I started playing AoE in early 2000s with no internet connection, no English skills, no friends to learn from. I was just randomly clicking on the screen and learn. It took me literally a year to advance to the feudal age. Seeing that some people had build orders around the same time is crazy for me :D
Haha Amazing Story!! :D
First time I made 40 paladins and smashed the ai was epic. For me that was it. I was a 12 years old conqueror. ( Took me 3 years 😅)
My favorite strat was building towes all over my base and not killing the AI. The meat grinder satisfaction was so real
Who remembers "Maimin' Matty"? I was one of the first players he refined his monk rush strat on. 😂
some people have still been playing campaigns and ai for over 20 years so don't feel bad :)
Bruh in 2005 I was trying to make a wall across the entire map against the easy AI
😂🤣😅
Hhhh i remember it
I do it my self
😂
@@Klaus_Nobb
I love these kinda stories lol, I did it too 😂
11 I definitely did this too@@Klaus_Nobb
I would try to create a wall that gave me 2/3s of the map and then wait. If I didn't, I would restart.
In 2005 they had to adapt their 2nd boar lure timing to when the lag was lowest
Hahahah
A lot of 2005 build orders actually tell you to get loom before you go to get first boar.
@@flikwood411 Cause back then it would lag when you were bringing it in killing your vill.
If someone goes fast castle into eagles, in hidden cup V, Hera confirmed.
Instant mill after 3 houses? Dead giveaway.
do NOT stop producing Eagles
I remember playing the William Wallace campaign around this time. My cousin and I were to afraid to atack the English tower so we played the scenario for hours. I decided the best idea was to chop the trees with villagers and go for a sneak atack. My cousin discovered that you could fish in the game, and came to tell me while I was showering. Good times
❤
Just so you know: KLEW stood for "Kid's Lightning Eagle Warriors". Kid was the name of the player popularising it.
And selling stone was known back then. Sarazen Smush was actually one of the earliest strats developed.
Duno about this build but when conq expansion came out we doing 14 min castle age and not making mill before lumber .. duno wtf this build order .. 16 is very slow for fast castle in 2002 let alone 2005
It's actually "Kidd's", with two d's. And that's Mike Kidd, who was actually not just a player, but an Ensemble Studios employee, a major playtester for AoC. If I recall correctly he was the major mind behind AoC in general being a faster game than AoK, which made it significantly more popular as a multiplayer game.
I always played meta and tripped my friends who were bringing their PCs over for the LAN if I knew they were better at AoE2
Right - wasn't his nickname Captain_Kidd, or something along those lines? @@Avengerakos
I was looking for this comment telling me what KLEW means. Thanks.
AoK Heaven mentioned, I suddenly feel like I have one foot in the grave
Some of us who played back then still have those maps and scenarios saved on a disk from AoK heaven.
Remember guys, whatever happens, JUST KEEP PRODUCING EAGLE WARRIOR !
whatever happens, even playing spanish, JUST KEEP PRODUCING EAGLE WARRIOR
Me at Work be like
Oh, back in 2005 we were playing with standard LAN party build orders:
- all to straggler trees
- oops I'm pop capped, build a house
- oops I'm out of food, cannot train any more villagers, go to sheep, preferably 6 vills gathering from 3 dead sheep
- when straggler trees are done, build a lumber camp
- build a mill at the berries, don't bother with boar or deer
- send one to gold and one to stone, just to trickle in some resources for later
- stay at 15 pop (14 villagers) because we want feudal age, which requires food, and if we train more vills, it reduces our food, so stop producing vills until we reach feudal
- berries are out (were 3 minutes ago but we realize just now), so build 8 farms around the mill, because it surrounds the mill so nicely
- after reaching feudal, set up the economy which will carry use throughout the rest of the game: 10 on wood, 8 farms, 5 on gold, 5 on stone, and 2 extra villagers standing around in case we want to build something
- build one military building of each, and start making a mixed army. Build a castle with towers near the center of the map, and then slowly creep forwards with a mixed army, building towers every now and then along the way. No need for more villagers ever, because we have thousands of every resource, which is enough to replace any losses.
With this strategy we could absolutely dominate LAN parties back in the day! Good old times!
