"The Knack's lead singer Doug Fieger wrote the song for the then-teenager who would become his girlfriend, Sharona Alperin. Fieger died last month... Alperin, who stayed friends with him, was one of the people at his side during those last days."
Excerpts from "The Woman Behind 'My Sharona'" an interview with her on All Things Considered in 2010:
" I was madly in love with my boyfriend at the time, and so it took a year for me to leave my boyfriend."
Alperin remembers the day when she first heard "My Sharona" - before she and Fieger were an item.
"One day, on my lunch break from my clothing store, I went to their [The Knack's] rehearsal," she says. "And I saw maybe Burton [Averee] or Doug [Fieger] say, 'Should we play it? Should we play it? All right, let's play it for her.' And I sat down. Cut to: I'm driving back to the clothing store, and I'm thinking, 'Did I just hear a song with my name in it?'"
The cover art of the single "My Sharona" actually features Alperin posing in a revealing tank top and tight jeans. For some time, she was famous in her own right.
"That was, like, my normal outfit, what I wore all the time, by the way," she says, laughing. "I guess I didn't look at myself as a celebrity, but people were very excited when they met me. And I remember going on tour, and seeing sometimes people dress up. And I'd say, 'What are you dressed up as?' And they would say, 'Sharonas.'
"Not everybody knew that Sharona was a person, or they thought maybe it was a thing. I think in Japan, they might have thought it was the male organ - that's what I heard."
Fieger and Alperin eventually got married to separate people, but they remained in touch. Fieger died on Valentine's Day this year, but Alperin says she went to see him frequently in his final months.
"A lot of his idols, people that meant so much to him in the music industry, came to pay their respects to him," she says. "And it was really beautiful."

First thing on my mind other than her, was the age as I knew she was young. She stated she was 18, but a friend later told me she was 17! I'm like WHOA! I called her, and asked if she'd mind bringing an ID to our date, and she said sure. "My Sharona" is about Doug Fieger's real-life love affair with Sharona Alperin, who inspired the song's two-month writing process. Fieger, the band's lead singer and rhythm guitarist, met Alperin when he was 25 and she was 17, and they dated for four years. Fieger said he fell in love with her immediately, and that she was inspirational and moved him on a basic level. The song's production and guitar-bass combination also reflect sexual tension.

I think the difference between older stuff like this & more modern music is not only did the audience view this stuff as fantasy (not reality), but lyrics were more of a secondary characteristic of most any song. Today, most, like yourself, are more lyric focused. Stuff feels more like relatable poetry behind a beat in modern music. Back then, I think it was more melody & harmony.

I have fond memories of The Knack and the one and only time I became an "accidental" groupie. I was about 16 when the song came out, and they were doing a concert in my town, so a friend and I went to see them. It was a great concert! When we left the Coliseum, we just happened to leave the exit nearest where the bands left the arena. We stopped to talk to some other 16-17 yr old girls and guys that we met at the concert. About that time a couple of security guards walked by and one of them said to the other, "Just a bunch of groupies!". We all just looked at each other, and then one of the guys said, "Well, if we've got the name, we might as well play the game!" A minute or two later the limo with The Knack came rolling out. We all proceeded to scream and chase it! They rolled their windows down and started shaking hands with all of the kids. I got to shake Berton Averre's hand! The limo then pulled out of the parking lot. It's probably one of the tamest groupie stories ever told, but it left me with a great memory! I can't hear a song of theirs without thinking about it.

The band member who cowrote the song said it took about an hour to create it. They recorded the entire album for less than $18,000. In a Freakonomics interview last year, he said of the income derived from My Sharona, "it’s easily over $100,000 a year, and less than, I’d say, $300,000. I still make a very good living off of that one song."
What he had to say about the creation of the song:
AVERRE: “My Sharona” was one of the first songs that Doug and I wrote together when we started playing the Troubadour. Doug was always saying, “We should have a song that’s like the end of the set, that makes them want us to play an encore.” I was a huge fan of Elvis Costello’s. And the drum breakdown in “Pump it Up” was, like, so … just feral and exciting. I picked up a guitar and I started playing the riff that we know as the “My Sharona” riff. BUH-bah BUh-bah BUH BAH BUH BAH BUH BAH-buh BUH-bah BUh-bah BUH BAH BAH-bah BAH BAH! And I thought, “This is pretty good. I like this.” So, we went back to Doug’s apartment. And Sharona was this young woman and Doug took a shine to her. He just, just off the top of his head, came up with the kind of stuttering, the “m - m - my Sharona.” He was channeling Roger Daltry in “My Generation.” And we cranked it out, you know, I’d say maybe an hour. Best hour ever.

