For those of you who have asked the question as to the background of this song ; it is the musical adaptation of the poem, 'I'll Rise' by Maya Angelou originally recorded by Ben Harper off of his 1994 album, "Cruel World." While Mr, Harpers idea to put this iconic poem to music was nothing short of genius and he does a fine job with it; it is nothing even close to what we just heard Mr Peyton deliver. Harpers version lacks the raw emotion and gritty soulfulness that comes through so powerfully in Mr. Peyton's rendition. Just my opinion. It's a shame Mrs Angelou passed away a few years ago and never got to hear this version.
