- Learn how to analyse a text by looking at the composer's use of syntax. When we say "syntax", we are mainly talking about lengths of sentences (short, sharp or truncated vs. elongated), which are often predicated on the particular message that a composer is trying to communicate. If a poet, for example, uses long, drawn-out (elongated) sentences, which may even have the effect of making the reader feel breathless, perhaps this is intended to convey a sense of monotony, boredom or futility. Truncated sentences (which have essentially been chopped up into little pieces) often evoke a sense of urgency or tension. Ultimately, however, you must read the substance of the text to understand why a particular style of syntax has been used (there's often several feasible interpretations!).

Thank you for this thorough explanation it was very helpful!
Thanks for letting us know Georgia, glad it was helpful!
Say we have a 3-4 marker (not too much space) and there is an elongated sentence in the text that we want to talk about. How do we actually quote that without having to write out the full sentence?
Good Q - you use an ellipsis ("...") to cut out words in the middle. For example "I went to school,..., and then finally went home."
@@jeddle Ohhh i see, the markers wouldn't question if its an elongated sentence or not right? like if I do the ellipsis and say that the technique was an elongated sentence, they should accept it right?
@@amulticulturaldinosaur3171 Correct.
yea
This is still confusing
What exactly isn't making sense for you?
this explanation of sentence structure is incorrect
Thanks for the feedback Michelle - How so?
