I think if they had just added that "wait, what?" They could have turned the moral into "Pay attention before you make an agreement and make sure you know exactly what you're agreeing to." Which I think is a good and uncommon moral.

Gray Mousemouse Heard of that, saw no proof of it, but at the same time, I wouldn't be surprised if it's genuine, as some bronies, particularly the 4chan ones, are quite nasty, and would make porn out of him out of spite. But once again, it's not something you can blame an entire fandom about. Kinda like how you can't blame the entire star wars fandom if somebody committed a murder dressed as Darth Vader.

I loved this episode because I'm a sucker for plots that deal with the perspectives of different characters all from the same specific event. While Rainbow seemed kind of mean, at least she realized she screwed up, and that's all the matters, right? Overall, it's one of the shows funniest episodes.

Am I the only person who thinks Rarity and Applejack shouldn't go to things like this? Applejacks inability to lie means she will at best get things at what she values them as and no less. I.E. She has trouble talking people down. And Rarity, being generous, will probably give more then what she thinks something is worth. I know they have both on occasion failed to live up to their element but 90% of the time they usually follow it.

This episode reminded me of the fetch quests you run into in video games, especially the Animal Crossing ones where you go to get an item from the person who borrowed it, only to be told that they lent it to someone else... and the chain continues. Once I was sent to EVERY character in the town before getting the item, and it turned out that the animal directly next to the person looking for the item was the one that had ended up with it.

I honestly don't see how the wheel chair pony could bring up any controversy. Then again, I couldn't see how derpy did either. Some people just need to grow some thick skin, a pair of balls, and stop being offended for other people even though the 'targeted' group wasn't offended themselves. I'd be happy to be represented in a show if I had a disability.

  • @WeegeeSlayer123
    @WeegeeSlayer123 10 ปีที่แล้ว +16

I really hope this show keeps making GOOD episodes. I would hate to see this show be reduced to a stupid girls show, and see the fan base decline. MLP FIM has potential to improve. These writers have to try their hardest.
Other shows have gone through decline in entertainment, like family guy, or the fairly odd parents. TV shows that try to last forever turn to shit eventually, if MLP FIM ended in a good way then I would be happy.
Someone needs to remind these writers that just because something is intended for children doesn't mean you half-ass it. Children aren't stupid, they might not understand some things but kids are functional human beings, not brainless vegetables.
If shit like this continues then all hope is lost.

The pony in the weelchair things is based on a real person his name is Sylvain LeVasseur-Portelance.
In real life, Sylvain is a teen who suffers from a muscle disease known as Spinal Muscular Atrophy Type 3, and is also involved with a foundation called Rebecca Run that promotes awareness of SMA. Sylvain himself is personally responsible for raising several thousand dollars towards one day finding a cure.

TheMysteriousMrEnter - The wheel-chair pony was the oc of a fan who asked that his character be given a cameo in the show, or something like that. There was never any intention whatsoever of insulting the disabled.

    • @wildpiercy1141
      @wildpiercy1141 9 ปีที่แล้ว +4

***** Wasn't the controversy either that bronies were complaining an OC got on the show because it was "SJW pandering" or something, then a second one that they started making a ton of porn of that OC even after the creator/the creator's mother (I think) publicly said they didn't want people to do that?
(Also just to add to the whole certain infamous background pony thing bc I'm too lazy to make multiple comments I'm not sure what the consensus is on the voice acting/personality of the character and I don't want to go on and pass a total judgement on it since I'm neurotypical, but from what I heard at least part of the problem was the name used in the episode since "derpy" and derivatives originated as a way to mock people with downs syndrome. Consider the hand flapping and voice used back when people started doing that. I personally like some of the other fan names like Bright Eyes or Bubble Wrap as alternatives)

    Just a little thought...
But the whole infamous scene where Fluttershy is 'sold' sounds more like... They're buying her SERVICES, not.... her. It's the same as selling an accountant or even a doctor, sure as hell not legal nor was it RD's decision, but no one was intending to enslave Flutters forever.
Still, the point stands that it was horridly executed. :/
    ....
    I love the wheel-chair set up :)

Throughout the Rainbow Dash/Fluttershy story, I did not see Fluttershy's timidity as the focus. The timidity was used only as an easy extra obstacle that would frustrate Rainbow Dash, along with the low demand for a rusty horseshoe, the broken chalice, the lunch break, and the vendor changing her mind about the diet cerberus. As Rainbow's frustration increases, her balance between Logos (logic and reason) and Pathos (emotional frenzy) tips in favor of Pathos. Rainbow Dash clearly isn't thinking about what she's giving up here, as she has abandoned logic and seeks only after her emotional desire for the book. Also, Rainbow Dash clearly doesn't recognize the dexision she has made qt first when she talks to Fluttershy as if she were right by her side, also able to celebrate with her instead of being led away as an indentured servant. Hopefully this clears things up for the better.