(I wonder what modern AI could Hera beat with this build order :))))
I could see my friends and I doing EXACTLY this!! This was the best thing I read today 😂😂😂
I can totaly see me doing most of this ^^
Yes!!!
totally relate to that, but I was better then most other players at these LAN parties. I didn't want the games to end at minute 25, so I played a black forest game like this:
Fast Imp into multiple TCs, claiming all resources on the map for myself and walling off a good chunk of it for myself and then chill and watch the others reach Imp at hour 2 or so. Then when the great ending battle took place, I crushed multiple opponents so quickly, that it became an "all vs 1" game vs me, which the others still lost 😀
Good memories^^
I once played against a good friend as Celts and in that game I only made Siegeram, nothing else, even deleting all vills to have 200 of them. Lets say it was funny to see that this train couldn't be stopped by him at any point and the disbelieve was very entertaining to me^^
Daut's 2006 Huns build will counter this strat.
Unfortunately, none still live who remember it. 😂
Calls for an old-school showmatch.
Except the lord himself of course 😂
@@aa01blue38 and capoch, i dont know if he was around post msn zone though
In 2005 I was still killing my boars with a small group of men at arms
I didn't even mess with the boars, too dangerous!
Or clubman! Lmao Aoe1
Kill every animal, lose every game
In 2005 i thought the online feature was a scam that would download vírus and destroy my pc
The timing with Spirit of the Law's new Mayan Overview 2024 update video... coincidence???
Feels like Spirit of the KLEW 😉
First game in pre hidden cup show match , one person is Mayans
But he went archers. Had he kept producing eagle warrior, maybe he would have won
Feel bad for your opponent.
It's like GenZ having parents from ww2 era.
He didn't know how brutally he was gonna get destroyed.
How does someone even counter this.
@@zachbalent1806 You should go fast castle yourself and try to get knights out I guess. This build was specifically made as a counter for old-school 'flushing', ie., Feudal age rush.
That was real fun! You could even have Daut in another feature, considering he's played all these strats himself.
I vividly remember this strat before 2005 being lethal. Back in those days early fighting was build an army, run in and fight theirs, if you lose go back and make more then send more in. Constant trickling in army and camping resources was pretty new. Palisades where basically never used like they are now.
Yeah, palisades were seen as being weak and a bad investment. The choice in most people's mind was no walls or stone walls.
I think Mayans would often go stone wall, since they have that -50% discount which goes a long way with 200 stone.
Keep in mind stone walls used to take 8 seconds to build and had 1800hp in the Feudal age. Nowadays they take 10 seconds to build and have 1080HP in Feudal. That's 225HP per second vs 108HP per second construction speed.
That's not 100% true, scout rush on the vills was there from the start
@@kobiromano6115 I'm not saying rushing didn't exist, it just was much slower and clunky. Hera actually did a video on why: th-cam.com/video/HiYFPOm_bLI/w-d-xo.html
This strat wasn't used in 1vs1 in 2005 in high level games. It was just a random build order at an old site
i played in 2005 XD, we sold stone yes, and luring deer totally no
because it wasnt possible they changed the game mechanic just like giving 4 free sheep at start of the game and moving boars we closer .. its dumbed down so modern player think they are better but the game is made easier
MSN Gaming Zone meta... those were the good days. 😢
I remember watching each of my three uncles (all different sides of a divorced family) play this game and it became such a core memory for like 5 and 6 year (2005-6) old me. I remember "painting" or coloring pictures of the end game population charts (I always played 8 player skirmishes (and lost of course lol)) for my parents and uncles and loving it so much.
You have to retry this strategy by following it again, step by step. If you have had a ram instead, you could have demolished the wall faster, also by garrison EWs inside the ram, you could have engaged into those archers without a hit, and pop out when the knights reach you. Denying that gold mine was key to prevent further knights. You played in an exquisite way, had a lot of fun with your comments.
Good old Klew! Some of the ancient aoe2 slang is so weird...
Btw in a klew you're supposed to stop making vills after reaching castle 👌😂
😂😂😂 wouldve never guessed but i suppose it makes sense
No walls. No one walled back then. This was peak skirm spear flush rushes so you could ignore it then kill it with 3 EW
I remember installing age of kings in 1999 in windows 98 PC.
