    I overseeded some Sunn Hemp into some paddocks. Let my sheep work the seed in for 2 days. I got a better stand this way than I did with a no till drill. Its seems to thrive in the straw from annual ryegrass and cereal rye.

      Brilliant idea. I can’t afford a no till drill. I’ll try your method - I really appreciate the feedback. I’m have a great week.

      @@StewartFarmApiary I rented the no till drill from the local NRCS. It cost $229 to drill 19 acres.
      I noticed that every spot where I grew Hairy Vetch the Sunn Hemp is massive compared to the rest of the field. Stems, Leaves' and the diameter of the plant twice as big!

    I think I brought in vetch when I put down a bunch of hay when I first moved to this property (in hopes I’d get some grass growing) and my sheep go crazy for that vetch! Hope I see it again next year.

      Mine love it too. I like the vetch for the nitrogen fix as well as the protein. It does the job!

    How do you have no weeds ?????

    • @StewartFarmApiary
      @StewartFarmApiary  8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I do have weeds but at a very small amount. When you allow the grasses to grow tall and not be overgrazed they will smother out the weeds. Most of the time, weeds are from bad management of pastures and they are all that will grow. Hope this helps. Have a great week.

      @@StewartFarmApiary might have cut the pasture too low one time before I got animals … so I can’t over seed on the pasture now? You think it will grow through the weeds? I have a lot of trefoil growing but the grass native grass hasn’t fully come up yet and it’s April

      @@AnimeDreamingEcchi Look at a few things first - Have you done a soil sample and if so, did you adjust the PH levels to get things where they need to be.
      My approach is to overseed directly over the existing grass with an annual until the other grass comes on strong. I don't know your region, but right now is tricky because we need the last frost to be done and the soil temps above 65 constantly to seed a warm season pasture. Once temps get warm enough I would suggest planting sorghum sudan grass. You will have to keep livestock off the pasture you seed but it will grow fast and also allow for biomass if you don't over graze. I have sectioned off my sheep in another pasture during this time and just spent the money on hay to allow the pastures to grow. I hope this helps.

    Have you heard of any issues with red clover causing infertility in ewes? I’ve seen mixed reviews on it and most claim white clover to be better. We are trying to decide what we want to use. We are located in NW Alabama and enjoy your videos very much.

      Thank you for your response. I have never had an issue. I have landino clover in our pastures ( well everywhere). We do t load up on the clover too much but it is in every pasture. I’ve not had any issues or heard much about the fertility problems. You will have me researching deeper now. I think any clover is good as long as I’m moderation like all things.
      Where is NW Alabama? We are always looking for people that also have sheep in the area.

      Candy, what are you grazing in NW Alabama? I’m in Blount county alabama and wondering if I can grow orchard grass here. I’m like right on the borderline for orchard grass I think but no one around here has it that I know of… would be some great sheep pasture. I guess I could just grow rye grass though