This is my absolute least favorite episode. I hate it. On top of being horribly boring due to everything in the episode being painfully predictable, the one part that isn't predictable is absolutely reprehensible. RD basically traded Fluttershy away to do a job where she's unpaid to work for an unforeseeable amount of time. In other words, human, er, pony trafficking and slavery. And the worst part? Twi's just like, "Nope, you said it's fair so it's fair." No, it's fucking not. Trading a book for a person isn't fair. Even if the two people in the trade agree upon it, that doesn't make it fair because it completely takes Fluttershy's say in the matter out of the equation, which is inherently unfair. And I realize that Fluttershy gave the okay. However, the episode also went to great lengths to show what a pushover Fluttershy is. So how can it be viewed any way other than to see it as her being walked over again? Even if she agreed of her own volition, it still doesn't mean she's not possibly caving to pressure and what RD might think or do if she doesn't agree. I hate this episode. It makes my head hurt in so many ways. Namely facepalming.

This episode is kind of a guilty pleasure because Rainbow and Fluttershy's story reminds me of the trading quests in the legend of zelda games (plus it involves my favorite pairings in the show).
I'll give Scott credit and say that this was a good improvement over his last episode. He can make very funny episodes but the problem with him is that he relies on old character tropes in previous episodes instead of making unique ones. All he has to do is show the audience something we haven't seen before and he could be up there with Dave Polsky. I liked Twilight's side of the episode but when she did that speech after the crowd left was so sudden like if she either already knew the books wont be traded or she was so desperate to write another letter to Celestia so she staged the whole thing.

It's not slavery because Fluttershy went with the pony on her own free will. Second, once she finished training that dog, she would be able to leave. If It was slavery, she would have to stay in manehatten for her entire life. So, no it's not slavery.

It earns points with me for the pairings though. Trying to play the main six slice of life comedy in this setting works, and I don't feel the episode was trying to teach fluttershy a lesson from the beginning. It was useing her passive nature as gag and gimmick of the character. Despite how much fluttershy may have grown these aspects of the character don't really go away, . Their arc is much more focused on rainbow dash getting her book. And really the lesson is about the sacrifices you make to help out your friends that rainbow dash calls rarity and applejack out on. I did however feel that twilight may have been wanting to trade the books for the quill not because the quill had any value, but because she would like to have the books educate somepony else rather than collect dust.

  • @akmalsy159

I think many people already refute the Fluttershy slavery thing, so I'm gonna tackle something else; FS's (apparent) meekness.
While it's true she already learned to say NO in previous episodes, in Trade Ya FS actually CHOSE not to say no since multiple times she really wanted RD to get that book, even at the expanse of her own.
Personally, I really liked this episode for the humor & character interactions, all these problems MrEnter pointed out are simply nitpicks. Bad exposition? Most episodes, even Pinkie Pride had them. AJ & Rarity seem petty? Who hasn't been petty sometime in their life. Predictable story? Do you really predict FS to want to go.
I'll admit RD did seem OOC about that book, but she's just distracted on the prospect of finally completing her set.

I liked the moral with Twilight was pretty good, although it's not always entirely correct. You shouldn't always hold on to stuff, although it is important to think twice before throwing something away.
But the thing is, I don't think it was a 'moral' per se. The episode was mostly showing us why Twilight loves her books. If they had waited until after the finale when she was mourning the loss of her library, it might have seemed a little shoe horned in. But we know they thought it all out. This episode's best part for me was making that moment from Twilights Kingdom so much deeper

I know this review is about 2 years old, but...
I actually loved the design of the wheelchair pony. When I first saw this episode, I was watching it with my Fiancé, who is a Brony, and the first thing out of my mouth was "wow! I love the design of that pony!" I'm not kidding. I really liked the character design. Am I missing something? What is this... "controversy"? I understood with Derpy (though I didn't like how she was censored when Snails is portrayed stupider than Derpy- and Derpy sounds almost like a female version of Snails in terms of how she talks. So they should censor him too with that logic)
I'm not disabled, but I think they should include more designs like his, because some kids would be legitimately able to relate to him. They may not have addressed him, but if you were wheelchair bound, would you like people gawking at you? Or treat you like a normal person?
Maybe it's just me? Maybe I'm just oblivious?
But I loved that character design, and I hope they make more like him!