Wikipedia-When Doug Fieger was 25 years old, he met 17-year-old Sharona Alperin, who inspired a two-month-long run of songwriting, as well as eventually becoming his girlfriend for the next four years. Fieger recounted that "It was like getting hit in the head with a baseball bat; I fell in love with her instantly. And when that happened, it sparked something and I started writing a lot of songs feverishly in a short amount of time." Fieger and Averre worked out the structure and melody of the song. Averre was originally averse to using Alperin's name in the song, but Fieger wanted it to be a direct expression of his feelings; Averre ultimately relented. Fieger claimed that "My Sharona" was written in 15 minutes; moreover, it was purportedly mixed in an additional 15 minutes after the recording of the song was made in a single take (not including background vocals). Fieger and Alperin were engaged at one point but never married. In a 2005 interview, Fieger said that they remained "great friends"; additionally, she would visit him frequently as Fieger was dying of cancer. Alperin went on to have a successful career as a realtor in Los Angeles.

@@justdone1068The Stroke is not dirty song. It is,about the music industry and the "stroking" the egos of the music industry producers/executives for musicians to get their music published and aired on radio without being told what or how the artist was allowed. At the time Billy Squire did this song artists were being manipulated by executives of the industry or record labels. Most think it was a dirty song but it was a misinterpretation. The guitar solo coming out the little bridge really was one of the best solos in a early 80s massive hit. And yes, this was very much a weird and creepy song, but it was everywhere when it came out because it had the trifecta for a pop song -- a rhythmic hook, a melodic hook, and a lyrical hook.

Also, local radio stations were dropping like flies and being taken over by corporate radio, who ruled with an iron fist. They wanted to make money, but they were also *way* conservative... *snowflake-like.* They also had a hard time competing with MTV *(1981).* A few years later *(1985),* Tipper Gore, along with fellow “Washington wives”, went on a crusade of sorts against 'explicit' lyrics.
Keep in mind that the *1950's* were over run with *'snowflakes':* the fear of rock n' roll, kids moving their hips when dancing, ELVIS THE PELVIS!, White teenagers playing records by 'Negro' performers, beatniks...

Parody king Weird Al Yankovic owed his career to The Knack and their 1979 hit 'My Sharona'... When he was still in college, Weird Al was making tapes of parodies to send to radio show 'Dr. Demento'... and he recorded the parody 'My Bologna' on his accordion and it became popular on air... Doug Fieger (vocals/ guitar) of The Knack who wrote 'My Sharona' heard 'My Bologna' and found it hilarious 😂Fieger told his A&R at Capitol Records to sign Weird Al in '79 and release 'My Bologna' as a commercial single... Fieger said that he met Weird Al at a Knack concert and Al showed up w/ a huge bologna 😂
'My Bologna' was released as a commercial single and it sold well... but Capitol Records didn't know what to do w/ a comedy artist like Weird Al and he was dropped shortly after... But that was his start. Weird Al followed it up w/ an accordion spoof of Queen's 'Another one bites the dust' ('Another one rides the bus')... and formed his own live band. Thankfully, Weird Al was signed to a struggling label Scotti Bros. Records in 1983 and he was off and running ...
The Knack became a one-hit wonder but 'My Sharona' became a hit again in 1994 when it was remixed & re-released on the soundtrack of Winona Ryder's movie 'Reality bites'.

This song was punishing the airwaves for almost a year. From 1979 and into 198o, you couldn't get away from it. But if this threw you for a loop, just play the other song that revs up the testosterone. It's called GOOD GIRLS DON'T.
As a father of two daughters, the devil is in the details.
And try this video gem. The group is Romeo Void. The song is called NEVER SAY NEVER.
SCHOOL BOY CRUSH should send shivers down.your spine. You have to remember that most rock music was aimed at teenagers and their thoughts about love and sex. The fact that adults are delivering the words and music can make it a bit awkward at times.
Ok, Pegasus. Get after it. The next move is ALL yours.

A great song that most who grew up with still love but can confess that it did not age well based on the topic. However, one must understand the era as well. At the time and even decades prior there was an acceptance by some (not all) for older men having relationships with younger girls in their teens or what we would call jail bait. This was common at the time until around the 90's I would say. Many songs were written about underage relationships, including:
    - The Beatles - "I saw her standing there"
    - Ringo Starr - "You're Sixteen"
    - Kiss - "Christine Sixteen"
    - Winger - "Seventeen"
    - Stray Cats - "Sexy & 17"
Elvis Presley dated a 14 year old Priscilla whom he eventually married. Jerry Lee Lewis, who sang "Great Balls of Fire", dated & married his 13 year old cousin with the approval of her parents. The list goes on and on but the point is that every era has flaws and things we can look back on and think was bad. This generation will as well. As an 80's generation kid I can look back on many of the hair metal and rap songs & videos and think that the songs are great but the videos were definitely an issue because they glamorized slutty woman, using woman and men simply thinking with their dicks. I wouldn't change a thing about it because we were what we were at the time. But we grow as a society & as people and we know better today. It is called evolving.
