An all-time classic scene. The killer's estimation of Columbo rises precipitously, then precariously. The only thing missing is him bursting through the door again, just after the killer's cool veneer gives way to worry, with just one more thing.

I love Columbo’s reply to the villains, about distances, like in this video, Columbo, “Your beach house and his are close by.” Villain, “No, it’s a couple of miles!” Columbo, “That close.”Or in other episodes it’s about money. Columbo, “Gee this painting much have cost you a lot of money. Villain, “No, it was only $7,000 dollars.” Columbo, “That much.”

The difference in the fake slap is kind of chilling. Columbo makes it clear what he's about to do, takes a big stiff wind up and stops far away from the face. The killer just whips his hand like he's about the backhand him, empathised with who flinched.

At 4:28 you can see Culp is definitely not ambidextrous. When fake writing with his left, the whole entire hand moves, unlike 4:40 (right handed), where only the upper knuckles move slightly, like ours when using the dominant hand. He also has difficulty opening the file left handed 0:37. But these probably are things only a southpaw like me would notice; the overall effect of switching hands for drinking coffee, thumbing through papers, etc is a good one.

At 4:19 when he first starts to sign the receipt left handed, there is nothing under his pen. Maybe the receipt book was not supposed to be in the shot. In the next shot, at 4:29, there is now a receipt book present. (and he's "singing" it in a different location on the file folder)
Also, he quoted ambidextrous as being 10% of the population, but that figure is for left handed. Ambidextrous would be at about 1%.
Also, he didn't have a receipt book with him, so picked one up off the desk, but after signing, Columbo takes the entire book, not just the signed top page. (and I didn't see the receipt book on the desktop before he reached for it)
Also, when the teacup is put down, the handle is pointing towards the cigarette lighter on the desk, but in the next shot where the cup is visible, the handle is pointing to the file folder.

Robert Culp begins to sign the made up receipt on the folder containing the files , (although he's not really writing anything on it) . Cut to Falk "Isn't that weird". Go back to Culp and he's no longer signing the folder but a smaller blue pad magically appears.

A slight blooper by the great Robert Culp. At about 0:30 he says an unnecessary "thank you". Columbo said thank you which probably made him think it was his line. He's forgiven because he was always the best dressed actor.
