Part 20 Unlike his brothers, Hadrian had not decided to retreat. Donatio and his 6th company were making their way back to friendly lines with a horde of civilians in tow, and he knew full well that they could use all the cover he and his executioners could provide. Avriol had also taken his 1st back to Imperial lines, which left Hadrian's kill squad one of the only available hunting forces out in the field. They were lying in wait when word reached them. Asphel was the first to pick up the distress signal. A few encoded lines sent out to anyone in range with access to the Blades' chapter communications. Hadrian almost snarled when he deciphered the codes "Drenmar is asking for help. 18th is cornered, they're not armed for a direct engagement." His Mortan weighed in quickly, cautiously suggesting the thing that they were unwilling to even think "Their reported position is bad. Reason says to leave them to their fate." There was a reason Hadrian's right hand spoke those words. He was not trying to caution his brothers away from the fight. He was giving these words a voice as a challenge. A challenge to the High Executioner to prove him wrong. Normally, it took more than that to goad Hadrian into striking, his reputation for calculated and level headed warfare was well earned. This time he decided to humour his brother's taunts. "When has reason ever stopped us? These scouts are the future of our chapter, and we will not leave them to die. Not while we still have breath left in our lungs and fire in our souls." Several of his brothers smiled at these words as they put their helmets back on, preparing themselves for the fight to come. The only sign the Mortan gave of his own impatience was the fact that his hands had not stopped playing around with his plasma pistols. Some would have asked what difference six men could make. Those men usually did not have long to live after they did. Drenmar placed his shots methodically, covering the Reiver squads in their advance. Hyperion had taken his Reivers to the front lines, using their knives and pistols to keep the orks off their more vulnerable brothers. There were no grenades left, and ammo was running dangerously low. Soon Drenmar would have to rely on his own knife. The thought had barely crossed his mind, when his weapon responded to him pulling the trigger with an empty click. The old Lord-Captain swore as he drew his knife and mag-locked his empty gun to his belt "Uthran, how are those reinforcements coming along?" His second lieutenant took a moment to answer, having to beat back one of the orks that had made it further than the others "1st is engaged in defence of the Imperial lines, 3rd is holding the reactors in case of a greenskin counter assault... 6th is escorting civilians back to friendly lines and... no word on the execut-" The report was cut off by a pained grunt when the ork managed to overpower the lieutenant. Drenmar did not have to look to know the results. Uthran would not halt his report unless he was dead. "Hyperion, we're falling back. Get your Reivers out of there." Hyperion's voice sounded strained, the man was clearly in pain as he spoke "We can cover your retreat, my Lord." "Negative, get out of there, now." "They'll catch up to us in no time, someone has to-" "I am old, not feeble. Go." It was only natural. He was old, very old. The men under his command were the youngest active soldiers of the chapter. It was only right that he would give his life for theirs. His time was long past, so they better pick up after him. His train of thought was interrupted when the Green Tide suddenly let up, leaving only a few stragglers for the Reivers to clean up. The pain in Hyperion's voice made way for surprise as he approached his Lord "I could have sworn there were more of them..." Drenmar nodded "There were." "Then how-?" "Executioners." Three mines, one remotely detonated explosive and a few shouted challenges. It had not taken the executioners a lot to turn these orks around. Asphel and Durak were holding the line in clear sight of the horde, drawing all the attention towards them. The beasts could of course not ignore such a challenge. They almost trampled each other to get to these two new challengers, who clearly provided more sport than the tired and wounded members of 18th company. In their haste, they forgot to mind several details, however. For one, neither executioner carried explosives on them, nor did they have a hand free with which to detonate any. Hadrian simply smirked as he slipped through the horde of orks, stopping only rarely to slit the throat of one of their leaders with his claws, or if he wanted to incite infighting, a weapon he found hanging from a greenskin belt. None of the beasts ever noticed he was there of course. If one did look carefully, they might have seen a shadow moving past them, but caught in their frenzy as they were, Hadrian was met with no resistance. The other executioners did not share their Lord's aptitude for the psychic arts, but their hit and run strikes made it impossible to pin them down. It did not take long for the frenzy amongst the orks to make way for confusion, then blind panic as they suddenly found their back lines invaded by the remnants of the 18th. When they ran, the orks did so with the laughter of the executioners in their ears, followed by the cheers of the scouts of the 18th. It took a while after the battle for Lord-Captain Verdin Drenmar and High-Executioner Hadrian Thall to meet face to face. Hadrian had decided to rest his legs for a moment, sitting on a pile of rubble beside a beast that had no doubt