- Thiruvananthapuram: The capital city is reeling under waterlogging as incessant rainfall battered the Thiruvananthapuram district of Kerala from May 18. Houses were inundated in low-lying areas of the district. Many parts of the district are facing a flood-like situation as canals started to overflow. The India Meteorological Department has sounded an orange alert in the district for the next two days as rainfall ranging from 6m to 20m is expected in 24 hours.

Like Mumbai, Thiruanantapuram is a coastal city. This situation is unavoidable when heavy rains and high tide come together
The problem is with blocked drainage system. The Corporation and Government have been sitting on this problem for years. Many parts of Trivandrum city are on a higher elevation than Mumbai, so it's not the same problem. It's the low lying areas that suffer the most.

Heavy rain and high tide happening in Singapore, bankok, kualalumpur, Tokyo like many of the far eastern cities. Why not effecting floods like Thiruvantapuram? Very simple lack of proper drainage system and poor planning.

@@Knowledge_Wave813 Ofc proper drainage system is imp and govt must look into it. I helps to reduce the impact of flooding but when if it the huge amt of rain water comes down in a short interval of time the drainage system will also struggle to a good extend. Even countries with top notch drainage system like Japan had issues when this has happened. I have lived in tvpm and let me tell you most people there put tiling or cement preventing water to be absorbed to ground . It's not just one cause there r multiple contributing factors
