As I said earlier, *the most amazing edition of "La Ronde Infernale".* The one that saw the debut at Le Mans of the 917, the incredible record-timing effort of Stommelen to push it to the limits that unmature beast, the constance of Elford that crubled few hours to the end and opened the curtain to the most unbelelivable duel in endurance history between Herrmann's 908 Langheck and Ickx's John Wyer's GT40. And I must thank you so so much for this rare footoges of the April tests as well, with the Matra MS640, the Alfa 33/3 that never ran after the death of Bianchi, and the experimental under-tail fins of the long-tailed 917s.
Monsieur Pescarolo kept his Centurion guardian angel on his toes on that one 😯.
This is a significant edition of the race. Willie Mairesse had been seriously injured in the 1968 race when he crashed on Le ligne droite des Hunaudieres whilst struggling with his door which he hadn't secured properly in the rush to get away at the start I believe. It was one of the reasons Jackie Ickx made his protest walk to his car at the start. He started last, but still won the race. The British driver John Wolfe crashed at Mason Blanche in his 917 in this very race at the start and was thrown from the car having not done up his seat belts to save time and later died of his injuries.

I fully understand how one could get sucked in and left hopelessly addicted by that 'business' ... as the introduction prooves .. otherwise I just line up with the comments . only one more thing, when Jacky Ickx reovertook Herrmann that last round and thundered the same old chariot to another victory I had damp eyes in awe 🌷:)

The film of the test day and Matra manufacture, was released as a freebie CD about ten years ago,with a French classic car magazine,can't remember what the magazine was called, bought it on holiday in Royan in August of that year.
Experiments with bulges around the 917 wheels continued at Spa.

I do like the old Ford muscle cars but looking at these European V8's 50 years ago! make the Ford Windsors and big blocks look like cave man tech. Winning or not.
