be counted as goods
Coach, which one of these teams are better equipped to take on the Warriors?
you should do this again for game 6
good analysis
That KD travelling tho @ 6:12
57-28-12? Those are practically Wilt numbers from Westbrook. Amazing.
The counter didn't go up a couple of times.
Coach Nick, how about that monster rebound he got over David West that lead to a fast break?
9:10
I thought you where perhaps a tad hard on him for a few of his passes, but very cool video, maybe next time you could add a very good and very bad category.

Great Coverage
great video
this is how someone should analyze a player and learn from their own plays
This should be done more often for different players
Do one with Curry or Lebron
5:17 is not Meh it's BAD
he's posting a player he doesn't have an advantage over, not facilitating an offense with 16 seconds on the clock no one else touches the ball
its a chuck
5:29 driving into a lane with 4 defenders with 19 on the clock is not MEH
its BAD. refs bailed him out
7:00 Just because a guy misses the shot doesn't make it bad
a top tier finisher in the league is going to average high 70s% successrate
He made the right play and move , its GOOD
9:00 Good by Russ, who's the fool who has Kanter shooting 3s?
11:56 no issue here, he gets tot he rim with 5 on the clock for a layup. I'll take a layup attempt all day especially from that possession. GOOD
cp3 with that type of a video because we all know hes the king of decisions

You need to do a bit of soul searching because this individual you seem to have a disdain for is still quite possibly the second or third best point guard in the NBA...yet you are hellbent on making sure that the negative is highlighted as much as possible...while simultaneously giving only praise to his PG counterparts (see: Chris Paul & Steph Curry videos)...I bet his game one performance where they defeated the record setting best team in the nba at home last night was slightly above negligible as well...In summation...Coach Nick you really need to get over your disdain for Russell Westbrook...he impacts the game positively in ways that for the most part cannot be duplicated by any basketball player on earth with the same frequency
Still a incredible channel BTW...Cheers Coach :)
To be honest I don’t think the pull up midrange with 18 seconds on the clock when no other okc player even touched the ball on those possessions is a good idea
You should do one for Kawhi Leonard in this game. get a view from both sides of the table. How about it Coach Nick?
+iMyoto I'm thinking of doing it for Steph tonight...
+BBALLBREAKDOWN please do it. it avoids favoritism and allows us to critic Steph's decisions
+BBALLBREAKDOWN can you do these for all the top players that handle the ball?
thank you for the consideration. keep it up!
Agree kawhi sometimes out of his mind for guarding westbrook
Just a Quick Advice - If you were going to make a good bad meh video on Steph Curry, you should add a WTF column on it
coach what is your nba team?

bad was mentioned but did not add to the counter
Man I love you and your videos. I love this sport and am glad someone is willing to take the time to educate the public on the intricacies of basketball. On the topic of Russ, thank you for adding some evidence to my already-present belief that he is drastically overrated. The most ridiculous thing was the fact that he had that crazy stat line and his +/- was -4. That just says all kinds of things about how he is a stat padder.
is 2:1 ratio for good:bad decisions is even decent for an elite guard? the meh makes it even worse
+Lior Zisman about half the bad was not bad at all
Westbrook just crushed the spurs....he is doing just fine. Westbrook inspires his team even when he makes dumb plays. his heart and hustle drive his team to knew heights.
some plays Russian makes are beyond good. Russell makes decisions most humans can't even pull off.
This was a good/great game for him.
would love to see a comparison version of this with a player known as a "good decision maker" like Chris Paul.
+phantom3668 thunder are huge and young. great rebounding team
will the Momentum of the win be enough to beat the Spurs in game 6?
Yes sir
Metro Boomin oh shit my SPURS are so FUCKED.!!

spurs offense seems to have stagnated compared to 2013/14. Can you diagnose? Is LA's post skill to blame?
i just can't fathom how the spurs are losing these games. they always seem to be in control till a slew of fantom calls and free throws end the big leads and switches the momentum.
That's game 3 bro, Spurs where getting phantom calls all game always stopping OKC's momentum. Plus Spurs at one point scored all there points from the free throw line. Plus they just missed shots.
didnt add a bad at 3:48
