I always interpreted it as there’s trouble in the relationship. Some nights - if he stays over, they’re going to fight. But if he leaves to avoid the fight for the evening, she’ll be even madder. So he’s at a stalemate. And he’s wondering if the relationship is salvageable. So he wants her to tell let him know if he should stay or go.
That is a good interpretation. I always picture the club scene and he arrives with a woman who then attaches herself to a different dude. If he leaves there will be trouble because any relationship is dead but if he stays, there might be a fight AND the relationship is still over. The great thing about songs is that they can mean different things to different people. 😄

@TheWiredpair it was crazy. 1st night, they moved me to the tunnel where the bands walk from dressing room to stage. The lead from the clash asked us if we would have a beer with him. Sadly, we weren't aloud. The bass play from the WHO knew my ex mother in law, his sister and her went to school together, she grew up in England, and he confirmed it. They told me i was filmed with some guy that was trying to pass me to get to the stage but a capt and officers took care of that, they tossed him out the back gate in a mud hole! 2nd night i was in the gated area where the smoke machines were right in the middle of the field. I never looked at the concert footage. It was a great time.

Joe Strummer's Spanish backing vocals reflect his global background. He was born John Graham Mellor on August 21, 1952, when his father, a diplomat, was stationed in Ankara, Turkey. After The Clash broke up Strummer had a couple acting roles and musical credits before forming the very experimental band the Mescaleros around the turn of the century.
I was fortunate enough to have seen Joe play in Hollywood about a year before his passing. I did see the Clash as well as BAD in concert when I was younger.
Rolling Stone did a “Top 500 Albums of all Time” list maybe 20 years ago. Keeping in mind that 5 of the top 10 were Beatles albums, The Clash’s London Calling came in at #8. Iconic is an understatement. The Only Band That Matters is closer to the truth. Also, fun fact, Paul and Mick both have worked extensively with The Gorillaz.

The Clash were musical geniuses. I always took this song to be about a deeper more involved relationship not after a first date. London Calling is a master class in song writing.

The Clash were the second biggest punk band after the Sex Pistols. The Clash were much more interesting though. This one and "Rock The Casbah" were the most popular songs worldwide also thanks to MTV that aired the latter all the time. The Clash catalog is very heterogeneous and varied from punk to rock to reggae. They were very politically based, leaning to the extreme left, especially the singer Joe Strummer that often wore t-shirts glorifying European communist terrorist groups like german "RAF" or Italian "Brigate Rosse", both on stage and during photo sessions. Their most iconic songs, I think, are "London Calling" and "I fought the law", but I believe you should react to "Rock the Casbah" next.

lucky enough to have seen joe strummer just when I was discovering the CLash in late 90's at glastonbury. One of my fav bands still ... I was late 70s kid so never saw them in their prime. Strummer was jut gettting his groover on again and was looking forward to seeing them more, or him at least, but sadly life cur short early. one of my first musical heroes to pass away LOST IN THE SUPERMARKET is one of absolute favourite forms of art, not just song or music!

My favorite songs by them are "Stick It In", "Black Coffee", "Damaged", and "TV Party". As for The Clash, this is one of their better songs. They were considered as punk rock, but the devolved into a reggae/ska group.

The Clash were a huge band in the late 70's and early 80's. They were much more than a Punk band. They incorporated Ska, Reggae, Rock, Rockabilly, Pop and put their own twist to it. They were very political, usually denouncing social inequality and greedy corporations. And yes, they had a few songs that had Spanish in them. They were unique and so many big bands of today such as U2, Green Day, Foo Fighters to name a few are all huge Clash fans. Their lead singer Joe Strummer passed away in 2002 unfortunately. He had a solid solo career after The Clash and one of his most successful project was Joe Strummer & The Mescaleros. A unique band well worth exploring.
The clash is one of my favourite bands and there's not many I can say is my all time favourites. My favourite songs are train in vain, clampdown, death or glory, magnificent seven, rock the casbah, remote control.... Unfortunately the band weren't together for a long time, so they never made many albums but their albums are masterpieces.