Goodtimes!!!
You had to copy paste the crack file. Obviously the pirate version 😅
I Remember when I was born that year
same!! scorps with range upgrades everywhere lol
This looks like a 600 elo FC. Always a house ahead, straggler trees, mill deer (optional)! Never seen a 600 go 3 barracks eagles though!
if i see this in hidden cup 5 itll be hera confirmed
This was an incredibly enjoyable video. Let’s see more old strats!
100% agreement. Old Meta Mondays needs to be a thing
These old build recipes are so much fun. TH-cam is leading me from one to the next. Great insights on differences between modern builds and the ones we were raised on. Thx.
So whenever you see a player keeping his eagle production up and splitting groups of three - Hera confirmed
This threw me way back. I started plaing AoK from the very beginning in 99 and I had 3 replays of The_Sheriff and maimin_matty. One of these replays was a boom strat for Goth, which I learned and crushed everyone on LANs. Tbh, it became quite boring to always have these games go one sided, to a point where I played against multiple opponents at once. Of course I wasn't that good at the game, because I pretty much only played boom into mass Champs with either Goth or Tutons back then, but there weren't many good players around me at that time and I didn't have internet, so I couldn't compete online. The only one that was as good, if not better then me, was my best friend back then and one of us had to play at the opposite team every time we played together, because it would even become more lobsided, if we played together 😀 thanks for the reminder my friend, this felt great and it was a good time for me 🙂
When I started following high level AoE 2 in 2012 this was still around, but changed a little bit, I believe. I'm pretty sure people did something very similar, but 1-2 minutes earlier to Castle Age.
But it surely was even stronger back then, because walling was cheaper and faster and you didn't have Eagle Scouts, but Warriors immediately.
Good stuff! One stupid build I've been playing with is a Poles Fast Feudal TRush into FC. Basically FF then put all your vils on stone/wood/towers, then food. Build towers and buy your way to castle. So far it's been only semi-successful at lower ELO's, but I gotta say, it's been a ton of fun!
9:45
I recall a Spirit of the Law video where he was talking about Saracens. He went over an ancient Saracen Fast Castle build from like 2002 and I recall it being mentioned there, specifically because of the market bonus, but I don't know if this was widely done on other Civs.
That was great, they really were cookin back then
No school like the oldschool
You found a truly ancient scroll of wisdom there.
This was actually so fire
Loved it, please do more!
That's epic!! I love the 3 groups idea! Timelessly valid.
It absolutely recks all of the AI as well (even the playermade custom AIs)
This was like reviving a t-rex lol
"Groups of 3 groups of 3!" - absolutely zero groups of 3 seen 11
Luring deer was an insane 0.1% technique back then
no it wasnt the game did not have it programmed in for them to go to the town center they only ran away from units not towards the tc this crap has been added in new versions of the game. Just like there was never 4 free sheep right at our tc u had to actually find them very fast or get behind and boars were a lot further out .. maybe hera actually played the origonal game he would know. This is not the origonal game there have been 2 more version since the origonal . HD edition and This definitive edition are not the same game as the 1998 release.
Hey man I'm a longtime viewer... keep up the awesome creativity with your content. You are definitely one of the, if not the best fun aoe2 gameplay and content creator out there in 2024.
That was amazing. Can't wait to see the Power KLEW on the ladder
The early mill is hilarious! I like the idea of getting 4 to 6 vils on it though and having hte berries finish by 10:00 or something. That way you don't need to defend it later and could wall it out.
Loved this vid! Nili has a AoE II History playlist which is interesting to watch!
Very nice! Do more old build orders. It's just so entertaining to see other builds than the common ones. You're so used to the modern meta that these new ones are just strange when you see them.
Watching your reaction playing these live had me in stiches was a good laugh.
❤ Thank you for sharing this on yt:)
Hera top video as always love your content❤
Most of the eagle strats where much faster at that time. They where build to reach castle around 13:30.
Source?
