Correction: Freud was raised Galician Jewish in Austria, but later joined a German Jewish cultural association.
Edit: including some extra points in here since there's a lot of talk in the comment.
    - Freud came to his theories through years of talk therapy with many clients, all of whom would recount memories and fantasies under the influence of hypnosis. What he describes are not conscious thought processes, but unconscious drivers that shape human behavior and identity under the surface. He believed these processes occurred so early in childhood (ages 1 to 6) that people had no way of accessing those repressed memories by the time they were grown besides hypnotic influence. His original theory from hearing people's unconscious testimonials was that there was a massive widespread conspiracy of CSA happening to toddlers, but soon he realized that the unconscious mind can't tell real events from imagined ones.
    - Fun fact! Testimonial under hypnosis is also why the satanic panic occurred, because people thought they had repressed memories of ritual CSA that in the end turned out to be fabricated, nothing more than a nightmare/fantasy. This actually ruined the lives of some innocent people, and is largely why people are so sceptical of psychoanalysis today.
    - The Electra Complex is a Jungian concept, NOT a Freudian one. It defeats the purpose of the Oedipal complex since it is typically the mother who is the primary caretaker of a baby and thus occupies a certain space in the baby's mind.
    - Freud's research and theories were specific to his time, place and culture, and would not necessarily be applicable today. He laid the basis for psychoanalytical practice and theory but is otherwise obsolete.

another fascinating example of clay's oral fixation is the way he talks about losing his job and going into poverty to orel in nesting. he could've told orel that there will be no more toys, no more new bibles, whatever he wanted. but he specifically calls out eating, and *specifically* calls it "that thing you do with your mouth and throat". it's such bizarre phrasing, and i can't really see any other explanation for it other than "it's a funny way to phrase it".

Im actually taking a psychology of religion class! Understandably Freud got made fun of a lot.
Feel free to correct me if I get anything wrong! I'm mostly pulling from slides here.
Some interesting things Freud has to say about religion:
-it's suspected that his Catholic Nanny was planning on kidnapping him as she was fired for stealing from the home she worked for but it was almost entirely Frued's things
-In his book "totem and taboo" he argued that a 'primal father' was a 'totem' that the religious community worshipped but that the group eventually murdered him and let their guilt and fear deified this primal father into their god and that this is the origin of all gods.
-in "Moses and monotheism" he wrote an alternate history where the Jews eventually murdered Moses (making him a primal father) and that the name Yahweh came from a "local volcano god"????

Ah... I wonder if Clay's mother actually was athiest at some point then when meeting Arthur ! That or maybe agonistic. I wonder, when she had all those miscarriages, that she was so broken hearted that she had to beg the universe or God to help give birth to Clay. And then Clay happened and it just cemented her into being more religious ... Damn.. That would make so much sense. It would also make sense more why Arthur would resent her too. Not only for her being so obsessive over Clay , but, he probably felt betrayed on a fundamental level and now he was "stuck". Back then it was pretty rare to even hear about divorce. I can only imagine how hard it would be to justify simply falling out of favor for each others beliefs . People even stay together when there's infidelity . So, it must of been even rarer to hear people split out of life style differences

Actually on the Censordoll manipulating Clay through her doll thing vs Clay having responsibility of his own actions. I like to think of it more in a Biblical way. In how the Bible describes demons influencing our actions and making them sound appealing. Or a more specific example the devil serpant in the garden of eden. Eve had free will, and betraying Gods trust was her choice. It also ties into Clays speech a little about how Alcohol tells him things that are pretty little lies that stopped working. Like if you look at Censordoll with the lens of her being a demon, her promising appealing disguised moral christian values that are actually just witchcraft and sometimes just evil.... Connecting her to a demon influence makes a lot of sense to me

Also i kinda think while clay ignores his father as a child his father doesn't put in the effort t9 be positive and nice to his kid, to grab him by the shoulders as hes following his mom around and go heyy slow down sport, whats the rush. Oh ur helping your mom with the clothes, good kid. Like he had a responsibility as a parent to care for clay as a child b4 he killed his mother but he cant, hes jealous and resentful and him not doting over his son and heing able to talk with her about how well hes doing and what he did today kinda drives them further apart, as he shows very little interest in the child she tried for so many years to have. And clay has no reason to come up to his father for affection cuz hes never shown thats an option, n then that just leads inti what yall said abt him only showing love for his wife and that making clay believe love is finite
Anyway could b very wrong but yall made me think this so yuh

Wow. I know Freud is outdated, but like…the father aspect of the Oedipal complex is so real for me. I’m a trans man, and as such I looked up to my father as a little boy thinking I wanted to be like him. The fact that we have so little in common, where we couldn’t really connect over manhood due to his transphobia and misogyny, thus resulting in a form of castration, is the thing that hits home the most. My father’s also a narcissist, diagnosed by my therapist, and obviously he resists the diagnosis as most narcissists do. That alone drives a wedge between us, but since I can’t identify with my father in how to be a man I’m pretty much starting over. As a fun side effect I’m much closer with my mom since she’s a safe space, my first real one, and I think that resonates with a lot of people - not to mention she mastered the art of gentle parenting in its most genuine form with my sister and me. Because of how she raised us my sister and I are much more in tune with our inner selves than he is.
Of course Freud would probably equate my issues to “penis envy” which I don’t have, and I’d dismiss the accusation since he reminds me a lot of my father regarding my masculinity.
I think the chicken slit thing is most fascinating aspect of the show because it highlights how f’ed up all the men in Moralton are. It’s likely an animation thing, but I have to appreciate that little detail.

This Freudian read is interesting on at least two fronts.
1.) questions i never would've thought to ask are being examined
2.) questions i never would've thought to ask are being examined
Frued seems to be so much weirder than i ever thought. Tbh Hearing more of his theories on human psychology really bizarrely contextualizes the snippets that are well known.
Cause the idea that he said all boys lust for their mothers is already an offputting statement. Its a statement i think nearly all people reasonably recoil at.
But to know that its nestled between at least a dozen other equally offputting theories makes you sit with the fact that its not a one off. This wasnt a weird joke, it wasnt just the effects of him overthinking a theater production. The man legitamitly had very strange thoughts about sexuality and gender that make people squirm. And he went about his day to day life thinking intently about how the people around him were dealing with traumas of not having what their dad does.
I know I never thought about my parents genitals as a kid but the fact that freud did, seems to have consumed him in an odd way. I cant even tell if hes trying to give rational to his own intrusive thoughts.
im almost afraid to know how he explains trans people existing bc his explanation for gay people was alreasy so specific i know he ruminated on it for at least a few months