The Clash are what I think of when the word PUNK rock is used. They were one of the originals, along with the Sex Pistols and some others. The band was part of the punk scene of the late 70's/early 80's. Their music did make it to mainstream while others didn't and some would call them out for selling out. But this band stayed true to their punk roots. Check out - "London Calling", "I'm So Bored with the U.S.A", "Career Opportunities", "Rock the Casbah". The Clash and punk rock in general were anti-establishment and sang a lot about politics. Great stuff!
Gosh, I still love Mick Jones (the guy singing lead on this). He and Paul Simonon (the bass player) later played on Gorillaz “Plastic Beach” and toured with them. I never got to see The Clash, but I was thrilled to see them with Gorillaz. Also, Mick Jones went on to form Big Audio Dynamite. As for other Clash stuff, “London Calling”, “Rock the Casbah”, “Train in Vain”, “Lost in the Supermarket”, “Tommy Gun”, “Radio Clash”, and “Straight to Hell” are my favorites. 💜
A portion of the WHO,s (one of the most iconic bands in rock history) song “Who Are You” is about Pete Townshend running into members of the Clash in SoHo pub you should check that song out

The Spanish background vocals were due to Joe trying to mess with Mick during the recording. The engineer was from Honduras, if i remember right, and Joe asked him to translate the vocals into Spanish. They then snuck up on Mick to surprise him, which is why he said "Split!"
Love this song. I also love two covers with female singers. One by The Cooltrane Quartet and the other by Scary Pockets. The first has jazz elements and the second more funk.

More Clash please!! Might be worth looking at 'The Magnificient Seven' as it's considered by some to be the first Hip Hop influenced song to hit the mainstream. The Clash spent a lot of time in New York around that time and wanted to try and incorporate that style and culture into their music.

I followed the Clash since they were founder members of the UK Punk scene in 1977 along with the Sex Pistols, The Damned, The Jam and the Stranglers among others. This is from 1981 and is one of their more commercial tunes which seem to be popular with reactors along with Rock the Casbah and Train in vain, all great tunes but I prefer their grittier early work - White riot, London's burning, Complete Control, White man in Hammersmith Palais (imo their best song). I doubt you'll see this BP, but please don't jump to conclusions about the use of 'White' in the titles, the Clash were anti-racism. Cheers

Next should be "Rock the Casbah" i think, but "Guns of Brixton", "London Calling", "Know Your Rights", "I Fought the Law", and "Magnificent Seven" also need to be on the shortlist for reactions. The Clash was the first punk band to really break into radio airplay in the late 70's. The Ramones didn't really get airplay where I lived but The Clash did and they became the gateway for people to find other groups. Need to do London Calling.

lucky enough to have seen joe strummer just when I was discovering the CLash in late 90's at glastonbury. One of my fav bands still ... I was late 70s kid so never saw them in their prime. Strummer was jut gettting his groover on again and was looking forward to seeing them more, or him at least, but sadly life cur short early. one of my first musical heroes to pass away

Black Flag was a hardcore punk band from Los Angeles. They were around from 1976-1986. They helped introduce heavy metal elements into punk rock. My favorite songs by them are "Stick It In", "Black Coffee", "Damaged", and "TV Party".
As for The Clash, this is one of their better songs. They were considered as punk rock, but the devolved into a reggae/ska group.

The Clash were a huge band in the late 70's and early 80's. They were much more than a Punk band. They incorporated Ska, Reggae, Rock, Rockabilly, Pop and put their own twist to it. They were very political, usually denouncing social inequality and greedy corporations. And yes, they had a few songs that had Spanish in them. They were unique and so many big bands of today such as U2, Green Day, Foo Fighters to name a few are all huge Clash fans. Their lead singer Joe Strummer passed away in 2002 unfortunately. He had a solid solo career after The Clash and one of his most successful project was Joe Strummer & The Mescaleros. A unique band well worth exploring.
The clash is one of my favourite bands and there's not many I can say is my all time favourites. My favourite songs are train in vain, clampdown, death or glory, magnificent seven, rock the casbah, remote control.... Unfortunately the band weren't together for a long time, so they never made many albums but their albums are masterpieces.

