A military commander loyal to deposed Cambodian First Prime Minister Norodom Ranariddh vowed on Friday to fight the new regime in Cambodia with the support of the Khmer Rouge.
General Nhek Bunchhay - who fled Phnom Penh following the July 5th coup - also claimed to have 40-thousand soldiers.
While the military conflict threatened to escalate in Cambodia, foreign ministers from neighbouring Southeast Asian countries pledged to help the warring sides resolve the conflict.
This armoured personnel carrier (APC) belongs to troops backing Hun Sen and his Cambodian People's Party (CPP).
CPP troops in northern Cambodia fire sporadically at royalist forces loyal to Hun Sen's rival, Prince Norodom Ranariddh and his Funcinpec party.
But there is no return of fire from the Funcinpec side.
Nevertheless CPP forces continued to bring in more reinforcements to the Samrong area on Friday.
They appear to be forcing the Funcinpec soldiers into a final stand at the Thai border.
While they wait for the next confrontation, CPP soldiers live off the land one kilometre outside Samrong.
Now that the fighting has died down, residents are returning to the town - about seventy people were seen going back to their homes.
Some of them claim they were forced to leave the Samrong area with retreating Funcinpec soldiers and Khmer Rouge forces.
They told CPP soldiers that there were only 400 Funcinpec troops who were low on ammunition.
However, top Funcinpec commander, General Nhek Bunchhay told reporters in O'Smach his soldiers could fight many months on existing supplies.

The general also disputed reports that Samrong had fallen to Hun Sen's forces.

"Much of area is under Funcinpec's control. But we have plans to capture the main towns."

The general said Samrong would become the base of the resistance, which some observers argue has little chance of success against the superior military power of Hun Sen.
Nhek Bunchhay also claimed to have been in touch with some elements of the highly fractionalised Khmer Rouge and that they would fight alongside Funcinpec against Hun Sen.
At the annual ASEAN ministerial meeting in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysian Foreign Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi said it was finally agreed by all sides that there was a role for ASEAN to play in resolving Cambodia's political conflict.

"I think it is very important for ASEAN to take, we have agreed to undertake to restore political stability in Cambodia. We have to be sure about this."

Thai Foreign Minister Prachuab Chaiyasarn and Philippine Foreign Minister Domingo Siazon were just two ASEAN officials who had been trying to mediate among the two sides earlier this week.
It was much rougher going for Cambodians at a Thai border checkpoint.
Around 20-thousand refugees massed on the Thai-Cambodian border on Thursday, hoping to escape fierce fighting in their war-ravaged country.
The outpost is under the control of Funcinpec.
From here, the swarms of Cambodians were evacuated to a more secure location behind O'Smach by troops loyal to ousted premier Prince Norodom Ranariddh.
About 100 soldiers patrolled the area to ensure the safety of the evacuees.
