My dad was playing college football in 1974. At one point, he and the rest of his team were invited to a free screening of The Texas Chainsaw Massacre. Now, it's important to keep in mind that this was still relatively an age of innocence when it came to movies. People weren't desensitized to horror the way many of us are now. In 1974, this tough bunch of college football players were so disturbed by what they saw that they lost their game the next day. True story.

Fun fact the survivor girl in this movie was actually trying to run as fast as she could, but she's not even basically athletic. So the other actors had to slow down during the chase scenes and improvise running serpentine or stopping completely at times to let her get ahead.
Bonus fact: when they were cutting her finger to feed grandpa, they had trouble cutting through the fake skin and blood packet. They ended up using a real knife, but then accidentally cut the actress for real.

    • @davidgloier2913
      @davidgloier2913 ปีที่แล้ว +13

She actually hurt herself on one of the window jumps, and that's why she ran so slowly. They had someone else jump through the window, but unnecessarily had her jump off a six foot high platform.

    • @Bluesit32
      @Bluesit32 ปีที่แล้ว +20

It wasn't an accident. The actors were in hellish conditions. It was HOT, the meat around them was rotting, and they had been filming for over 24 hours straight. Gunner Hansen just said, "screw it" and actually cut her finger. According to Hansen, he was near delirious by that point. The heat and long hours is also what led to that chainsaw dance at the end.

A fun note. Among a DVD release, they talked with Edwin Neal, who played the hitchhiker. During this, he tells a story about how he would go to midnight showings and sit in the back. Then, during the movie, he’d go up behind one of the moviegoers and say “It’s a nice picture.” After they’d freak out, they’d go get the usher. When they’d come back, Neal would look at them and act like nothing was wrong. “What? I’m just sitting here trying to watch the movie. I have no idea what they’re talking about.”

    • @Sundowner13

@@Sundowner13 While Leatherface is the central character for the Texas Chainsaw Massacre movies, I think the “secondary” family member has played a role that is just as iconic. Edwin Neal as “The Hitchhiker” has such a creepy personality that is such a major part of the tone for the movie. In the second one, Bill Moseley as “Chop Top” does the same thing to add a layer of camp, which was what that movie was shooting for. In “The Next Generation”, Matthew McConaughey as Vilmer was so good.

This film is an absolute masterpiece. What I truly love about it is how it almost feels like a documentary with the way it was shot. It's so dirty, so grimey, that it truly feels plausible that everything in it is real and can happen, even Grandpa, who's basically a supercentenarian. And the way it ends so ubruptly is perfect after all that madness. It just leaves the viewer shocked, drained, speechless, etc. The cast and crew really did suffer for their art as making it was an absolutely terrible experience for all involved due to the heat and the extremely long hours it took to shoot. Love your reaction to it. You've got a subscriber in me 👍

29:13 A comment on another channel's "Texas Chainsaw Massacre" reaction explained that the driver had shut off the engine of his truck thinking he would have to remain stopped for a good while as he gave Sally first aid, got her explanation of what was happening, waited for the cops/ambulance to arrive, or whatever and that starting up a 1970's semi truck from being fully shut off is complicated and time consuming, so rather than sitting there for an extended period trying to start his truck started with a chainsaw wielding maniac just inches away from him, he ran for his life. I'm not familiar with the operation of a semi, so I don't know it that's correct, but that's the explanation I read.

I recently finished reading the book of Gunnar Hansen, who played Leatherface in this one. He was genuinely scared to death of missing an inch while "cutting" Kirk because of the terrible vision the mask gave him. That, and they were also high as kites on weed brownies for large parts of the night chase scenes. That's the real reason why he bolts at her scream after entering the freshly cut door.

One of my favorite movie trivia is that filming the dinner scene was a genuinely hellish experience for the crew that took them ages in heat and stench, so their despair and mania in the camera is partially real. The guy who played the deranged hitch hiker family member was a Vietnam war veteran, and later on remarked that filming the dinner scene was worse than anything he ever experienced in Vietnam.

Hiya Kat ☺️ Ohh The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (TCM) from 1974. In the U.K. this film literally was shown for about a year at release until the censors banned it for 25 odd years until 1999 when it finally got its re-classification and was allowed another release. In the U.K. back in the late 70’s and early 80’s, TCM became what was widely called a “video nasty” along with other such noticeable titles as The Exorcist (which was also banned in the U.K. for many years). These films traded hands in pubs and clubs on pirated VHS tapes for many years and became almost mythical in status.
So, once again a young director (Tobe Hooper) a bunch of unknown actors, everything done on the cheap, (total film cost was around $60,000), and that gorilla filming style that gives it an documentary “real” feeling. It was a tough shoot in Texas, middle of summer 115f (45c) temperatures which made it unbearable for all concerned.
But this film broke new ground, it was innovative and it would be picked over, studied and its influences would shape horror films for decades to come. It’s also a movie that is constantly shifting.
Audiences in the early days were shocked by the film, in later years that would change to laughter and in current times the film promotes general uneasiness and dread. Some say it’s almost like TCM has tracked the changed attitudes of people over the decades as they desensitise to the horror in our own world.
Over the years TCM has been called “artless”, “crude”, “only enjoyable by those with a warped, twisted and sick minds” and some more colourful critiques that l won’t mention lol 😂 but they miss the point.
It’s called all these things as everything on the screen seemed so real by way of the acting, direction and the documentary style it was shot in. That was radical and something not really seen in horror films until then. Even the distribution of the film was controversial as the company was owned by the mob out of Chicago so no one really knows the true grosses on it as the mob wouldn’t open the books to give the figures!
TCM is a horror film that shifted cultural values and should have been Tobe Hoopers breakout film. In later years his other notable film would be 1982’s Poltergeist (which l am sure you will get to) but that came with a different kind of controversy. Steven Spielberg was the executive producer of the film and rumours flew around that he “ghost directed” it and Tobe was just there to help in effect. Spielberg even took out full page advertisements in Variety to try and squash the rumour but it stuck and Poltergeist does have that Spielberg gloss over it.
Subsequently, Tobe never really hit the heights he should have and he took work where ever possible but never had the same gravitas as other horror directors of that period.
This has been a golden reaction Kat, truly one of the best of the channel and l look forward as always to the next upload ☺️👍🏼