Mos Def sampled The Clash’s “MAGNIFICENT SEVEN”, a MUST hear song. Straight NYC Dance Floor BANGER; the extended version is The Magnificent Dance. Another must hear: “ROCK THE CASBAH” it was 🔥 in the Ckubs AND on the rock stations. Quite relevant today, too!
Rock the Casbah and London Calling were also huge hits for The Clash.

The Clash are what I think of when the word PUNK rock is used. They were one of the originals, along with the Sex Pistols and some others. The band was part of the punk scene of the late 70's/early 80's. Their music did make it to mainstream while others didn't and some would call them out for selling out. But this band stayed true to their punk roots. Check out - "London Calling", "I'm So Bored with the U.S.A", "Career Opportunities", "Rock the Casbah". The Clash and punk rock in general were anti-establishment and sang a lot about politics. Great stuff!
Gosh, I still love Mick Jones (the guy singing lead on this). He and Paul Simonon (the bass player) later played on Gorillaz “Plastic Beach” and toured with them. I never got to see The Clash, but I was thrilled to see them with Gorillaz. Also, Mick Jones went on to form Big Audio Dynamite. As for other Clash stuff, “London Calling”, “Rock the Casbah”, “Train in Vain”, “Lost in the Supermarket”, “Tommy Gun”, “Radio Clash”, and “Straight to Hell” are my favorites. 💜

The Spanish background vocals were due to Joe trying to mess with Mick during the recording. The engineer was from Honduras, if i remember right, and Joe asked him to translate the vocals into Spanish. They then snuck up on Mick to surprise him, which is why he said "Split!"
Stuff like this always makes me think of Big Audio Dynamite...... that was a very fun time in music.

Love this song. I also love two covers with female singers. One by The Cooltrane Quartet and the other by Scary Pockets. The first has jazz elements and the second more funk.

Oh this is a great band to get into ..."London Calling " , "Bankrobber" , " I fought the Law" , "Rock the Casbah" are all classics and well worth a listen . They were punk rock royalty , their songs often politically charged covering anything from government to racism . Top band , top lyrics , great musicians .
More Clash please!! Might be worth looking at 'The Magnificient Seven' as it's considered by some to be the first Hip Hop influenced song to hit the mainstream. The Clash spent a lot of time in New York around that time and wanted to try and incorporate that style and culture into their music.

This album [Combat Rock] and the subsequent success of singles and the subsequent U.S. tour (opening for the (weak!) '80s reboot of The Who! - who: despite Keith Moon's early demise, weee6, still, a huge draw and developed a new commercial viability, in the early 1980s).
Those singles and that tour made worldwide rock stars out if The Clash.

I followed the Clash since they were founder members of the UK Punk scene in 1977 along with the Sex Pistols, The Damned, The Jam and the Stranglers among others. This is from 1981 and is one of their more commercial tunes which seem to be popular with reactors along with Rock the Casbah and Train in vain, all great tunes but I prefer their grittier early work - White riot, London's burning, Complete Control, White man in Hammersmith Palais (imo their best song). I doubt you'll see this BP, but please don't jump to conclusions about the use of 'White' in the titles, the Clash were anti-racism. Cheers

The Clash was the first punk band to really break into radio airplay in the late 70's. The Ramones didn't really get airplay where I lived but The Clash did and they became the gateway for people to find other groups.

You should have a listen to the UK's first punk band from the 70's, The Damned. You could go for the very first UK Punk single, New Rose, the classic Smash It Up, or something totally different, the 80's hit Eloise 😉