been the leader of the attack. Drenmar simply looked over his old student, noticing the blood on his armor, the faded paint and several dents that had been made by luckier orks. Hadrian was the first to speak "Last I checked, you were not this brazen. Why were you all the way out here?" Drenmar shrugged, then sat down beside the younger man "Orders. We were marking targets for annihilation." Hadrian almost laughed at the ridiculous notion "Annihilation? I know we pushed the greenskins back on several fronts, but we don't have the manpower for a swift annihilation. Pray tell, what targets did you mark?" Drenmar checked his bolter, nodding in appreciation when Hadrian gave him a fresh magazine for the weapon "The three strongholds they are using as staging points for the invasion. If we wipe them out the threat can be left to the supporting Imperial Guard forces awaiting deployment in orbit. They'd be left to round up a few straggler groups, and we would be free to move on." Now the High-Executioner laughed wryly "Right, and who would strike that blow? Your men are at the end of their supplies, 3rd is pinned down and depleted, 6th is babysitting and 1st is too far away to make it there. My men can do much, but this is too much ground to cover for six men." Drenmar shook his head "The Titans of Legio Infernum made planetfall, about an hour ago. We marked their targets, and the God-Engines will walk. The war is over." Hadrian's laugh sounded a lot more genuine now "So we are homeward bound then?" The old Lord-Captain nodded "We survived. The bodies of our fallen are being recovered and we are going home soon. Victory it is." Hadrian felt a weight fall off his shoulders, yet his mood darkened at those words "Not all of us survived." Drenmar sighed, for a moment the mask of the Lord of the 18th slipped, revealing a tired old man "And as long as there are still enemies to face, I'm afraid it will always be that way." Hadrian looked at the body of the dead ork "Such is our duty." He sprang to his feet "Get your men to safety, they've earned the rest. I'll round up mine and see if we can find some stragglers to kill." With those words the men parted again. Drenmar simply sighed as he recomposed himself . He knew he wouldn't see the executioners at the victory celebration. It was not their style. He and his former pupil would meet agin when they shared another warzone. That was more their style. Neither of them knew however that that would be sooner than anyone could have imagined. Though the world they would fight on would be different. And the cost would be higher.

Part 20
Unlike his brothers, Hadrian had not decided to retreat.
Donatio and his 6th company were making their way back to friendly lines with a horde of civilians in tow, and he knew full well that they could use all the cover he and his executioners could provide. Avriol had also taken his 1st back to Imperial lines, which left Hadrian's kill squad one of the only available hunting forces out in the field.
They were lying in wait when word reached them.
Asphel was the first to pick up the distress signal. A few encoded lines sent out to anyone in range with access to the Blades' chapter communications.
Hadrian almost snarled when he deciphered the codes "Drenmar is asking for help. 18th is cornered, they're not armed for a direct engagement."
His Mortan weighed in quickly, cautiously suggesting the thing that they were unwilling to even think "Their reported position is bad. Reason says to leave them to their fate."
There was a reason Hadrian's right hand spoke those words. He was not trying to caution his brothers away from the fight. He was giving these words a voice as a challenge. A challenge to the High Executioner to prove him wrong.
Normally, it took more than that to goad Hadrian into striking, his reputation for calculated and level headed warfare was well earned.
This time he decided to humour his brother's taunts.
"When has reason ever stopped us? These scouts are the future of our chapter, and we will not leave them to die. Not while we still have breath left in our lungs and fire in our souls."
Several of his brothers smiled at these words as they put their helmets back on, preparing themselves for the fight to come. The only sign the Mortan gave of his own impatience was the fact that his hands had not stopped playing around with his plasma pistols.
Some would have asked what difference six men could make.
Those men usually did not have long to live after they did.
Drenmar placed his shots methodically, covering the Reiver squads in their advance.
Hyperion had taken his Reivers to the front lines, using their knives and pistols to keep the orks off their more vulnerable brothers.
There were no grenades left, and ammo was running dangerously low. Soon Drenmar would have to rely on his own knife.
The thought had barely crossed his mind, when his weapon responded to him pulling the trigger with an empty click.
The old Lord-Captain swore as he drew his knife and mag-locked his empty gun to his belt "Uthran, how are those reinforcements coming along?"
His second lieutenant took a moment to answer, having to beat back one of the orks that had made it further than the others "1st is engaged in defence of the Imperial lines, 3rd is holding the reactors in case of a greenskin counter assault... 6th is escorting civilians back to friendly lines and... no word on the execut-"
The report was cut off by a pained grunt when the ork managed to overpower the lieutenant. Drenmar did not have to look to know the results. Uthran would not halt his report unless he was dead.
