Friction Stir Welding (FSW)

An educational video for friction stir welding process,invented by TWI in 1991. Heat produced from frictional force between FSW tool and workpieces melt the joint of the plate. FSW is a solid-state welding which operate below material's melting point.

I've also seen a FS Welding video where the 2 pieces were butted together; with the Welding Head moving up to the butted edge, then welding it way through !

Just curious, is this a special machine? Can you use a regular CNC mill just to "play/experiment" with aluminum? Looks interesting. Thanks