Like when you had your left hand up ready to strike like the guy did with the hammer in the movie, or when you said, "Stab him in the face". lol But I was surprised that you seemed to have a little sympathy for Leatherface when his dad was beating him considering that he had killed all those people. Super Great Reaction! It was very enjoyable. And you have a beautiful smile too.

Hey Kat! Some trivia for you... Even though The Texas Chainsaw Massacre is pure fiction, it was patterned after a real life crazed serial killer named Ed Gein (nicknamed the Ghoul of Plainfield). The classic movie, Psycho, was also based on Ed Gein too. Look him up and see just how psychotic and creepy that man truly was.

If you want a “KILLER” movie based on real events in Texas, even using some of the real townsfolk who were there, watch “Bernie”, with Jack Black, Shirley MacLaine, and Matthew McConaughey.

That was funny how she held up her fist like she was about to whack someone in the head or waiting for it to happen to someone in the movie haha.

This movie gets an A+ in atmosphere. Even though very little gore or blood is actually shown, the feeling and tension the film gives leaves the viewer feeling sick, disturbed and a bit drained. If you pay close attention you can see that Leatherface changes his macabre masks. Another thing not too many fans notice is the fact that this is the only Chainsaw Massacre movie where he uses a small chainsaw. In the sequels and remakes (there are a lot of remakes to this...lol) he uses the extra long chainsaws.
There are a lot of interesting behind the scenes facts. The movie was banned in a lot of places. The filming was grueling for everyone involved, and the cast and crew went through a lot; were barely paid in the end.

When I was going to high school in Austin Texas in the early 1980's the house where they filmed this movie was still standing, derelict near Round Rock, Texas. I heard that high schoolers would dare each other to go inside. The site is now the La Frontera mixed-use development. The house itself was moved to Kingsland, Texas and was used as a cafe but I understand is now in danger of being torn down like the Michael Myers house. : (

Glad you included the "year". It's helpful in a lot of things. You are right about hitchhiking falling apart. It went from just bad hikers, to bad drivers kidnapping too. Then Halloween was damaged in the 70s and 80s (just like this, movies are replays/warnings)and probably won't be the same

@3:33 “He’ll be fine- Oh! he’s going deep” Your reactions to the intensity and suspense of this film are priceless. Edwin Neal (The Hithchiker) has stated he based his performance on his nephew who is a paranoid schizophrenic. Also Tobe Hooper (the director) stated in interviews years later that law enforcement officers in Texas thanked him for this movie as it contributed to a decline in hitchhikers being picked up. Great reactions! I grew up with this movie, so I love watching first time reactions to it. If you haven’t already, check out John Carpenter’s The Thing (1982).

I saw this movie in a drive-in which was out in rural Long Island. Why my boyfriend picked that drive-in was so it would be a scary atmosphere. I was terrified & so was he. This movie still gives me tne creeps all these years later.

Excellent reaction as always. I love disturbing horror movies and I've only ever been able to sit through this one a couple of times because of how deeply disturbing it is, even by modern standards. This was released towards the end of the Vietnam war and can be seen in some ways as a metaphor for what many saw as the senselessness of that conflict. A lot of 70's horror movies had similar themes of apparently random, senseless violence, but this one took things to another level.

They do an amazing job of making everything you see feel dirty/uneasy - and a lot is left to the imagination - like we see the hook, we know where it's going, but we don't actually see it breaking the skin etc, which is something that can be overdone in later movies.

Yeah, in reality that hook would have slid up under the shoulder blade and the tip would have stuck out on the right side of her neck right through the middle of her collar bone; they couldn't show that.

And is all stressed out, he just kind if does what he can which is killing them...but its really all about "leatherface is just having a real bad day" lol

As low-budget and amateur as this film is, it is freaking terrifying! I can only imagine what it was like seeing it in theaters back in '74! One of the greatest horror films ever made! And no, it is not based on a true story, though this was the first horror film to use the "based on true events" gimmick.

Oh the truck driver who saved Sally kept running. So he got away.
The shot under Pam's butt was for 2 reasons: 1) it reduced the amount of coverage to 1 shot, and 2) the lens + low-angle allowed the house to grow and bulge as she got closer, which made the house look like it was looming over her. The cinematographer had 60 feet of track and realized that none of it would be seen, so that was less work.
Yeah, she was NOT a good runner. Marilyn Burns was so slow that Gunnar Hansen caught up to her while wearing lifts in his boots. That's why there's so many cuts in the chase: they had to keep moving the camera up and re-positioning them further apart so Gunnar wouldn't "catch" her before the end point. And she actually mildly sprained her ankle on the window jump which is why she's limping in the final chase.
