- Renowned crime fiction writer in Hindi, Surendra Mohan Pathak is busy writing books for past 60 years. He has written approximately 300 novels and immensely popular among hindi writers.
Among the Indian mystery writers, Surender Mohan Pathak has definitely been the numero uno during the past half a century. He is the author who has rendered a prestige and dignity to the pulp-fiction novels of crime-detection or mystery genre written in Hindi. He wrote a lot in the heyday of pulp-fiction books in India which had a huge sale but seen derogatorily by the decorous readers. However it’s Mr. Pathak who created a unique identity for himself in the crowd of pulp-fiction writers and gradually became so popular that he gained celebrity status.
Born to Mr and Mrs Pannalal Pathak, in Lahore (now in Pakistan) on 19.02.1940, Mr. Pathak moved to India at the time Partition along with his family. Mr Pathak completed his degree in science from DAV college and Masters from MMh college Gaziabad. Despite having studied Science subjects, Mr Pathak had very keen interest in languages with sound knowledge of English, Urdu and his mother tongue - Punjabi. He writes in Hindi but his knowledge of English, Urdu and Punjabi reflects on his Hindi writing as well, making the language of his novels spicy and influential.
In 1964, he got a job in Indian Telephone Industries which he continued to do till his retirement on 28.02.1998. However, he carried on with his literary interest with the job. He read a lot of quality novels from the English literature and due to his keen interest in crime fiction he started writing himself
A simple man with a jolly nature and a positive attitude towards life, this seasoned author is active even in his seventies. He wants to write till his last day on this Earth and asserts - "I want the people to say that in the field of mystery writing, Mr. Pathak died with his shoes on.

This interview should have been taken by a Pathak fan for there remains so much to ask about his stories. for many of his Thriller category novels are matchless ... he was like a gust of fresh air those days when many people were monotonous bordering on to irritating.

इरफान साहब,,, मन नहीं भरा अपने चहेते लेखक के इस छोटे से इंटरव्यू से,,, इल्तजा है फिर लाइए इन्हें एक बार और,,, लेकिन इस बार जरा लंबा हो,,, वैसे उन 90% खुशकिस्मत पाठकों में मैं भी हूँ जो पाठक जी की सभी किताबें पढ़ते हैं और अपने पास सहेजकर इनकी किताबों को रखते भी हैं।
खैर,,, बहुत शुक्रिया जनाब हमें हमारे प्रिय लेखक से इस संक्षिप्त मुलाकात कराने के लिए,, उन्हें थोड़ा और जानने और समझने का मौका देने के लिए 🙏
एक घंटे में भी आपको संक्षिप्त लगा? क्या क्या जानना रह गया?
चूंकि अतिप्रिय लेखक हैं तो जाहिर है कि जानने की उत्सुकता भी रहती है और जानते भी काफी कुछ हैं लेकिन इनके मुंह से इनके बारे में जानना, ये एक तरह से ऐसी खुशी है जिसे शब्दों में मैं बयां नहीं कर सकता और फिर इंटरव्यूज में अक्सर ऐसा कुछ जानने को भी मिल जाया करता है अक्सर जो कहीं पढ़ा- सुना नहीं होता हमने। इसलिए कहा कि थोड़ा और लंबा होता तो कुछ और नया जानने को मिलता प्रिय लेखक के बारे में।

ईरफान जी ने इन्टरव्यू थोड़ा arrogantly लिया । पाठक जी जैसे down to earth व्यक्तितव से थोड़ी शालीनता दिखानी चाहिए थी ।
लगता है पाठक जी उम्र की वजह से आजकल थोड़ा ऊँचा सुनते हैँ। शायद ईसी वजह से इरफ़ान साहब ने भी इंटरव्यू थोड़ा loud लिया ।
पाठक जी ऊँचा सुनते हैं इसलिये इरफान जी को ज्यादा जोर लगाना पड़ रहा है,एरोगेंस वाली कोई बात नही है😌

This is one of the best interview of Guftagoo. I have not read any book of Mr Surendra Pathak. But I become a fan of him after watching this great interview. This is not interview but you got to know all things about life of a person in 1 hour duration.

इस बातचीत को देर से सुना।सुमोपा मेरे किशोरावस्था के लेखक रहे।उस वक्त स्कूल से निकल ही रहा था।यही कोई १९८५-८६ का समय रहा।कई उपन्यास पढ़े उस दौरान,इनका लेखन सबसे अलग था।सुनील सीरीज़ ज़्यादा पढ़ी।विमल भी ।
कई सवालों को वे समझ नहीं पाए फिर भी बेहतरीन संवाद रहा।

I first read SMP novel Meena Murder Case in 1991 when i was enjoying my vacation after giving my SSC exam.I got hold of the novel on the footh path opposite Damodar talkies for Rs.5. I came home and started reading the novel. I got so engrossed that i did not had my dinner and completed it by 4 am. From that day onward i got hooked to his novels till date.

An interesting interview. Even a skilled interviewer like Irfan was a little irritated because often the answers were at cross purposes. I suspect this was because Mr. Pathak may have age-related hearing difficulties. Nevertheless, Mr. Pathak's humility, honesty, genuine hard work, and experience made it all worthwhile. Mr. Pathak has brought quality and dignity to an otherwise irreverent profession. Towards the end, I think Mr. Irfan came around it and started enjoying the interaction.

मुझे लगता है ये इंटरव्यू दो घंटे और भी हो सकता था, चाहे इसके पार्ट बन जाते पर ऐसा होना चाहिए था, बहुत से सवाल थे जो शायद छूट गये, या पूछे नहीं गए, या ऑफ कैमरा जो भी माहौल रहा हो, मसलन : राइटिंग प्रोसेस, न्यू आईडिया रिसर्च, आईडिया जनरेशन आदि....मुझे लगता है जिस अंदाज़ से सुरेन्द्र जी बात कर रहे थे, वो बहुत कुछ बोलने के इच्छुक थे, भले ही कई बार वो ऑफ बीट या ऑफ टॉपिक जा रहा हो ...इरफ़ान जी अगर हो सके तो इसका दूसरा पार्ट भी लाईये आप रेख्ता पर क्योकि भले ही इस इंटरव्यू को आम जन ना देखे या सुने पर नए लेखकों व् रचनाकारों के लिये आपका इंटरव्यू प्रोग्राम एक ब्लूप्रिंट का काम करता है एक दस्तावेजी लाइब्रेरी का काम करता है, हो सके तो फिर से कर लीजिये सुरेन्द्र जी का इंटरव्यू