I was watching (great review btw) but you have to remember something: new viewers. Anyone who has never seen the show (and don't have an internet connection) won't know what has happened before if this is their first episode. The writers are actually doing a good thing with Pinkie and Twilight's exposition because, while to fans it will seem redundant, many new watchers will pick up on it quickly.

In fact, I love every episode of MLP simply because I get to see my favorite characters again. Are there duds? Yes. Do I care? No, I'll still re-watch them simply because I get to see those characters and how they interact in this world known as Equestria. People should really lighten up considering that the series didn't have to continue after season three. In fact, it didn't need to continue after season two. And yet... we're getting a fifth season. :/

8:44 I'm sorry, what? She spend the entire rest of the episode trying to get the trade called off, I think that makes it abundantly clear that she was just acting out of impulse and not thinking about her actions here. That's perfectly understandable. She should have reigned in her impulses better, but it does not point to her valuing the book over Fluttershy. And although Fluttershy was not happy with her part of the deal, she made it pretty clear that she was fine as long as it made RD happy--if it didn't make RD happy, or if she didn't care about making RD happy, I think it would be reasonable to assume that she wouldn't have gone along with the trade. I'm sorry, but I just have no idea where you're coming from here.

Just gonna say that Pinkie's segment with Twilight was my least favorite. Yeah, Rainbow/Flutters and Rarity/AJ's segments were cliched and rather poor in quality, but when Pinkie started saying too much about Twilight and humiliated that poor filly (yes, it was justified, but hey, imagine if it was just that filly asking for an autograph) and it brought me "A Friend in Deed" flashbacks. You do not want to remind me of that travesty. And hey, we can add another offense to her list of crimes, promoting hoarding! (yes, I know this isn't a crime, but hey, imagine if Twilight starts stealing things, we can point it all back to her...) Woohoo, Pinkie, you're on your way downhill for me again...ugh.

So, I have an idea for the Fluttershyproblem.
Rainbow could have made a deal, that Fluttershy stays and trains the Cerberus, until the one with the DaringDo book has to go back to Manehattan (Or whatever).
But Fluttershy wouldn´t have the time to trade her whistle, then.
So, Fluttershy has to stand up for herself and Rainbow learns you shouldn´t make deals about someone else without their involvement and Fluttershy learns to stand up for her, if something seems unfair.

After Twilight showed the book about Spike at your service didn't she say "and this book reminded me of when I got it, when I meet you Pinkie" or a line like that, isn't that a story error? Celestia gave her that book so the one "she got when she met Pinkie" could not be true as Celestia didn't give her book until season 3 and she sent a few others so many in fact it caused Spike to get a day off that resulted in the episode, Twilight "couldn't" have gotten it when she met Pinkie unless I really heard that line wrong?

I may not share some of the hate that this episode gets, but I can agree that I was pissed off with Rainbow Dash's actions. It's a weak episode yes, but at least to me it shows that Scott Sonneborn is slightly improving with his writing. I hope he gets better if decides to write for Season 5.

    "Would've taken only two words"
    Text: Rainbow Dash, "Wait, what?"
Yeah, no. I'm afraid that wouldn't have helped any. If there's one thing I know about fandumbs, it's that they will fucking ignore sentences YELLED IN THEIR FACES for the sake of calling something out on being a hypocrite or stupid, etc.
Take Pokemon for example. Nobody but me seems to know about the line "Pokemon aren't meant to fight. Not like this." from Nurse Joy during the first movie. Now how about something more recent?
    Ash: Hold on, you're-
    Newtwo: I am Mewtwo.
Everyone but me: Ash dunt rummber mootoo, writarz sux.
Seriously, these lines are RIGHT THERE and everybody misses them. Frankly, even your idea was the reality, people would still fucking ignore it in favor of making Rainbow Dash out to be a fucking selfish asshole who doesn't give a damn. Even in the best of fandoms, the majority are dumbasses who only give a fuck about what they interpret things as, and any evidence to the contrary is nonexistant, no matter how much you shove in their face the fact that they are WRONG.
