Hi Michael,
What is the rope or string used for on right hand side of some hand gliders? what does it adjust?

That's the VG (variable geometry) adjustment.
Tightening or loosening this changes the angle of the leading edges. Tightening increases the glide performance at the expense of responsiveness.
