  • Some roses are not equipped to deal with harsh winters. Gardeners can be stubborn and can still decide to grow those beauties in pots. Moving roses into unheated garage can be an ideal solutions for potted roses.

I've finally given up on roses in pots. I still have two in front of my house but they're going to be planted in the garden soon. I haven't got enough strength to move such heavy pots myself and I don't want my husband to put out his back. At some point one must decide what one can and cannot do any more. Greetings from central Europe :-)

You are right, those pots are heavy! Maybe you can go for very hardy roses and they can overwinter outside in the pot... Just a suggestion. Happy gardening!

@@OlgaCarmody Thank you for the suggestion! I doubt they're going to survive minus 20 Celsius which we still get occasionally. So, goodbye to the rose display in front of my house. Anyway, I've got over 140 roses in the ground :-)

What an extremely helpful video Olga! I dragged my first potted roses in the garage a few winters ago and only found out from you that in my zone I didn't have to. Wish I knew that before we did :) PS: Loved the way this one is filmed with you speaking and the running film to the side. Excellent!

Is it possible to over winter my potted rose in my garage with no windows? The temperature stays at about freezing to a bit above but it is dark.

Yes, it is possible. Just make sure you check on those pots regularly to make sure that no diseases and infestations develop.

So you completely defoliate the rose and spray all the canes after the first frost? Do you saturate it? Also my garage is unheated but does not have any windows so the plant will be in the dark - zone 6b.
I hope you will do a followup video actually showing you doing these steps. Great topic, thanks!