"Hyperion, we're falling back. Get your Reivers out of there."
Hyperion's voice sounded strained, the man was clearly in pain as he spoke "We can cover your retreat, my Lord."
"Negative, get out of there, now."
"They'll catch up to us in no time, someone has to-"
"I am old, not feeble. Go."
It was only natural. He was old, very old. The men under his command were the youngest active soldiers of the chapter. It was only right that he would give his life for theirs. His time was long past, so they better pick up after him.
His train of thought was interrupted when the Green Tide suddenly let up, leaving only a few stragglers for the Reivers to clean up.
The pain in Hyperion's voice made way for surprise as he approached his Lord "I could have sworn there were more of them..."
Drenmar nodded "There were."
"Then how-?"
"Executioners."
Three mines, one remotely detonated explosive and a few shouted challenges.
It had not taken the executioners a lot to turn these orks around. Asphel and Durak were holding the line in clear sight of the horde, drawing all the attention towards them. The beasts could of course not ignore such a challenge. They almost trampled each other to get to these two new challengers, who clearly provided more sport than the tired and wounded members of 18th company.
In their haste, they forgot to mind several details, however. For one, neither executioner carried explosives on them, nor did they have a hand free with which to detonate any.
Hadrian simply smirked as he slipped through the horde of orks, stopping only rarely to slit the throat of one of their leaders with his claws, or if he wanted to incite infighting, a weapon he found hanging from a greenskin belt.
None of the beasts ever noticed he was there of course. If one did look carefully, they might have seen a shadow moving past them, but caught in their frenzy as they were, Hadrian was met with no resistance.
The other executioners did not share their Lord's aptitude for the psychic arts, but their hit and run strikes made it impossible to pin them down.
It did not take long for the frenzy amongst the orks to make way for confusion, then blind panic as they suddenly found their back lines invaded by the remnants of the 18th.
When they ran, the orks did so with the laughter of the executioners in their ears, followed by the cheers of the scouts of the 18th.
It took a while after the battle for Lord-Captain Verdin Drenmar and High-Executioner Hadrian Thall to meet face to face.
Hadrian had decided to rest his legs for a moment, sitting on a pile of rubble beside a beast that had no doubt been the leader of the attack.
Drenmar simply looked over his old student, noticing the blood on his armor, the faded paint and several dents that had been made by luckier orks.
Hadrian was the first to speak "Last I checked, you were not this brazen. Why were you all the way out here?"
Drenmar shrugged, then sat down beside the younger man "Orders. We were marking targets for annihilation."
Hadrian almost laughed at the ridiculous notion "Annihilation? I know we pushed the greenskins back on several fronts, but we don't have the manpower for a swift annihilation. Pray tell, what targets did you mark?"
Drenmar checked his bolter, nodding in appreciation when Hadrian gave him a fresh magazine for the weapon "The three strongholds they are using as staging points for the invasion. If we wipe them out the threat can be left to the supporting Imperial Guard forces awaiting deployment in orbit. They'd be left to round up a few straggler groups, and we would be free to move on."
Now the High-Executioner laughed wryly "Right, and who would strike that blow? Your men are at the end of their supplies, 3rd is pinned down and depleted, 6th is babysitting and 1st is too far away to make it there. My men can do much, but this is too much ground to cover for six men."
Drenmar shook his head "The Titans of Legio Infernum made planetfall, about an hour ago. We marked their targets, and the God-Engines will walk. The war is over."
Hadrian's laugh sounded a lot more genuine now "So we are homeward bound then?"
The old Lord-Captain nodded "We survived. The bodies of our fallen are being recovered and we are going home soon. Victory it is."
Hadrian felt a weight fall off his shoulders, yet his mood darkened at those words "Not all of us survived."
Drenmar sighed, for a moment the mask of the Lord of the 18th slipped, revealing a tired old man "And as long as there are still enemies to face, I'm afraid it will always be that way."
Hadrian looked at the body of the dead ork "Such is our duty."
He sprang to his feet "Get your men to safety, they've earned the rest. I'll round up mine and see if we can find some stragglers to kill."
With those words the men parted again.
Drenmar simply sighed as he recomposed himself . He knew he wouldn't see the executioners at the victory celebration. It was not their style. He and his former pupil would meet agin when they shared another warzone. That was more their style.
Neither of them knew however that that would be sooner than anyone could have imagined.
Though the world they would fight on would be different.
And the cost would be higher.