@@EliasHasle Have played the original game so experience from playing at that time.
exactly I duno why he talks so much shit about did they know to sell stone did they know how to garriosn archers so annoying. Does he even realise this is NOT even the same game as 1999 .. in 1999 you didnt get 4 free sheep at the tc the boars were further away and much harder to find and game did not have all the time saving way point clicks ... etc .. This game has been dumbed down and made easier ... Without pushing deer in this current version of AOE2 you should easily be able get 13 min caslte age and pumping eagles ..
I want to see you and Viper do an "All Tech" series next.
Loving the new theme days Hera
Careful Hera, you'll reduce the incentive to subscribe for your build orders!
One of the best videos of Hera :D
love the content
Man this is so good content
Top content
DEFINITELY enjoyed it. Congrats for the idea.
Next you should do the original smush, sarracen monk rush
I tried it once, 18 pop castle age with sarracen full monk converting. Only worked in npl though
"Groups of 3, free elo for thee"
- 2005, probably
I have been playing since 1999 and i approve this build.
Loved this!
More of this pls
Dude I wanna run this back! We gotta do this again. That build was crazy man.
Actually this strat was batter in 2005, because you had eagle warrior right away, white now you start with eagle scout
That was awesome to watch
15, 16 minute castles times in 2005???? Scary build
14 minute castle in 1999 was normal for fast eagle rush a 16 min castle age was a noob build order.
To be honest, this would have been an odd build order back in 2005 😅
Yes. Fast castle died to feudal agro even back then.
So awesome
2005 build order funny as hell 😂 love it!
I think 2 large changes affected your build:
1) walls were significantly nerfed as a DE patch - they got more expensive and slower to build. SOTL says including villager time, each tile of wall costs 5 resources - that’s why you were short on wood for barracks3
2) they made eagle warriors directly in castle age, whereas you need to click the eagle warrior upgrade to upgrade them from Eagle Scout. (Just a resource diff - time wise, pre making Eagle Scouts in feudal is really powerful)
Hera with the amazing content again
I was one year old when this strat came out
My dad was perfecting his strategy to beat 1v7 expert AI on The Conquerors
Old school always works
I LOVE IT
in the past, we only start attacking in Castle age, Huns was the King at that time, Castle age at 15:30, 3 knights kill everyone
Nah, I always died to flushes or trushes Arabia in 2002, because all I knew was fast castle😂
Thx hera!!!
20 minute games in 2005. This is what they were up to!
Liked commented and subscribed 😂 good game
also no damage to chinese eco until castle which nornally is pretty scary! That wait to castle when youre facing someone same elo can be hard with this one as they couldve gotten in. Also im sure its ok to lure deers now given it was due to lag issues back then it wasnt popular
Lag, also the micro back then wasn't anywhere near how it is today, which was also due to lag but in general a lot has changed.
That was impressive.
inb4 this was a daut posting from his alt
here is a petition for you to challenge Daut to early aoe build orders
amazazing
loved that
Love it. Give it a go
Wizard was right Hera and his spreadsheets, EGALOS
Why did you break into my house and photograph my computer for your thumbnail?
😂😂
2005 Hera is better than 2023 players haha Well, 2005 Hera will 2023 skills Hera. But playing according to the 2005 strategy only. Amazing. For sure I'd like to see more content like this :)
Wow hera made it work. Hilarious
Well technically you didn't create a single Eagle WARRIOR :P Still fun vid :D
I would like to also see modern takes on those builds 🙂
I would love to see more of these. Are there any build orders from the dark ages(1999) still around?
That was so good! lol Please more old strats. I don't care if its bad.
I played with the first version of AEO 2 back in 1999, with no Internet connection. I learnt my first build order a couple of years ago :) before that, it was all fun. Build orders and you-tuber destroyed this game and yet...here I am...
Man 16 min castles were the standard back in the good ole days. But watching this vid and how it went here, it felt so slow. I went 「oh man I wish we get there on time」 that whole entire time I was watching you trying to get to castle.
hahaaa oldschoold classa 😎😁
Thats why DauT is the best player, he was already at a time into the game when the best strategy was developed
i actually think that if this bo builds the lumber camp before the mill and goes for 2 vills instead of 3 in feudal, it is actually viable. Though you have to survive their feudal preassure, like hera did with his walling
“Hera keep making eagles!”
What a noob 11
Haha a very fun game!
