2024 Lexus GX on/off-road review: Previewing the LandCruiser Prado

  • While the Lexus GX has been on sale in the US for a number of years, this will be the first time it's offered in Australia and we're pretty excited about it. Not only will it get a punchy turbocharged V6 petrol engine, it'll go off-road like the best of them. Paul Maric checks it out at the international launch.

    Paul, great review and impressive vehicle, my only concern is if it's only offered with a petrol motor here in Australia, there would be limitations on where it could go given that some areas in the Australian outback/desert only have diesel available?

    • @jayd3931
      @jayd3931 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      That's not correct. I've been all over Australia, including some of the most remote parts, all on a motorcycle. Never once had a problem getting petrol. Even the outback stations have it. Consider that a motorcycle doesn't have the range of this vehicle either. The Patrol, Ranger Raptor, and many other vehicles are also petrol, and in the outback. My Prado is petrol as well. Definitely never an issue.

I'm looking to get a new car but I'm worried if I was to get a petrol/hybrid, are petrol cars are going to be declining very fast over the next 5 years(in price and fuel expense) Is it worth making the jump now?

    • @CarExpertAus
      @CarExpertAus  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Currently it’s electric cars that have accelerated depreciation. It really depends which segment you’re buying in - if you’re over landing or towing I wouldn’t go near an EV. If you have home charging and primarily drive around the city an EV will be more cost effective, but just factor in the depreciation.

    Really keen to see the Prado version reach Australia.
    Never in my life have I wanted a 4x4, but that next gen Prado in the "First Edition" yellow/white scheme, really does it for me.

      Toyota stuff is generally pretty reliable. 4 prado’s, zero issues except the diesel, was glad to see the arse end of that one, the other 3 were petrol with zero issues with anything and yes used off road and towing

      I'm sure it has both.This engine was first used by Lexus 7 years ago in LS500 luxury sedan and LC500 coupe.
      Should be a proven engine design by now.

    If you tow a travel trailer using a weight distribution hitch, a body on frame vehicle makes more sense than a unibody style vehicle. You can use max/adequate weight distribution without fear of frame stress as opposed to concern about body stress on a unibody vehicle. That for me is why a BMW or Audi is not on my list of competitors. I also like Toyota/Lexus reputation for reliability.

    Seriously would love to know why the US GX 550 has 9096 Lb's of towing capacity and the Australian version only sits at 3500kg. same care!!! know all well toyota australia doesn't want this to overtake the 300 series.

    luxury - petrol - Off-road wagon, it competes with Nissan Y62 Patrol which you can get for less money.

    I think it’s great and at Aus$110,000 or UK£60,000 it is certainly competitive. The UK will probably get the LCruiser version and with the 2.8 200hp/500Nm diesel engine. Will probably cost at least as much as this Lexus due to our ridiculous CO2 fleet sales targets. They will not wish to sell many of them unless they add fines for exceeding CO2 into the basic price.

      It’s coming with a better engine than both the 3.3L diesel and the 2.8L diesel. I don’t understand people who bias to a fuel type but ignore the torque and other performance of a power plant. Modern diesels are not the diesels of yester year.

      @@lukecarling4223 yea they like a drink towing, I’ve had 3 V6 prado’s, currently got the Y62 patrol. Surprisingly better on fuel than the Prado towing, bit thirstier around town but on par open road, but heaps more grunt than the Prado v6.

    Once you drive Full Size SUV like Navigator or Escalade you will never go back to those smaller SUVs. The cabin space is just incomparable, the rear legroom is not there in all of those mid-size SUVs like for example GX. But generally, the design of GX is amazing! Hardcore rigid SUV in a luxury package.

    • @jayd3931
      @jayd3931 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Neither of those are available in Australia. Also, the GX is far better off road. Escalades never leave the pavement. If you want full size, look at the LX, which is superior to either of the models you mentioned.
