The Dream Journey - Discovering musicians across Pakistan (A Non Profit Project)
A film about an exhilarating journey of five friends with a shared passion for discovering and recording musicians in their living environments across Pakistan.
The sessions of vocal music recorded and filmed cover several musical forms in the Indo Pakistani tradition; Thumri, Kaafi, Ghazal, Qawwali and Khyaal. The kalaams that the musicians drew from ranged the whole spectrum of great poets: Khusrau, Jalal ud din Rumi, Kabir, Baba Bulleh Shah, Waris Shah, Iqbal, Faiz and numerous mystic poets of India and Pakistan. The performances evoked memories of the verdant lushness of the Punjab, the haunting mysticism of the Great Rajputana and Sind Deserts, the vibrancy of Hazrat Nizamuddin’s Delhi, the great aura of Ajmer, the majestic beauty of the Indo-Gangetic plain.
Some of the musicians are established and famous, others are amongst the brilliant budding talent that adorns Pakistan’s musical scene. Each of the mehfils has a distinct atmosphere and mood, but there is a common thread. We asked each of the musicians to stay close to their respective inherited musical traditions, allowing the singers an opportunity to present some pieces that are rarely heard today.
We are inspired to present the brilliance of this contemporary Pakistani vocal music to a wider audience.

If some night I happen to gaze upon the King of beauty,
I will put my head in his feet and sacrifice my heart & soul
بہ گردِ کعبہ کہ دردم؟ کہ رؤے یارِ من کعبہ
کُنم طوّافِ مہخانہ ، بہ بوسم پاۓ مستاں را
کعبہ کا گرد کیوں کروں جب میرے یار کی روح میں کعبہ ہے
میں مہخانے کا طواف کرتا ہوں اور مست شرابیوں کے پیر چومتا ہوں
Why should I circle the Kaaba? When Kaaba is within my beloved's soul
I instead circle the taverns, and kiss the feet of drunkards
کافرِ عشق ہوں میں بندہِ اسلام نہیں
بت پرستی کے سؤا اور مجھے کام نہیں
سر جھکایا تو پتھر صنم بن گۓ
عشق دھڑکا تو حق آشنا ہوگیا
رشق کرتا ہے کعبہ میرے کفر پر
میں نے جس بُت کو پوجہا خدا ہوگیا
Idols became beloved, all I had to do was bestow my head
With the beating of love, truth revealed itself
Even Kaaba is envious of my apostasy
For whichever idol I worship turns into God
مگوئ کلمہَ کفرست ، اگر گوئ شوی کافر
بروۓ مُدّعا ایں ناداں ، چہ دانی زندِ مستاں را
مت کہو کہ میں کفر کہ الفاظ بول رہا ہوں ، کہ میں مرتد ہوجاؤنگا اگر یہ بولتا رہا
چلے جا اے نادان مولوی ، تجھے کیا خبر ان پرسرار علموں کی
Say not that I speak the words of apostasy, that I will be an apostate if I continue speaking
Go away O preacher, for you not know the wisdom of these divine secrets

I think the dream journey has explored enough qawalis by now, its high time you take the journey to pay tribute to the threshold it was born from 'The chishti shrines' there are darbari qawals at almost every chishti shrine and they have been paying tribute to the master of the shrine for generations. So I've been browsing your channel a lot these past monthes, probably because I don't feel so good and it's the only music that brings me comfort (and the quality of both recordings and videos is just so good) , and while I enjoyed each and every group you presented (particularly the playfulness and passion of Fareed Ayaz and Ustad Amir Ali Khan) I feel like Maulvi Haider Hassan (R.I.P🙏) , presented the most powerful texts/poetries regarding spiritual love and freedom; his voice sounds to my ear like a voice of revolt against dogmas and of love of the divine; at least to my western understanding, he was a spiritual warrior..thanks for giving us all the ability to hear such jewels

People like me who are living outside of Pakistan for so long miss only two things, Urdu language and traditional music. Thanks for this. Just goes to show how good recording and staging and setting can make such a difference - you definitely dont get the same vibe if you look at some of the Maulvi's other videos on youtube..
Very true, a lot of his recordings are in a public setting where half the people are interested. And half of those half are more interested in 'spiritual networking' than the substance. This is indeed a different kind of mehfil.

I love this piece... absolutely beautiful.. and when the music dissolves the poetry into it an entirely new dimension of feelings and thoughts evokes in my inner-self... listening to it regularly for last 3-4years.....only annoying thing is the singer in white kurta sitting to the right of Maulvi Haider Hassan Vehranwale, he just breaks the tempo in between in order to grab some singing for himself...
